The
report below is written by Dave Thomas.
If you want
a picture to capture the turnaround in our fortunes this season,
then video Rangers' second goal and, if Sky or ITV can spare us
a few extra seconds of their precious tape, freeze-frame the huddled
group of players, Gallen somewhere in the middle, celebrating with
the Rangers fans.
You will see
a group of players who really, really wanted this result - and dug
in to achieve it. You will see the jubilant, hard-core Rangers fans
for whom this third win on the bounce is just reward for their unceasing
loyalty and support away from home.
Another 1200
made the trip this afternoon. It wasn't a pretty win - and it was
anything but comfortable. Rangers spent most of the game defending
deep (and desperately at times) and relying on the counter-attack.
The difference between us and Blackburn, apart from an obvious self-belief,
was that we converted two of our four chances, and they wasted...
well, how many was it in the end? Ten, twenty, thirty...? It seemed
a hell of a lot anyway, especially when we were holding on our one-goal
lead.
Luckily, Blackburn
to a man had put on their Toblerone boots and the ball-boys were
in more danger than Lee Harper throughout. With Breacker out, Darlington
switched to the right, Rose dropped back into central defence, and
Rowland went into midfield. Murray came in for Langley, who was
on the bench.
The whole defence,
despite being under pressure for long periods, performed well, aided
and abetted by some dismal finishing by the home side. Although
never really tested, Harper looked solid throughout. Baraclough
was his usual reliable self at left-back, whilst Darlington improved
for having switched sides. Although a Murray fan, I have to say
he did little today to enhance his own cause - and gave the ball
away increasingly as the game progressed.
Wardley, another
goal to his name, put himself about, but that was about it - and
it was left to Rowland to put a foot on the ball and provide the
right pass when it was most needed. Kiwomya and Steiner, both much
improved over the past three weeks, ploughed lone and mostly ineffective
furrows today. Both earned their corn, but will have better days.
Gallen came
on injury-time, ostensibly to kill a bit of time, and enjoyed an
overdue stroke of good fortune in following up to knock the ball
into an empty net, after Kiwomya had broken clear and seen his shot
cannon off the keeper. It wasn't Filan's day, as he'd got a hand
to Wardley's effort just before half-time, only to see it bounce
into the net. Filan gutted tonight, I would imagine...
The funniest
moment of the afternoon came just before half-time. The sky went
black, the heavens opened and it poured. But no floodlights. Cue
Rangers fans singing: "Shit ground, no lights..." Blackburn were
simply awful. It wasn't a vintage Rangers performance by any stretch
of the imagination. But we were worthy winners all the same, for
defending well and taking our chances, neither of which Blackburn
could do. That's what confidence and self-belief does for you. And
at the moment, we've got rather a lot of those qualities.
Rangers are
back...
