Rangers gave
a full home debut to Sammy Koejoe as Gerry Francis looked to complete
the double over Ipswich at Loftus Road.
The first half
was a surprising quiet encounter. Rangers started quite well and
almost went ahead through Ipswich old boy Chris Kiwomya. Kiwomya
once again received stick throughout the game from the away end
but just as he did at Portman Road last April and October, he was
causing problems and well up for the game.
Mark Perry opened
up the Ipswich defence with a clever pass and Kiwomya's shot was
well saved by Richard Wright. Ipswich needed a win to keep alive
their promotion hopes but they never stepped up a gear during the
first half despite enjoying plenty of possession.
They did have
a few chances to take the lead. Firstly Baraclough did well to head
away Scowcrofts overhead kick and then Bara produced a fine tackle
after poor defending by Plummer had seen Johnson run clear.
David Johnson
had several chances to give Ipswich the lead but his finishing was
woeful and he seemed to be a striker short of confidence. Rangers
were coping well with Ipswich and Richard Langley was standing out
in midfield showing some excellent skills and vision and his almost
gave Rangers the lead with a good run and shot but Wright dealt
with the danger comfortably. So half time saw both fans satisfied
with the match nicely balanced.
My feeling was
that Ipswich were wasting a golden opportunity. If I were an Ipswich
fan I would be looking to QPR for an easy 3 points especially at
this stage of the season with nothing to play for. They seemed a
little too patient though and the longer the game went you felt
Rangers might nick something here.
Rather than
nick something Rangers came out a different side and went ahead
straight from kick off. Richard Langley did well to run though the
Ipswich defence and his shot was blocked by Wright but Gavin Peacock
headed over the keeper to set off wild celebrations in the Loft.
Peacock ran straight towards the Q Block kissing his badge and acknowledging
the superb support from that section again.
Chants of "Your
gonna lose in the playoffs" followed but Ipswich should have levelled
straight away. Johnson turned and left Ready for dead but shot wide
when he should have done better. Veteran defender Tony Mowbray then
headed over from a corner but Rangers were looking dangerous on
the break with the pace of Koejoe and Kiwomya.
These two combined
for number two when Kiwomya put Koejoe in and his used his pace
to run onto the ball and fire and unstoppable shot past Richard
Wright. The Rangers fans were ecstatic and it looked like a case
of how many. Paul Bruce crossed after a good Rangers move and Gavin
Peacocks volley went just wide. Stuart Wardley also found himself
with time and space in the area but he fired high and wide on two
occasions.
The Rangers
fans were in good voice with chants of "6-1 to the Superhoops",
"We'll see you all next year" and plenty of Koejoe songs were flying
around the stadium. It was too good to be true and Rangers invited
Ipswich onto them to set up a frantic finish.
Ipswich finally
looked like a side hungry for goals and Johnson again missed simple
chances. Harper fumbled Reuser's shot and was left grounded by a
kick from Johnson; but Baraclough cleared as Johnson and Holland
attempted to bulldoze the ball over the line. The referee seemed
to completely ignore the rules here and played on despite an injury
and allowed Ipswich to attack from the thrown in instead of giving
us the ball back.
Rangers then
made two changes with Bruce and Koejoe being replaced by Gallen
and Kulscar. Koejoe was given a standing ovation after an impressive
display. Ipswich finally got a goal that they deserved through a
penalty. Langley brought down Magilton and the midfielder got up
and struck his penalty past Harper who almost got a hand to the
ball. Rangers now looked a nervous team and Ipswich through everything
at Rangers as the QPR midfield could not hold onto the ball in midfield.
Johnson again
missed chance after chance blazing high and wide but their best
chance came after the board was held up showing five minutes of
injury time. Matt Holland found space inside the area and dragged
the ball across the face of goal where Reuser just failed to connect.
Rangers broke
again with Gallen doing very well on the left. Wardley laid the
ball off to him and Gallen's cross fell straight to Kiwomya who
took great satisfaction in putting his shot into the bottom corner
of the net. So Rangers fans went home very happy with a top half
finish now almost guaranteed and the expectations for next season
are rising by the week.
