This hasn't been the easiest match report to write since I started
this website. I sat down to write it on Sunday only for a water
pipe to burst in my bathroom and I spent the afternoon emptying
buckets of hot water into the bath to avoid a flood before the plumber
turned up.
Monday was snow day and with the heating
packing up the thought of sitting in a cold room writing a match
report was off putting. The rest of the week has been taken up with
hospital appointments until we finally get to Wednesday night and
finally some free time to update the site. On the downside my boiler
has just packed up again so this will be short.
Anyway enough of my moans back to the
football. Back to back away wins meant confidence was high at QPR
going into Saturday's game with talk of the playoffs rather than
the usual moans and groans about it not being good enough etc.
Sousa kept an unchanged side for this
one with Lee Camp making his first home appearance of the season
and possibly his last if rumours are to be believed. Camp got a
great reception from the QPR fans and looked pleased to have a chance
to play football again.
This was a good test for Rangers against
a side who should get promoted this season and a chance to see how
close we are to having a side who can challenge at the top end of
the division. The answer was pretty close as in a tight game Rangers
more than matched the visitors.
Sousa's five man midfield worked hard as a unit when defending but
when we got possession some of the football was very good to watch.
Liam Miller impressed on the ball looking
for sensible passing but had plenty of purpose about him whilst
Mahon was doing a very good job holding in front of the back four.
Rangers main threat was coming from
out wide mostly through Routledge although Cook looked bright early
on. Chances were few and far between all game as both sides really
cancelled each other out but in the first half Rangers had the better
of it and looked the more likely to break the deadlock.
Leigterwood and Routledge had efforts
wide of the post whilst Lee Cook curled a free kick straight at
the keeper from distance.
Rangers best chance of the half and
the game came when Cook played the ball back to Delaney and he picked
out a lovely cross to the far post where Helguson was waiting unmarked
but he fluffed his header wide when it seemed easier to score. Helguson
had his head in his hands and must wonder how he hadn't added to
his five goals already this season.
Reading looked dangerous around the
box but Gorkss and Stewart were dealing very well with Doyle and
Lita and the only real chance came to Cisse on the edge of the box
and his deflected shot was heading into the bottom corner before
Camp got the slightest of finger tips to it to guide the ball just
wide. An excellent save by Camp but it was the only save he was
called upon before half time.
The second half saw more of the same
really as both sides worked hard with little end product in the
final third. It was an intriguing game to watch and a real tactical
battle. I thought Rangers coped very well with all reading had to
offer and we created some good openings in the second half as Helguson
poked wide from a Cook cross and the Icelandic striker turned and
shot from the edge of the box but it flew just wide.
The Rangers fans seemed frustrated with
Sousa as cries for Blackstock to form a two man attack got louder
but Sousa stuck to his guns opting to keep control of midfield which
was probably the right thing to do.
Reading began to gain control of the
game late on and looked more like scoring as Doyle's header was
cleared off the line. Lee Camp made his one mistake of the game
dropping a long ball into the box at the feet of Hunt but Mahon
as on hand knock it out for a corner.
In the end a 0-0 draw was probably a
fair result and we had plenty to be positive about. Reading are
the county's top scorers but twice this season the QPR defence has
kept a clean sheet against them. The back four were excellent with
Delaney much improved and Gorkss again having a very good game.
Miller looked impressive in midfield whilst Helguson did a very
good job as the lone striker.
Rangers postponed game against Swansea
means we sit three points off the playoffs with a game in hand so
a good position to be in as the run in begins.
