It doesn't take much to turn things around at Rangers. A week ago Paulo Sousa looked like his time was running out as the likes of Paul Ince and Darren Fergusson were being linked with his job and a run of eight games without a win left many fans beginning to push that panic button and look over the shoulder at a relegation battle.

A draw at Southampton followed by a win over Swansea saw those rumours go away and after yesterdays win and performance, Sousa certainly now looks safe in his position which will hopefully give him time to a build a side for next season.

The fact that the improved results have come after switching from 4-4-2 back to 4-5-1 seems to have slipped under the radar a little but the return to five in midfield has certainly made Rangers more solid and with Ephraim brought into the middle we now look far more exciting going forward. Of course a lot of this has to do with the arrival of Abel Taarabt who was excellent against Swansea and made another start on the left wing for Rangers as Bristol City visited Loftus Road.

Paulo Sousa was forced into one change with Delaney replacing the injured Hall but the rest of the side remained the same. The bench certainly looked a strong one though with Helguson, Routledge, Cook and Vine waiting in the wings to come on.

Rangers kicked off attacking towards the school end and had an early chance after good work by Ephraim and Delaney created a chance for Taarabt to control the ball before volleying over the bar. Bristol City started the better of the two sides though and looked a real threat going forward with Maynard shooting wide of Cerny's post early on.

They almost won a penalty on eight minutes when a corner was headed towards goal by McCombe and cleared off the line by Alberti with what looked like more of his arm than his chest but the referee waved it away.

Rangers had a penalty claim of our own soon after with a swift counter attack seeing Taarabt get the ball and drive into the box but his rather theatrical dive was waved away by the referee and saw him booked for diving. It was hard to argue with that but the referee then let himself down by failing to issue to the same punishment to Maynard for an equally bad dive at the other end.

Rangers began to get on top and created a few chances to test the City keeper. Alberti drove a shot on the right straight at the keeper. A good build up involving Leigterwood and Lopez got Taarabt into the game and he played a lovely ball through to Di Carmine who beat the offside trap and forced a brilliant save from the City keeper. In truth through Di Carmine should have scored but it was good to see us at least get efforts on target.

Alberti and Taarabt also tested the keeper with decent efforts whilst at the other end Bristol City looked a threat from set pieces and should have scored when Sproule fired over from eight yards after a mix up in the Rangers defence.

Nicky Maynard had the best chance of the half for City as he volleyed high and wide when in a great position and the visitors were finishing the half the stronger of the two sides.

They had another penalty claim when Adebola, not for the first time, collapsed to the floor in a heap. Due to his weight and size it seemed to take an age for him to hit the deck under a fair challenge by Connolly and he was rightly booked for his theatrics.

That was the end of the first half action and Rangers could be pretty pleased with the efforts so far in what was an even game between two sides who are probably just a little short of enough quality to grab a playoff spot this season.

During the half time break Alberti was replaced by Routledge but despite the excitement felt when he got on the ball the former Spurs winger rarely delivered in the second half and had a disappointing game.

Adebola had the first chance of the second half firing wide of the post but in all it was a slow start to the second half with neither side really taking control and the game became very sloppy.

Rangers looked slightly more of a threat with Ephraim and Taarabt again linking well together to create a half chance for Di Carmine but with an hour gone it looked like another 0-0 was on the cards.

Lopez was looking impressive in midfield and his set pieces were vastly improved all afternoon. He curled a 25 yard free kick over the wall only for it to be saved low by the keeper. Taarabt and Lopez then linked well for the on loan Spurs man to shoot over the bar.

It was hard to see where a goal was coming from until a bold change by Sousa opened the game up. Connolly was down injured and Mahon looked ready to come on before a change of heart and instead of Mahon it was Helguson who came on as we went to a 4-4-2. Leigterwood switched to centre half with a lightweight central midfield of Lopez and Ephraim. It may well have been lightweight but it was certainly creative and Rangers were soon in front.

Di Carmine got away from McCombe only to be pushed over for a free kick. The big lump of a defender went mad screaming at the ref and the Italian and appeared to have a kick at Di Carmine as well. The referee saw nothing wrong with this and waved him away without even a booking.

Lopez lined the ball up from 25 yards out and after his earlier effort he had his eye in ready for this. He curled the ball high over the wall with an unstoppable shot into the top corner leaving the keeper well beaten as the Rangers fans celebrated a truly stunning goal.

Rangers were flying now and a fantastic pass by Ramage found Taarabt on the left who burst forward beating his man with ease before crossing for Helguson to volley just wide of the post. He has been guilty of missing some sitters recently but in this case he was very unlucky not to score.

Bristol City fans had been nosiy for much of the game but seemed resigned to defeat now as their side were creating little and Rangers looked more than comfortable. A their and final change saw Cook return in place of Di Carmine as we went back to 4-5-1 with Taarabt moving into the middle.

Rangers being Rangers made the final few minutes difficult giving away a sloppy goal. Helguson played a poor ball to Cook who under pressure lost out to Sproule and Cook had a tug at Sproule's shirt to give away the foul. The linesmen flagged for it but the ref played on and after Rangers stopped that gave them the chance to put the ball to the far post where Ramage had lost his man and McIndoe drilled in a brilliant volley past Cerny for 1-1. A really poor goal to give away but an excellent finish from the winger as the City fans sang "We're Bristol City, we always believe". They had reason to as well with their side pushing on for a winner but that belief was soon ended when Rangers grabbed a winner.

It was a fine goal too with Cook playing a nice pass to Delaney who put in an excellent low cross to the xi yard box where Taarabt was waiting to calmly slot the ball into the roof of the net before running to the fans in the lower loft in celebration.

It was a killer blow for City who never recovered and Rangers grew in confidence playing some lovely stuff through Cook, Taarabt, Ephraim and Helguson. We almost grabbed a third when a free kick by the corner flag picked out Routledge on the edge of the box and his volley was very well saved by the keeper.

After four minutes of injury time the final whistle went and Rangers had just about deserved a second win in a row to give us no more than an outside chance of the playoffs but should end any doubt about us being dragged into trouble.

It was a very enjoyable day in all with Chelsea losing England beating Scotland in the rugby and Rangers producing another very good performance.

Ramage was again excellent at right back as were the rest of the back four. Lopez was my man of the match for his best display since joining us and he looked like he would be worth keeping when his contract runs out in the summer. Taarabt and Ephraim once again excited the crowd and I thought Di Carmine did a decent job up front as did Helguson when he came on.

Still a long way to go for us to be thinking of promotion next season but it's a massive leap forward from just a few weeks ago. Amazing what a bit of confidence can do to a team.
