Dave Webb

Dave Webb is a legend in West London football. He played for both Chelsea and QPR with great success and went on to manage Chelsea and Brentford later in his career.

Webb signed from Chelsea in 1974. David Webb headed the winning goal for Chelsea against Leeds United in the 1970 FA Cup replay at Old Trafford.

He made his Rangers debut against Sheffield United and soon became an integral part of a strong Rangers defence.

Alongside Clement, Gillard and McLintock, Webb helped form the backbone of the 1975/76 team which finished 2nd in the first division coming just a point away from being champions of England.

Webb also scored his fair share of goals for a defender and some of Webb's more important goals came in the title run in at the end of the 75/76 season when Webb was a vital member of the team.

He was also superb the following season in Rangers UEFA cup run which almost brought a European trophy to Loftus Road

Webb scored one of three goals in the UEFA cup against FC Koln where Rangers were big under dogs but Webb and the rest of the QPR team raised their game and won the first leg comfortably. The second leg was not quite as easy though as Don Masson's away goal saw QPR go through despite losing 4-1.

In the quarter finals Dave Webb played a massive part in the second leg but for all the wrong reasons. In a tight game Rangers drew 3-3 on aggregate and the game went to penalties. Webb missed his penalty and Rangers went out enduing the European dream.

QPR also got to the semi final of the league cup that season but Dave Webb couldn't stop Brian Little scoring as we went out in a replay. Like most other players, Webb left Rangers after the European adventure as the team broke up and were eventually relegated.

Webb went on to management where he did an excellent job at Southend before getting the Chelsea job, which didn't go, as well as he had hoped.

He had another taste of management at Brentford before being sacked to make way for Ron Noades.

Dave Webb made 146 league and cup appearances between 1974 and 1978 and scored eleven goals for QPR and was a key member of our best ever team. Dave Webb will always be remembered fondly for his time at QPR where his never say die attitude and hard work helped make him a QPR legend.
