Rangers were
forced into making some changes to the side that lost at Huddersfield
last week. Rose, Gallen and Kulscar all missed out with Langley,
Kiwomya and Paul Bruce playing, Bruce making his first appearance
this season as left wing back.
Tim Breacker
played in the centre of defence in a re-shuffled team Rangers
began brightly and could have gone ahead after a cross from Darlington
found Wardley but his shot was turned wide for a corner. Wardley
headed the corner well wide of the goal.
Torquay came
to play rather than kick and rush and battled for every ball making
Rangers work hard for everything. They should have taken an early
lead when a corner from the left was headed in by Wayne Thomas
only to see it ruled out for pushing when everyone in the stands
saw nothing wrong with the goal.
Rangers made
them pay and broke quickly down the right with Rob Steiner. Steiner
beat his man and crossed low for Wardley to fire into an empty
net for his eight goal of the season. The pig bag song roared
out over the tannoy and it should have been the first of many.
But like so
many times this season, Rangers sat back thinking the game was
over. Torquay chased and worked hard and had a few half chances.
A few headers flashed wide and a few shots went wide or over but
Harper was not made to work hard enough from a Torquay point of
view. Harper seemed to pull up with a hamstring injury after a
kick out under pressure from Donaldson.
Rangers should
have added to their goal several times before the break. Stuart
Wardley again found himself in space but shot wide whilst Chris
Kiwomya did his best to earn a replay by missing a sitter after
a great cross from Paul Bruce. Kiwomya was ten yards out with
an open goal but fired high and wide.
Paul Murray
should have made it two when played through by Steiner. He found
himself one on one with Southall but hit straight at the big Welshman
to earn a corner. From the corner he hit a great volley which
went just wide. Baraclough almost scored from a Darlington cross
but Southall tipped over. As half time approached another goal
should have followed after good work by Steiner was Kiwomya clean
through again but he tamely shot wide again.
At Half time
Lee Harper was replaced by Ludek Miklosko and it seemed only a
matter of time before QPR would get the killer second goal. Torquay
were looking dangerous coming forward although again not forcing
the keeper to make a save of any note. Neville Southall pleased
the QPR fans by waving when asked, "What's the score", a great
goalkeeper in his time and nice to se him enjoying his football
at Torquay.
Rangers should
again have finished this game off without playing well. Chris
Kiwomya found himself in space and turned his defender well but
was stopped by a superb tackle for a corner. From the corner Rangers
managed the miss of the season not once but twice. Chris Kiwomya
managed to miss a free header on the goal line heading it upwards
and Rob Steiner from three yards out under no pressure managed
to miss hit and Torquay cleared.
A disgraceful
moment then followed which not many seemed to pick up. Kiwomya
was tussling with Thomas in the box when both men went down. Kiwomya
threw a punch at the defender and caught him square on the chin.
Kiwomya should have been sent off but the ref and linesman turned
a blind eye in another example of poor refereeing. (This bloke
was poor for both teams today).
Rangers continued
to create chances, Langleys shot was pushed wide by Southall and
a number of crosses were cleared under little or no pressure from
the Rangers forwards. As the 70-minute mark hit, QPR decided the
game was won and sat back. Torquay issued a few warning with Mick
O'Brien's long shots. He hit one well over but seemed annoyed
with himself over that. He then hit a great shot but Ludo saved
and the warning was there for all to see.
QPR's midfield
then did an amazing magic trick by disappearing from the field
completely. Torquay began to run at Rangers and caused panic in
out makeshift defence. We gave the ball away time after time and
the pace of Tony Beadeau was causing Breacker problems and his
foul led to a 82nd minute free kick from about 25-30 yards out.
Just before that Sammy Koejoe came on for his home debut and Murray
was seen screaming at him to get in the wall as the players began
to push the panic button. The ref then stopped the game for some
bizarre reason that neither set of supporters could work out.
That man again Mick O'Brein stood over the free kick and curled
a screamer into the bottom corner which only Ludo Miklosko couldn't
see coming.
That goal
should have brought QPR to life but a few corners and a miss hit
Wardley shot was all we could muster. In fact it was Torquay who
looked more like winning the game with one of the forwards (donaldson
I think) totally missing the ball when in loads of space in the
area.
They got a
number of free kicks all for petty offences but couldn't produce
enough quality to trouble us. Rob Steiner did his dying swan act
in injury time. He did a brilliant turn and found himself through
but decided to throw himself on the floor rather than go for goal.
He should have been booked for this blatant cheating which is
beginning to annoy me week in week out.
Five minutes
of injury time were added but a draw was a superb result for Torquay
and one their hard work and chasing of last causes deserved. Rangers
were booed off much to the dismay of Rob Steiner but the lack
of urgency and the fact that Rangers were so complacent looks
to have ended the FA Cup dream for another year.
Man of
the Match: Rob Steiner
13. Lee Harper
: Had little to do really apart from some kicks. 7/10
22. Jermaine
Darlington : didn't get forward enough, he had the beating of
their full back every time but seemed reluctant to attack in the
second half. 6/10
3 Ian Baraclough:
did nothing wrong, led the team well and will be missed next week.
7/10
17. Chris
Plummer : Made one or two errors under pressure and gave the ball
away too much but he has played worse. 6/10
2. Tim Breacker
: Played out of position and his lack of pace saw him struggle
at times but did an OK job. 6/10
27. Stuart
Wardley : Worked hard and scored again. He gave the ball away
too much again but it's difficult to be too hard on him as his
goal threat is sensational. 6/10
30. Paul Bruce
: A poor player in my book, played some nice crosses in but how
he played ahead of Jeanne and Scully is anyone's guess. 5/10
7. Paul Murray
: A fair first half but faded badly and needs to impose himself
more in games like this 6/10
21. Richard
Langley : Can't defend him today, some nice touches but he is
not the player of last season and was very poor today 6/10
9. Rob Steiner
: Led the line well and was our only real threat but still should
have scored. 7/10
11. Chris
Kiwomya : A bad day at the office for CK. We are used to him missing
chances but today was unbelievable. He will never miss so many
easy chances in a game again, well I hope he doesn't anyway. 6/10
Subs
31. Samuel
Koejoe : Not very impressive, didn't have much time though. 6/10
1. Ludek Miklosko
: Very slow to react for the goal but didn't have much else to
do. 6/10
