Rangers started
with Matthew Rose returning for Darren Ward in defence and the
rest of the team was unchanged. Rangers took a strong army of
around 1,700 fans who packed into the away end.
Back home,
where I was, the usual soccer Saturday afternoon was well under
way. Sadly no Rodney marsh this week and memories of student afternoons
watching the scores come in came flooding back. This was to be
a bit different though as me and my dad can't stand listening
to Alan Mullery we opted to watch the Rugby and rely on teletext.
Well 40 minutes
into that farce and with England thrashing Italy we went back
to Sky and the great Jeff Stelling. To the Bescot Stadium he said
after just eleven minutes. The look of panic hovers over the front
room but there it is on the screen Rangers are 1-0 up. A run down
the right from Chris Kiwomya saw the forward produce a low cross
for Paul Murray. Before Murray could get a touch Walsall defender
Larusson converted into his own net.
Great stuff,
my sister seems happy as she now reckons that if QPR go up she
is gonna go every week so that's one more through the turnstile
next year. That extra fan came close with the voice of Jeff Stelling
telling us "Speaking of struggling sides, it's gone from bad to
worse for.....(Note the pause to keep every struggling sides supporters
and their opponents clinging to his every word) Walsall." Yes
we cry but pause for a second, as he could be about to tell us
Swindon are winning. This is a neat trick that Stelling plays
on us never letting us know the score until we can stand it no
longer.
Over to the
Becot and yes it is 2-0 and its Wardley again. The goal itself
was from an Ian Baraclough free kick, which was half, cleared
to Wardley who volleyed home. "We are going up" I scream and as
I say I fear a comeback on the way.
A quick check
of the Rugby and England are even further in front so it's with
Jeff and the boys all the way as the main focus is back on the
teams around us. Then the phone goes and future brother in law
is informed that his beloved Glasgow Rangers are getting stuffed,
well 1-0 anyway. He then tells me that QPR will lose 3-2 and Glasgow
Rangers will win 5-2. I laugh at him but by the time I put the
phone down, Glasgow are 3-1 up and QPR are hanging on.
Walsall hit
the bar and then pull one back with a tap in from Tony Barras.
Fear hits in and I scream for half time, thankfully we go in at
2-1 up but knowing Rangers we are bound to lose now. So what to
do for the second half, what will make us win. Well I decided
to just go on the computer and play Champ Man for the second half
whilst watching Soccer Saturday of course.
Back at the
bescot Stadium, Chris Plummer is taken off injured and Mark Perry
comes on to play right wing back with Baraclough switched to the
middle and Darlington onto the left. Then the inevitable. Paul
Hall scores for Walsall and Jeff doesn't rule out a winner. I've
now lost hope and am looking to kill the stupid Jock for predicting
this, especially as Glasgow Rangers go 5-2 up and the playoff
dream comes to an end.
But wait,
Jeff saying Goal at the Bescot. Is it Rangers, come on man spit
it out, he utters those words, "Goals at the bescot and its Chris
Kiwomya" and lets go over to Fulham to speak to Kiwomya. I look
on bemused, as does poor Chris Kamara who explains who he is and
that Fulham have scored again. Jeff is back and tells us that
Kamara has scored for QPR is a half joke and half the fact he
is seeing goal after goal come through on the vidi printer and
he is trying to catch up. The report describes the goal as a quality
finish and it was a good finish by Kiwomya. Wardley again did
well and crossed for Kama.. I mean Kiwomya and he controlled the
ball and struck into the top corner.
The next twenty
minutes were spent starring at the screen as the final score took
ages to come through but at the end of the day, QPR had three
more points. Also, I could now relax in the knowledge that the
Jock was wrong as Glasgow won 6-2 but his prediction was frighteningly
to close for comfort.
Back to the
football side of things and those at the game will tell you how
everyone played. Early reports suggest that we missed Darren Ward
in defence but at the end of the day we are 3 points closer to
promotion.
