This
report was written by Jonno from the Unofficial Message Board.
An
above average performance by Rangers as we deservedly took all three
points. The team was Harper, Perry and Bruce Wbs, Bara, Ready and
Plummer cbs, Langley, Peacock and Wardley mfld, koejoe, Kiwomya
stikers.
Right from the
start Rangers looked the classier outfit, particularly when we played
the ball on the ground, which for once we did a lot of the time.
Pompey struggled to break down our defence and were reduced to long
range shooting, none of it at all accurate. Langley was getting
a lot of the ball, and he stood out head and shoulders in the midfield
as a notch above the other midfield players on view.
Although we
weren't creating as many clear cut chances as our superior ability
should have done, it was no real surprise when we went ahead with
a cracker of a goal from Langley. Ready played the ball along the
ground (shock!) to Langley in midfield, he played a simple 1-2 and
let fly with a screamer from about 25 yards which the keeper could
only touch onto the underside of the bar as it scorched into the
net.
The expected
response from Pompey never came as we defended the remaining quarter
of an hour until half time quite comfortably, and in fact could
have gone further ahead when Wardley got free on the right and his
cross found Koejoe in the box who headed over when he might have
done better.
Second half,
and the referee carried on as he left off in the first half after
we had scored, ie giving every decision to Pompey in an attempt
to get them back in the game.
In
fact there was a ten minute period in the second half in which we
witnessed probably the most concentrated refereeing ineptitude of
the season, where he got two decisons over a throw in wrong in the
space of five seconds, then totally failed to deal with the donkey
Bradbury who accused Peacock of diving after he had run into the
back of Peacock who, naturally, had fallen down.
This then provoked
a fight after which, for some strange reason, only Langley was booked
(the guilty donkey wasn't even spoken to). From the ensuing piece
of play, Bradbury exacted revenge on Peacock, in their penalty area
I may add, by punching him in the ribs. The referee must have seen
it, but chose to ignore it of course, and Gavin needed treatment.
Quite apalling refereeing.
Bradbury was
booked for a lucicrously late challenge later on Murray later on,
but by then he should not have been on the pitch.Anyway, Perry was
replaced early in the second half by Murray, presumably with yet
another injury, although hopefully it didn't seem too serious. The
substitution unsettled us for a few minutes though, and during this
time Portsmouth equalised as we went to sleep at the back and a
cross from the left was swept in by Allen as he escaped his marker.
The game deteriorated
after that, as we appeared to settle for a draw, more or less, and
they were just incapable of scoring again, despite forcing a succession
of corners. The turning point in the game came with a few minutes
to go when Gallen came on for the ineffective Kiwomya (Kulscar also
came on for Bruce at the same time).
You won't be
surprised to learn that we immediately looked more effective up
front, and within a couple of minutes Gallen had put us ahead as
he picked up the ball, ran at and across their static defence left
to right and swivelled to shoot past the keeper from 20 yards.
Virtually from
the kick off, Rangers won possession again, played the ball around
until Koejoe made a run down the left onto a good ball through,
beat two defenders in the box and cut the ball back from the deadball
line across the goal where one of their many clumsy defenders bundled
the ball home for us. We then took the piss for the remaining couple
of minutes as Pompey couldn't get the ball off us.Sweet.
One word for
the Pompey fans - the opposing fans might be able to make a bit
more noise, and thus add to the atmosphere in the ground, if your
club forked out for a bloody roof over the away end! Cheapskates.
Harper - Confident
performance generally, dealt well with crosses, but nearly gave
away a goal with a dawdled clearance in the second half.
Perry - Usual
solid performance, although wing back is not really his position.Replaced
by Murray.
Bruce - Actually
dealt very well today with Hall, dispossessing him often, much to
the chagrin of the Pompey faithful.
Baraclough -
Solid performance at sweeper.
Plummer - Excellent
today, won everything in the air and starting to show the confidence
to play the ball on the ground.
Ready - Pompey's
long ball game played right into his hands and he didn't let us
down.Encouraging to see him playing the ball on the deck as well.
Wardley - Got
into an amazing amount of space down the right in the first half,
but faded a little after half time. Not a bad show though.
Peacock - Worked
bloody hard the whole game, and did a lot of chasing down.
Langley - Easily
the class player on show (although Gallen looked good when he came
on also).Made mugs of their midfield players most of the time, and
put in some excellent tackles.Soooopairb goal (as Mr Brazil would
say if he wasn't outrageously biaised against us!
) Kiwomya -
Disappointing performance today from Chris he seemd to be often
on a different wavelength to Koejoe up front.Worked hard though,
and was still a problem for their defence.
Koejoe - Another
good performance from the Dutch boy. Won more than he had a right
to in the air, and looked sharp.Very, very promising.
Subs:
Gallen - Looked
a class player when he came on - him and Koejoe together destroyed
their defence in the last few minutes. Kulcsar - Not sure if he
touched the ball.
