Gerry Francis
surprised many today by changing to a 4-4-2 system which has been
asked for by many fans on the Internet. Matthew Rose returned to
partner Darren Ward with McGovern and Baraclough as full backs.
Gavin Peacock came in for Paul Murray on the left whilst Tony Scully
replaced Bruce and Steve Slade made his first start since last May.
All these changes
seem to have made an impact as Rangers started like a house on fire.
Attacking the loft, Rangers won a few corners where Kiwomya and
Wardley both went close. Rangers needed a good first half with a
strong wind in their favour but began to lose out looking uneasy
in defence as the players seemed to struggle with the four at the
back.
This new system
caused all sorts of trouble with no left winger and Forest began
to realise this quickly and created lots of space down the right
side whilst Nigel Quashie was getting to much time and space in
midfield. After just 8 minutes a slip by Matthew Rose sent Freedman
racing towards goal, but his right-footed shot was excellently pushed
away.
Forest were
on top and took the lead after twelve minutes when Lee Harper came
to collect Bart-Williams' free-kick but was beaten by Quashie's
backward header. Quashie seemed to enjoy the goal on his first visit
back to Loftus Road since his transfer in 1998.
Two minutes
later Quashie's defence-splitting pass gave his ex-QPR youth team-mate
Dougie Freedman a great chance to follow him in scoring against
his old club, but the Forest striker's tame effort was easily collected
by Harper. Harper continued his good form and kept Rangers in the
game with a great save from Rogers.
Rangers did
create some chances as Forests defence looked very shaky at times.
Gavin Peacock fired wide and then threaded a ball through to Wardley
whose run was intercepted well by Mark Crossley.
Forest finished
the half stronger than Rangers and Chris Bart Williams should have
made the game safe. Bart-Williams produced a sharp turn on the by-line
to beat Wardley and brilliantly took the ball past Harper only to
step on the ball on the edge of the six-yard box with the goal at
his mercy.
The second half
saw Rangers start where they left of with Nigel Quasie dominating
midfield. Lee Harper again produced a good save, this time from
Andy Gray pushing his shot past the post. Richard Langley had been
Rangers most creative player again and saw the danger of Quashie.
Langley spent the rest of his time on the pitch closing down the
former Rangers man as Rangers looked very disorganised al over the
field.
Brian McGovern
then appeared to pull a hamstring and was replaced by Karl Ready
who appeared to install some organisation into the defence. Still
QPR struggled to get any sort of move going as Forest looked to
be heading to a comfortable win. Francis then gambled and replaced
the completely ineffective Tony Scully and the unlucky Richard Langley
with Koejoe and Paul Bruce. L
ittle changed
as Rangers produced very little in the way of chances before Karl
Ready's flick found Chris Kiwomya and he managed to steer the ball
past Crossley for the equaliser. Rangers then stepped up the pace
and could have won the game. Paul Bruce produced two good crosses,
the second was flapped at by Crossley but the ball appeared to just
hit Slade and roll straight back to Crossley.
Rangers ended
up with one point, which was just about deserved and should hopefully
end all talk of playing a 4-4-2 system, which as showed today, really
doesn't suit our players.
Man Of The
Match: Lee Harper
13.Lee Harper
: Kept us in the game with some good saves, could have done better
with the goal but claimed his crosses well in a strong wind. 7/10
35. Brian McGovern
: Went off injured, he did ok at right back but did look a little
shaky at times. 6/10
3 Ian Baraclough:
Another poor dislpay, looks better in the middle of defence and
his lack of pace caught him out a few times. 6/10
32. Darren Ward
: Probably his worst game but stil did OK. Strugged at times with
the wind but recovered well from every mistake. 6/10
12. Matt Rose
: Started badly and looked all over the place, did better second
half and good to see him back. 6/10
27. Stuart Wardley
: Not a good performace, I would have taken him off rather than
Langley, possibly needs to be dropped for a few games to take the
pressure off him. 5/10
21. Richard
Langley : Again played well but was slagged off by several tossers,
i expect he'll recieve the same treatment as Quashie in a few years
which is very sad. 7/10
8. Gavin Peacock
: Unlucky with a volley in the first half but didn't play as wel
as he can. 6/10
20. Tony Scully
: A waste of space. 4/10
18. Steve Slade
: worked hard but had no service at all so hard to judge him. 6/10
11. Chris Kiwomya
: Same as Slade, had very few chances created for him, worked hard
and got a nice goal. 6/10
Subs
5. Karl Ready
: Did Ok when he came on but stil managed to give away a needless
free kick. 6/10
31. Sammy Koejoe
: Not really involved on the right wing. 6/10
30. Paul Bruce
: Two excellent crosses when he came on. 6/10
