Rangers started
with a near full strength team despite the injury problems. Only
Peacock, Maddix, Ready and Rose were missing from a full strength
team. Rangers started slowly in a very dull first half.
Our main threat
was down the left with Jermaine Darlington causing problems and
Richard Langley and Paul Murray were working well in midfield using
skill and determination to create openings. No real clear-cut chances
came apart from a Darlington cross which was headed wide by Wardley.
Crewe played
some nice football in midfield but lacked a cutting edge and rarely
threatened Lee Harpers goal. Jermaine Darlington then appeared to
pull up with a hamstring injury. The wing back played on for a few
minutes but appeared to signal to the bench his time was over. Darlington
was replaced by loan signing Brian Mcgovern.
It was a good
decision by player and manager to replace him, as I am sure he could
have continued but taking him off early means he can rest the injury
and hopefully be back quickly. Mcgovern started much like Darren
Ward against Charlton, he looked very nervous and it took him a
few minutes to adjust to the pace of the game and to fit in around
players he can't have trained with yet.
Baraclough moved
to left wing back where he started the season with Mcgovern in the
back three. Ranger's forwards looked very quiet with some nice passes
to them being wasted by poor movement and Steiner taking one touch
too many. Langley was beginning to receive stick from the Loft despite
running the game for Rangers with some intelligent passes and wonderful
tackling.
Langley almost
scored with a nice volley but his effort went just over the bar.
Langley has a very casual style, which is supposed to be QPR's tradition,
but QPR fans seem happier with a sliding tackle nowadays than a
neat dummy and 40 yard pass.
This was summed
up just before half time. Langley looked a little to causal on the
ball and lost out on the edge of the Crewe area. As the groans filled
Loftus Road, I and a bloke two rows in front of me shouted "Go one
son, Head up", Now obviously he couldn't hear us but Langley won
the ball back with a great tackle, took on the defence with skill
beating his man easily and crossed a lovely ball into the middle
only for the Rangers attack to stand like planks watching him. Langley
was blamed for not finding a QPR shirt when he skill to open up
the defence should have been given a standing ovation.
Half time came
and little to cheer about as you can tell from the report so far.
Second half saw QPR up the temp a little but were struggling to
break down the Crewe defence. Langley was a little quieter second
half but Paul Murray and Wardley got involved more pushing forward
and loan signing Brian Mcgovern was showing us some good skills.
Mcgovern received the ball on the right wing, turned two Crewe defenders
before firing a shot just wide from 25 yards.
Tim Breacker
then appeared to pull a hamstring and was taken straight off to
be replaced by Gallen as Rangers switched to three up front and
a back four. Mcgovern was switched to the right wing back role and
did well almost scoring again with another long range effort which
flashed just wide. Kevin Gallen then crossed for Steiner to head
straight at the keeper and Wardley found himself with a half chance
and struck his shot straight at the keeper when both should have
done better.
Crewe were creating
very little in the way of chances as Rangers were on top. Kiwomya
was then brought down by a crude challenge on the left for a free
kick. Ian Baraclough swung the ball in the middle and Stuart Wardley
rose to head home his 12th goal of the season. The QPR fans went
mad and Super Stuart Wardley was sung with pride and passion in
the Q, P and R blocks of Loftus Road. Rangers needed a second to
be sure but didn't really create enough to get that goal.
Gallen did well
holding onto the ball but almost cost us the game with a wayward
pass to Langley. As usual, Langley was blamed for this, Crewe broke
to cut QPR open with some nice passing. Colin Cramb found himself
clean through for what looked a certain goal but he somehow managed
to slot the ball wide much to the relief of the QPR supporters and
players. This seemed to wake QPR up again, Kiwomya was replaced
by George Kulscar as we switched to a more defensive team and Gallen
was given the task of keeping the ball in the corner which he managed
to do along with Wardley whose confidence appears sky high.
One worrying
moment followed as Steiner gave Gallen a terrible pass but blamed
Kev. Gallen then won the ball and looked for Steiners run. He placed
the ball towards the corner flag but Steiner was having none of
it and turned his back on the game. Perhaps Steiner should have
run for the ball and helped the team rather than be petty with Kevin
Gallen. It's a team game and whatever the players think of each
over, they must work together. Just that one small complaint though
as Steiner has done well this season.
Final whistle
came and Rangers hung on for a deserved win. It wasn't a classic
but much like the home games against Walsall and Tranmere, QPR have
won without playing well and are back in the playoff hunt.
Man of the Match:
