An
encouraging performance by Rangers but they couldn't turn chances
into goals. Rangers made just one change to the team that beat
West Brom. Gavin Peacock missed out through injury and Matthew
Rose came back into the side as a holding player in midfield.
The first
half was a very dull affair. Rangers played some nice football
at times with Jermaine Darlington impressing on the left. Rob
Steiner had a good early chance when through one on one with the
keeper but he shot wide. Rangers created a few half chances but
nothing to clear cut.
Portsmouth
enjoyed a lot of possession but could not break through the QPR
defence and a long range shot, from Bradbury I think, was all
they could muster. Confusion between Harper and Maddix could have
resulted in disaster but Rangers cleared the danger.
During half
time the main thoughts seemed to be this had 0-0 written all over
it but the rain made us believe someone would nick it with a comedy
goal. The second half began with a downpour of rain which forced
many players into mistakes.
Rangers began
to get on top playing some nice football and using the wing backs
well. Darlington was using some wonderful skill and determination
to beat his man and get crosses in. Rob Steiner should have done
better with a free header which he put wide after a good move.
Rangers began to dominate and a series of crosses saw Steiner
hit the post and see another header go wide.
Steiner was
then put thought and his delicate volley this time hit the underside
of the bar and bounced away. The front two were causing plenty
of problems and a good move between Breacker, Langley and Kiwmoya
cut Portsmouth apart. Kiwomya hit the bar with the resulting shot
but it was ruled offside anyway. Steiner saw another header go
just wide and Richard Langley hit a wonderful shot just over from
30 yards. It seemed only a matter of time but as the game wore
on Portsmouth held on for a point.
Lee Harper
had very little to do second half apart from a few late corners.
One of these should have seen Pompey win when a free header was
placed high and wide on the goal. The game almost had a dramatic
end when Kiwomya was sent through but was brought down just outside
the box. A yellow card was shown when other would have shown a
red. Baraclough's free kick was well bent round the wall but cleared
off the line by a Pompey defender.
The corner
resulted in a long range and powerful Breacker shot hitting Rob
Steiner in the bollocks. He looked in server pain but made a joke
out of it with the fans by looking down his shorts before checking
the floor for his lost tackle. A standing ovation for the team
who played well but couldn't get the win. Rangers can play better
but did enough to win the game.
Man of
the Match: Jermaine Darlington
Player
by Player
13. Lee Harper:
Didn't have much to do, claimed a few crosses well and is fast
becoming the number one keeper at QPR. 8/10
2. Tim Breacker
: Much better from Tim. Got forward well and supplied some good
crosses. 7/10
22. Jermaine
Darlington : Superb. Very much like Clive Wilson. He seemed to
have the ball stuck to his foot at times in the 2nd half. Some
of his drag backs were top class. 9/10
5.Karl Ready
: Solid again from Karl, gave the ball away a little too often
but still a huge improvement of last season 7/10
6. Danny Maddix
: Good game from Danny, Usual solid performance. 7/10
3. Ian Baraclough
: Looks better as sweeper. Played the long ball a few times to
often but was unlucky with his free kick 7/10
27. Stuart
Wardley : Worked hard but had an average game. I would have taken
him off as he appeared tired in the last ten minutes. 6/10
12. Matt Rose
: Looks better in defence but that's nothing against his performance
today. He won tackles all game, all over the pitch. 7/10
21. Richard
Langley : A little too relaxed today, gave the ball away when
under no pressure but still showed some nice touches. 6/10
9. Rob Steiner
: Had a poor first half but improved and could and should have
had a hat trick. 7/10
11. Chris
Kiwomya : Same as Steiner. Second half he was a constant threat
and was unlucky not to score. 7/10
