faced more selection problems today but managed to produce another
three points. Tim Breacker and Jermaine Darlington failed fitness
tests to give Brian McGovern his full debut at right wing back
and Paul Bruce returned on the left.
Kevin Gallen
replaced the suspended Chris Kiwomya. The kick off was delayed
due to crowd congestion. Ranger's fans were asked to queue at
the Town end for tickets and then queue again at the away end
leaving many supporters missing the kick off as Swindon underestimated
the size of the QPR support. The seats in the corner were full
whilst behind the goal it looked over three-quarters full.
Despite the
big numbers, the support was quiet throughout until the final
seconds. Rangers started well, attacking Swindon with the wet
conditions causing several slips and passing errors from both
sides. Paul Bruce was whipping in some delightful crosses but
the Rangers attack was unable to get on the end of any of them.
Richard Langley
almost opened the scoring with a strong run through the heart
of the Swindon defence and his effort was pushed wide by the keeper
for a corner. Rangers continued with good pressure with Kevin
Gallen working very hard up front and creating a few openings.
Gallen had two efforts go close. A shot from 25 yards flew just
wide whilst a clever chip was easily dealt with by the keeper.
It wasn't
all Rangers though, Swindon had a few chances with the big number
eight (his name wasn't in the programme) causing problems with
his pace and a few shots flew wide of Harpers goal. The best chance
of the game followed for Swindon as QPR's defence was opened up
easily.
Swindon missed
not one but three clear cut chances in a row as a combination
of Lee Harper and sheer luck kept the scores level. Rangers got
themselves together again but didn't really look like scoring
as half time approached.
Referee Graham
Barber showed why he was demoted from the Premiership with a performance
which was so embarrassing it just wasn't funny. He missed blatant
handballs and fouls and gave some amazing decisions. So at Half
time QPR were level but in need of some inspiration and urgency
up front.
Second half
started very slowly for Rangers with Swindon having more of the
ball but all they produced was a few long-range efforts. Rangers
midfield began to get more in the game with Kevin Gallen working
back and winning the ball and starting off some good moves. Rangers
produced a few chances to take the lead. A free kick was floated
into the box and after a scramble a shot was rattled against the
crossbar from McGovern (I think, could have been Murray).
Steiner then
had a glorious chance to win it for Rangers when he worked an
opportunity and shot against the keeper, the rebound fell straight
onto his head but he put his header wide and Wardley couldn't
convert the rebound. It looked like one of those days for Rangers
as Swindon looked a very poor side but were creating a few half
chances on the break although the defence and Darran Ward in particular
were playing well. Rangers continued too look dangerous.
Wardley lobbed
over when he should have blasted his shot, Gallen then threw himself
at a McGovern cross and just missed a diving header before a turn
and shoot by Gallen was saved and rolled onto the post as the
luck appeared to be against QPR. Wardley and Murray also went
close as time began to run out for QPR. Steiner began to look
almost invisible up front with Gallen doing all of his running
and Langley was working hard in midfield.
Murray was
also trying hard but his passing was poor and he played the team
into trouble on several occasions. As the game drew to an end
several supporters (including my dad) left the stadium as a draw
looked odds on. Rangers had other ideas as Gallen broke through
and his shot was well saved again by Frank Talia.
Another thrown
on for Rangers and yet again Brian McGovern was faced with players
over 20 yards away from him. The movement from throw ins was awful
today and this was no exception. The throw reached Ward who was
beaten to the ball but McGovern fired in a low and very hard cross.
It flew across a group of players and Richard Langley stuck out
a boot and saw his effort fly into the bottom corner. Wild celebrations
followed with the players and supporters going crazy. The whistle
was blown seconds later as three points were won by a hard working
QPR team. The players and supporters joined to celebrate at the
end as around 3,000 QPR fans went home very happy with the result.
