Rangers went into this end of season game making just one change
as Gerry Francis was away scouting for new players.
Ludek Miklosko
made his first appearance for Rangers since Boxing Day in place
of Lee Harper. Neither side had anything to play for but Rangers
started brightly.
Sammy Koejoe
thought he had scored his second goal in three days but saw it
ruled out for offside. Chris Kiwomya forced himself into a shooting
position and unselfishly passed to Koejoe who was ruled offside.
Rangers took
the lead soon after when Tranmere's Gareth Roberts handled in
the area for a penalty. Gavin Peacock stepped up and scored to
take him into double figures for the season, a good achievement
considering he was out injured for three months.
Rangers could
have added more before half time. Stuart Wardley lost his marker
and got on the end of a long, raking cross but his volley flew
just over. Towards the end of the half Wardley was involved again,
his shot well saved by John Achterberg.
Tranmere came
out for the second half with a little more fight and Andy Parkinson
almost levelled the scores on 50 minutes. Tranmere got level though
minutes later when Richard Langley failed to clear his lines before
knocking a ball across his own area straight to Alan Mahon who
struck home a fierce drive from the edge of the box. Langleys
over confidence costing Rangers dearly.
Rangers gave
Kevin Gallen and Paul Murray another chance in the closing stages
but both players are probably on their way out of the club this
summer. The rest of the second half saw both asides have chances
to win the game. Langley almost made amends for his mistake but
a point was a fair result.
