It's always good when your birthday falls on a Saturday so you know you can see QPR in action which can make it a memorable day. I remember in 1995 we beat Chelsea on my birthday with Gallen getting the goal but since then we've not won too often on my birthday. So this year my birthday fell on another game but Wolves away was not my fixture of choice.
We rarely win at Wolves in fact I can only remember us winning once in the last ten years which was a midweek cup game. We usually get a good hiding at Molineux so I wasn't too confident of Rangers making it a good day for me yesterday.
Due to the engineering works on the train lines across the country it was a long journey to Wolverhampton via Reading but one that around 2,000 QPR fans made which was more impressive than the Wolves fans on the train up had predicted.
We were in the Steve Bull stand which runs along the side of the pitch rather than behind the goal. I don't know what it is about Wolves but it is rarely a good atmosphere in the away end and this game was no different with fans spread out across the stand and the right side seemed to be singing something completely different to the left side.
Rangers were unchanged again after winning the last two games. Gareth Ainsworth was among the subs in a more attack minded bench than in recent weeks.
The game didn't start too well for Rangers though as Wolves pressed forward backed by a noisy crowd and should have got a goal through their early pressure. Andy Keogh looked a real threat running in behind us and he went close early on with a close range header going wide.
Lee Camp was then called into action and parried a long range effort which almost fell to Keogh again but Camp recovered in time. It was a tough day for Camp with a very wet pitch and slippery ball he found it hard to claim shots at the first time of asking.
Rangers
were looking
in trouble
but we settled
after about
twenty minutes
and began
to have
some chances
of our own.
Mikele Leigterwood
lofted a
high ball
into the
box for
Agyemang
to bring
down with
an excellent
first touch
and his
shot from
an acute
angle was
just wide
of the far
post.
Rangers
then took
the lead
with another
Buzsacky
special.
Dexter Blackstock chased down two defenders on the left and the ball was given away to Vine who found Buzsacky and the Hungarian brought the ball down with his chest before firing a volley past the keeper into the bottom corner from just outside the box. That's ten goals for Buzsacky this season now which is pretty decent for a midfielder player who only joined in November.
Wolves
came back
at Rangers
and Michael
Gray was
a constant
threat to
Rangers
putting
in some
dangerous
crosses
but Andy
Keogh was
missing
chance after
chance with
the home
fans getting
on his back.
Rangers
had a great
chance to
make it
2-0 but
were denied
by the referee
when a swift
counter
attack saw
Rowan Vine
put clean
through
but the
referee
blew his
whistle
and gave
us a free
kick back
in our own
half. A
crazy decision
and he seemed
unable to
work out
the advantage
rule all
afternoon.
Rangers
lost Martin
Rowlands
through
injury so
Gavin Mahon
came on
and yet
again we
really did
miss Rowlands
when he
went off.
With the
board put
up for first
half stoppage
time Rangers
went to
sleep and
gifted the
home side
an equaliser.
Matthew Connolly looked like he had been fouled by Blake in the middle but we stood off Gray on the right and allowed him to take a touch and whip a cross into the middle where Keogh finally got one on target and headed past Camp into the bottom corner.
The half time whistle was a welcome relief to get out of the cold back down to the concourse where some QPR fans seemed to be having a fight with the police. This meant the bar was shut quickly and the scenes were quite ugly with the stewards getting most of the blame. I personally didn't see what started it all but quite a few QPR fans seemed to be angry about something.
Back to the football and Rangers got off to a dream start to the second half. Buzsacky lined up a free kick on the right which was delivered into the box but not really near any QPR shirts, Karl Henry brought the ball down with his arm and a penalty was given. It looked very harsh at the time and the TV footage doesn't do the referee any favours. The Wolves fans and players went mad and the usual long delay followed before the penalty could be taken.
Eyebrows were raised when Dexter Blackstock picked up the ball and walked over to take it but he looked confident and he ran out and placed it into the bottom corner for his third goal of the season.
The goal really seemed to lift Blackstock and he almost made it 3-1 soon afterwards., Mikele Leigterwood started off a quick breakaway and the ball fell to Blackstock on the left, he took one touch then blasted a volley just over the bar with the keeper beaten.
The weather was now taking a turn for the worse with a snow blizzard soaking us in the away end and the game became very frantic with neither side able to get much control of the ball.
Wolves looked to be running out of ideas though and were reduced to long range efforts which Camp was dealing with and the likes of Delaney and Connolly were getting in vital blocks and tackles around the edge of the box to protect the Rangers goal.
The referee then intervened and evened up the penalty count. Mancienne slipped and let Henry in down the left, he chased after him and got a touch of his shirt outside the box, Henry ran on and a few yards into the box before falling over and the penalty was given. It was a farcical decision and I think we'd have all been better off if he hadn't given either penalty.
It was given though and Ebanks-Blake faced up to Lee Camp from the spot for the second time this season and it was the same result as he found the back of the net.
Rangers then had Lee Camp to thank as he made up for some earlier errors with two brilliant saves. The first came from Blake after a cut back across goal saw the big striker have a simple tap in but Camp got down quickly and made an excellent save. He was called into action again as he leapt across to his left and turned another effort just wide.
De
Canio then
made a change
bringing
on Ainsworth
for Buzsacky,
it was an
attacking
move and
brought
a third
goal for
Rangers.
Vine did
well on
the left
cutting
inside to
find Ainsworth
who crossed
into the
box for
Leigterwood
to being
the ball
down and
smash a
volley into
the back
of the net.
My first
goal scorer
Buzsacky
and last
Leigterwood
bet was
looking
very good
now and
we were
all getting
very excited
in the Steve
bull stand
that three
points were
on the way
back to
London with
us.
The next ten minutes went by quite quickly with Wolves throwing everything at us but rarely looking like they would get a third equaliser. The home fans were getting restless until the referee gave the nod to give five minutes injury time. God knows where he got that from but as soon as that board went up there was an air of inevitability about the afternoon.
Rangers were standing firm but defending very deep and a hell of a goalmouth scramble brought the third equaliser of the day. Rowan Vine gave the ball away on a rare attack and they came at us with nine QPR players in our own box. Ebanks Blake got away from Rehmann and his shot was saved by Camp, the rebound found Blake again who hit the post this time then had another go which was blocked on the line by Blackstock. That surely had to be it but no we still couldn't hoof it clear and ball went wide to Keogh who somehow found space and placed a shot past Camp into the bottom corner.
The home fans went mad and a point had been rescued. The final whistle finally went to signal the end of a cracking game and once again we've thrown away a winning position to only draw a game.
Many fans were angry on the way out of the ground at our lack of a winning mentality but in truth a draw was probably a fair result. I found it difficult to get too upset about the result as that's the first time in many visits to Wolves we've looked like getting something from the game other than a good hiding.
Yes Vine should have done better on the break during injury time (Agyemang did him no favours by failing to make a run) but you can't really fault the desire, the third goal for them we were throwing bodies in the way of everything and were very unlucky to concede the way we did after just getting sucked into the desperation of it all and losing our shape for the first time all game.
I thought taking off Buzsacky was a big mistake, we should have taken off Blackstock and gone to 4-4-1-1 for the last few minutes. At the end of the day thought we've gone away to a side we always lose to away and scored three goals for the fourth time this month.
I
saw this
as another
step in
the team's
learning
curve and
we probably
learnt far
more with
then equalising
than we
would have
by holding
on. We're
not going
up this
season and
personally
I'm happy
to see us
continue
to pick
up points
whilst learning
as a team
along the
way.
Whether
we do learn
from this
or make
the same
mistakes
remains
to be seen
but I'm
hopeful
the players
and the
manager
will pick
up little
points along
the way
to make
us better
prepared
for next
season.
Watching
the bench
in the last
minute yesterday
it certainly
didn't look
like De
Canio was
telling
them to
sit on the
edge of
the box,
he was going
ballistic
at them.
We also missed Rowlands when he went off and we don't really have another player like him which needs to be addressed.
Anyway I thought it was a very good game, the weather was ridiculous with sun in our face one minute then a snow blizzard the next. All very strange and must have gone to the referees head with the two unbelievable penalty decisions. God knows where he got five minutes injury time from but to blame the referee would be pointless.
I am quite positive about how things are going but do have a few moans. I thought Blackstock looked lively after his goal and almost scored a screamer just afterwards but then he quickly went back to playing with his head down and his work rate was pathetic yesterday especially in the second half, he made a few token efforts to close players down but that's not good enough. I'd still stick with him as he has got ability but he is running out of chances.
Mancienne also had a disappointing game, too often he let his man get outside him to get crosses in and Camp made a few good saves but also dropped a few, I know the ball was wet and must have been hard to hold onto but for me it didn't look like he was pulling the ball into his chest to hold onto and was just parrying it and then hoping to get to the rebound quickly which almost cost us goals twice in the second half.
On the positive side Leigterwood had a good game and I thought Connolly did well at the back as well. Buzsacky took his goal really well and Agyemang worked harder up front than I've seen him for a while.
As
I say I
can understand
the frustration
and anger
at us throwing
away two
points but
I find it
hard to
get too
upset about
a draw at
Wolves when
you consider
what a shambles
we were
a few months
ago. If
we do want
to push
on next
year we
will have
to improve
but days
like yesterday
will go
a long way
towards
teaching
the players
what is
required.
