It's been an odd
week to be a QPR fan. Two excellent wins have been over shadowed
by the match day price increases which have shocked and stunned
many and left a feeling very down about life as a QPR supporter
and that feeling is unlikely to go away for some time.
Anyway on with the football and I have to admit I wasn't too confidence
when we arrived at the Ricoh Arena yesterday. The team news was
that Kaspar Gorkss was in for the suspended Matthew Connolly whilst
Parejo and Buzsaky had to make do with a place on the bench.
As ever at the Ricoh arena the stadium was over half full and the
home support seemed pretty down about the team's chances. QPR had
around 2,000 in the away end and we were in pretty good voice to
start with as we defended the goal in front of the away end.
We didn't start too well with Coventry getting in our aces with
an aggressive style. Ledesma was being singled out and subject of
some hard but fair early tackles which the Argentinean wasn't too
pleased about but something he'll have to get used to in the coming
months.
Damien Delaney had our first shot in anger after good work by Cook
set him up but his effort was high over the bar.
Coventry looked
dangerous going forward with a front three that was causing problems
whilst Jay Tabb looked useful out wide. Clinton Morrison was drifting
out to the right and getting at Delaney to put crosses into the
box and McKenzie went close to opening the scoring as the ball was
scrambled away by Kaspar Gorkss.
The home side were
closing us down and right in our faces and certainly looked the
more dangerous winning a corner which Ward headed just wide of the
post. It was a poor sluggish start by Rangers and we paid the price
with more slack defending to concede a penalty.
Eastwood easily
skipped past Mahon and played it into Tabb who beat Leigterwood
but still had plenty to do with Cook and Stewart close by to snuff
out the danger but Leigterwood stuck a leg out and took Tabb out
for what looked a clear penalty to me. The players seemed to argue
the decision but it looked a correct one to me.
Clinton Morrison ran up to get the ball but handed it over to Elliot
Ward instead. The big defender stepped up and smashed it hard and
straight, Cerny guessed right and got a hand to it and just as we
got ready to celebrate a great save the power in the shot saw the
ball spin back over the line. Clinton Morrison celebrated by running
to the QPR fans to give us some stick, I'm so glad we didn't sign
him, perhaps he thought it was the Coventry end but to give him
a hint for next time the Coventry end is the one with all the empty
seats.
Rangers were struggling to get a grip on the game in midfield and
the passing game was shot to pieces with the wide players unable
to get into the game. Blackstock was looking isolated and rarely
touched the ball in the first half an hour as Coventry continued
to create chances with Tabb and McKenzie getting the better of our
full backs but Rangers were thankful that Stewart and Gorkss were
having decent games clearing any crosses away from danger.
Someone then seemed
to flick a switch and Rangers came back into the game. Rowlands
got more into the game and worked two decent openings out wide to
get the ball over which Blackstock was a little unlucky not to get
on the end of. Lee Cook had a decent chance to level the scores
as he latched onto a loose ball but his shot was wild and went out
for a throw in.
In fairness to Cook his head could have
gone down after this but he seemed determined to make up for it
and went on to have a very good second half.
Rangers best chance came right before
half time as Leigterwood played a ball over the top to Ledesma who
was onside as he burst clean through. A goal seemed certain but
his shot was weak and straight at the keeper, I thought he should
have tried to take it round him but seemed caught in two minds.
It was typical of his performance to be honest, after some dazzling
displays in the hoops this season Ledesma was having an off day
and will need to learn from these kinds of games where he won't
see as much of the ball.
At half time then we may have been a
goal behind but I fancied us to come back strong in the second half
and that's exactly what happened with possibly our best half of
football this season.
Rangers got hold of the ball after the
break and passed it to death with movement off the ball and Coventry
were reduced to parking every player in their own half and trying
to hang on.
Blackstock missed a glorious chance
just after the break when Ramage got down the right and whipped
in a dangerous cross and from six yards out Blackstock got his foot
on the ball but under pressure from Elliot lifted it over the bar.
It was a great chance and a player in his form really should have
scored.
The chances kept coming as Rangers dominated
the game and Damion Stewart headed just wide from a Cook corner.
Stewart then blasted over from close range with a chance that we
needed someone else to have to be honest.
Cook was getting more in the game and
dribbling past players to get crosses in. He put in one perfect
cross to the far post but Blackstock was the only man in the box
much to Cook and the fans frustration.
Dowie then made a change with Buzsaky
coming on for Ledesma and slotted in on the right. Personally I'd
have moved him just off the striker and put Rowlands wide but Rowlands
was running the game in midfield so I can understand the manager's
decision.
Buzsaky looked good on the ball but
struggled to hurt Coventry as he was getting the ball in areas where
he was not really a threat.
Dowie made another change with Daniel Parejo replacing the injured
Ramage which saw Leigterwood go to right back. Parejo was involved
straight away wanting the ball and passing with a real style showing
great technique. It was like a keep ball session and Parejo fired
a shot wide from the edge of the box with his first touch of the
ball.
He let himself down from set pieces
though with three free kicks on the left all hitting the first man
with poor deliveries and the frustration was getting to the fans
but the belief was if we could get one we'd get more.
Lee Cook was getting the better of his
full back and shot just wide of the post before another ball in
from Cook was put over by Blackstock.
It was now so one sided it was embarrassing and a brilliant corner
from Parejo beat the first man and missed Stewart's thigh by a whisker
to fall into a grateful keepers hands and rather than get on with
the game he decided to throw himself on the floor to try and get
Stewart sent off. Quite what he was trying to get him sent off for
is anyone's guess but the referee didn't fall for it and really
should have booked the cheating git.
Dowie made a last throw of the dice
bringing on Agyemang for Blackstock to most people's anger as Coventry
had given up on attacking so leaving Mahon on seemed pointless to
me.
Rangers continued to dominate though
but as time went on you could sense we just didn't have a goal in
us and we worked the ball out wide but couldn't get enough bodies
in the box. Parejo had one late curling effort which had the keeper
beaten but was just wide of the post.
The final whistle then went and the players were rightly clapped
off the pitch for a good performance and all that was missing was
a goal.
I thought at half time should have moved
Rowlands wide, put Buzsaky in the middle and replaced Mahon with
Agyemang. Saying that though we were pretty unlucky not to get a
least a point and I thought we played far better in the second half
than we did against Southampton.
We dominated the possession, got in
some great positions out wide but just couldn't get the final touch.
Coventry were hanging on for the 1-0 for an hour. This was a game
we should have won but I wasn't too downhearted afterwards. It's
rare to see us dominate an away game like that.
Cook looked like his old self
in the second half running at players with the ball and getting
good delivery in the box, Rowlands was
excellent and Parejo was pretty good as well. It was like watching
Arsenal, loads of good football but just couldn't score.
Rangers now travel to Aston Villa
where we are unlikely to get as much of the ball and will need to
make the most of any chances we get to avoid another defeat.
