Rangers made it five games without a
win with a disappointing 2-1 defeat at struggling Barnsley.
Sousa made a surprise change to the
way the team lines up switching from the successful 4-5-1 back to
the 4-4-2 which many fans have been crying out for.
Personally I feel away from home the
4-5-1 works quite well and it's easy to forget that playing with
two up front saw us fail to score away for three months earlier
in the season. The change was made though and perhaps the biggest
surprise was the players asked to do that job.
Lee Cook was dropped from the 16 with
Matteo Alberti starting whilst Dexter Blackstock started his first
game since the draw with Coventry last month in place of boo boys
favourite Gavin Mahon. The Rangers skipper has come in for a fair
bit of stick recently but his protecting of the back four was certainly
missed in this game and proved to be Rangers first away defeat in
the league since early December.
Rangers played a more open attacking
system which can be good going forward but left us wide open at
the back and gave Barnsley several good early chances. Misfud was
causing problems with his pace and it was no surprise when Barnsley
took the lead though a deep cross to the far post which found Bogdaonvic
who beat Delaney to the ball and headed past Cerny for the opening
goal.
Rangers fought back and produced a good
equaliser when Alberti drive down the left and put in an excellent
cross for Delaney to head past the keeper at the near post.
The QPR fans sang in celebration of
the 4-4-2 system we were playing and were soon moaning that no protection
was being given to the back four as well fell behind. A mistake
by Stewart saw him head the ball away with Cerny coming to claim
it and De Silva fired home through a body of players.
Rangers continued with the 4-4-2 but
found rather than it meaning more goals we were easier to play against
and Barnsley had the better of the second half playing through us
as we struggled to keep the ball and create chances.
Gorkss had Rangers best chance of an
equaliser when he headed wide from a Lopez free kick but in the
end it was a typical QPR up north performance as we came up short.
This is still a learning curve for Sousa
but I hope if this performance does anything it is to prove we can't
play 4-4-2 away from home, it seems crazy that after finding a successful
formula away from home we go back to the failed one.
It will be interesting to see what Sousa
does in the coming weeks with two home games to come and finding
the right balance in midfield and attack remains a big problem for
us.
