A great day
out for 1500 QPR supporters whose eleven-month wait for an away
win ended in style. Lee Harper passed a late fitness test to start
the game but Matthew Rose was left out due to a virus, Tim Breacker
filled in and the back 5 was reshuffled.
The match began
as expected with Ipswich putting Rangers under early pressure. A
high ball in fell straight to Darlington but he made a vital error
passing along his own goal to Matt Holland who struck home a simple
goal.
The match looked
over, Ipswich threw everything at us and should have gone two up
soon after. Tim Breacker appeared to fall over the ball and David
Johnson scored a killer goal. Ref Paul Danson disallowed the goal
for a foul and a similar incident followed with Darlington which
was again pulled up for a foul.
Rangers battled
back well and almost levelled through Chris Kiwomya. Kiwomya was
put through and England keeper of the future, Richard Wright, pushed
his shot past the post. Rangers began to gain in confidence and
had two goals disallowed. The first was for pushing at a corner
and the second for offside after a brilliant ball from Langley found
the head of Kiwomya. Rangers continued to break well and got a deserved
goal after half an hour.
A good passing
move saw Kiwomya set Peacock through and he flicked it over the
keeper with a nice finish. Rangers looked comfortable and could
have added to that goal when Kiwomya was sent through but he was
forced wide of goal.
As half time
approached, tempers began to rise and Jim Magilton and Richard Langely
were both warned to calm down. This warning didn't work as Magilton
twice kicked out at Peacock who was on the floor. Peacock had a
kick back but luckily missed. Langley and Maddix were involved in
the pushing match, which followed, but defender Thetis ran 30 yards
to shove Langley over. Magilton was shown the red card as half time
came.
The second
half saw Ipswich come at QPR, passing well and playing as we should
have been doing against the ten men. For a few minutes QPR couldn't
get a touch and a series of corners threatened to win the match
for Ipswich. Jamie Scowcroft went on a good run and was hacked down
by Ready for a blatant penalty. It wasn't given and Ipswich began
to lose their heads.
Rangers were
able to get on the ball a bit more and play up the other end for
a while. A wayward pass by Langley fell to Thetis but his backpass
went straight to Wardley. The youngster went round Wright and produced
a nice finish to set up jubilant celebrations in the Cobbold Road
stand.
Rangers then
used the ball well and a wonderful pass by Richard Langley saw Kiwomya
clean through. The former Ipswich man hit straight at Wright but
Steiner was on hand to grab the killer goal. Rangers began to dominate
midfield and passed the ball well playing some nice stuff. Rob Steiner
killed the game with a good run and shot for number four and kissed
his shirt as the QPR fans went wild with delight. Wardley and Steiner
both had chances for number five but that goals never came.
Danny Maddix
went off with an injury in the closing minutes to allow Paul Murray
his first appearance of the season. Kevin Gallen and Keith Rowland
also came on and the celebrations continued after the game all the
way back to London after a great away day.
