A bright sunny day in Shepherds bush and for the first time since
the final days of Sir Les at Shepherds Bush, Rangers had nothing
to play for in the final home game of the season.
This match
was an important one with West Brom needing a win to guarantee
safety. Over 3,500 travelled down many in suits after West Brom
were voted the least fashionable supporters in England. On my
way to the ground several of them seemed to be regretting that
idea as some very red and sweating faces walked along South Africa
Road moaning "Its bloody hot, whose idea was this" well something
like that anyway.
Inside the
ground it seemed a disappointing turnout but the ground soon filled
up and the best atmosphere since the Fulham game was evident with
the Q, P and R blocks singing non stop for 90 minutes. Sadly the
game matched the Fulham one and was not the entertainment feats
we had hoped for.
Surprisingly
Rangers made just one change with Lee Harper back in goal in pace
of Miklosko. Kevin Gallen remained on the bench with Koejoe up
front. West Brom started as you would expect with lots of passion
and hard work but they lacked the ability and skill to break Rangers
down.
Rangers never
looked in any real danger early on and played some nice football
with Richard Langley involved in our best moments. "Going down
in your cheap suits" was the chant from the P block and it did
look that way as West Brom created very little and James Quinn
spent more time arguing with officials than running at the Rangers
back 5.
The one time
he did run at us he almost scored, leaving Bruce trailing but
his shot was easily dealt with. Rangers had the best chances,
a good move down the left saw Bruce put in an excellent cross
and Gavin Peacocks diving header hit the outside of the post and
flew wide. Rangers were having some joy in a good spell, an outrageous
flick from Koejoe sent Langley through but his shot went wide.
Langley then
showed all of his ability with a stepover which left Sneekes standing
and Langley ran forward with confidence and hit a 25 yard shot
but it was straight at the keeper. Wardley had is usual shot but
missed and Kiwomya was causing problems with his running as usual.
You did feel for the West Brom supporters who were singing their
hearts out and it was only 12 months ago when we were in exactly
the same position. West Brom saved us that day but we didn't look
likely to repay the favour.
So at half
time it was goalless and the news that Walsall were 1-0 up seemed
to shock the away end into near silence. The second half saw West
Brom come flying out and attack Rangers with a series of long
throws and corners but still Lee Harper had very little to do.
What exactly happened in this period I am not totally sure due
to a cock up in the P Block. A few people seemed to be in the
wrong seats so we were all left standing around waiting for a
steward to sort it out which he did do eventually.
The atmosphere
was still good and we had our best spell of the game. A couple
of corners seemed to cause panic in their defence and one of their
defenders (Carbon I think) almost put through his own net with
a header. Rangers should have taken advantage as keeper Brian
Jensen was all over the place, he panicked again at a ball forward
and Wardley was faced with an open goal. His weak header fell
was partly blocked and fell to Sammy Koejoe who sliced his shot
wide when he should have buried it into an open net. To be fair
to Sammy, I was told after the game that Kiwomya was in his way
but the view from upstairs is not always the best.
Then came
the only goal of the game, which was quickly ruled out. Ready
seemed to be pulled down in the box by a defender but the ref
waved play on and Koejoe fired home. I have no idea what was given
but West Brom had a free kick. My view was it was either a penalty
or a goal but not many players complained so it must have been
a fair decision.
Gary Megson
seems to have a cheek moaning about a penalty that they should
have had. Two blatant handballs should have resulted in at least
our third penalty of the game but at least the ref was consistent
in being poor for both sides. Changes were made with Gallen coming
on for Koejoe for perhaps his last game for Rangers at Loftus
Road. Gallen did well again but did not have enough time to make
a lasting impression. So with time running out a draw looked a
certainty but West Brom pilled forward with a few set pieces.
Bob Taylor
was clearly brought down for a penalty but the ref obviously had
a no score draw on his coupon. Taylor should have won the game
when Lee Harper kicked straight against him but the ball ran straight
back to Harper and Rangers got very lucky. Wardley almost won
it with a great dummy but his shot summed up his performance and
was below par.
As for West
Brom, well they gave everything they had but looked a very poor
side. They created little and will need a huge performance next
week to stay up. I actually hope they do stay up, nothing against
Walsall or Crewe but a side with such fantastic support deserves
better than they are getting.
So full time
and a pitch invasion despite the pleas to stay off the pitch.
I did as I was told and stayed in my seat (well it's a bit of
a walk to go down to the upper loft to be pushed by a steward)
The stewards once again over reacted in pushing fans back and
one bloke fell arse over head and tried to style it out by picking
up his son. Nice try mate. Then a few idiots followed by several
more ran over to the West Brom end to give them some stick. As
I said only 12 months ago that was us, so laughing at them shows
how short some peoples memories are.
The Horses
were soon on the pitch and the supporters were back in the stand.
The players then came out for a lap of honour. This was a big
moment for me. I remember Les's last game when he waved goodbye,
I was looking to see if anyone did this who is out of contract.
Well Bye Bye Gallen after his reaction. He waved goodbye to the
loft and gave his boots and shin pads away. Then as he turned
away from the loft he walked in a pile of Horse shit. Poor man,
he can't even say goodbye without being poked fun at.
So the end
of another season at Loftus Road, a good one as far as I am concerned
and with Rose, Maddix, Steiner, Breacker, Morrow, Heinola and
Darlington all to come back. The future looks brighter than it
did 12 months ago.
