The
games have been
coming thick and
fast over Christmas
and the latest
one saw Rangers
make the short
trip to Watford,
which has rarely
been a happy hunting
ground for us.
Rangers usually
get the whole
end at Vicarage
Road so I was
in no rush to
get tickets for
this one but it
turned out to
be too late as
Rangers only had
2,000 tickets
and they sold
out quickly. I
was pretty disappointed
to miss out on
this one but then
again we always
lose at Watford.
So instead I opted
to watch the first
half via Soccer
Saturday and then
popped off to
Comet to look
at a new TV during
the second half
before seeing
Bee Movie at the
cinema.
The teams were
announced on the
official site
at about half
two and the reaction
on various message
board beggared
belief. De Canio
made changes after
a tough Christmas
schedule and two
more games to
come this week.
He rested Buzsacky
and Vine dropping
them to the bench.
The reaction was
one of doom and
gloom with most
posters on the
message boards
slating the manager
before a ball
was kicked. The
fact that we had
attacking options
on the bench to
come on and change
the game was lost
of most people
and it was more
than a little
frustrating to
see so many write
us off before
a ball was kicked.
De Canio kept
faith with Bob
Malcolm who was
arrested for drink
driving on Boxing
day and even had
the front to blame
the referee at
Plymouth for the
offence. The irony
of Big Bad Bob
being arrested
for speeding can't
have been lost
on anyone but
he started at
right back in
possibly his last
game for the club.
Damion Stewart
returned after
suspension in
defence whilst
there were changes
in midfield. Martin
Rowlands started
in the middle
with Leigertwood
suspended and
seventeen-year-old
Angelo Balanta
was handed a full
debut on the left
wing. Up front
Dexter Blackstock
returned to be
partnered by Marc
Nygaard.
Rangers started
on the back foot
with the home
side looking to
improve on a run,
which has seen
them fail to win
at home for two
months. On the
break Rangers
looked dangerous
and we quickly
took a shock lead.
Balanta got the
ball on the left
and brought it
down before playing
a lovely volleyed
pass through to
Blackstock. Dexter
ran in between
two defenders
and found himself
brought down for
a penalty in front
of the noisy 2,000
QPR fans.
Soccer Saturday
went straight
to the game with
the QPR fans visible
behind the match
day reporter,
I held by breath
as he reported
a penalty for
QPR. Martin Rowlands
stepped up to
take it and before
anything could
be said I could
see blue and white
hoped shirts in
the away end celebrating
as Rowlands sent
the keeper the
wrong way and
found the bottom
corner. 1-0 to
the super hoops
but still a long
way to go.
Watford were shell
shocked but continued
to push forward
as Rangers continued
to catch them
on the break.
Chris Barker won
a corner on the
left which Rowlands
floated into the
box and Blackstock's
deflected effort
was tipped just
over the bar by
the keeper. This
was all going
far too well and
the resulting
corner saw Stewart
run on and smash
a header into
the back of the
net for his fourth
goal of the season
and his third
in December. The
watching Danny
Shittu must have
been impressed
with the goal
and was very similar
to many of the
goals Big Dan
used to get for
us.
Back home I was
struggling to
believe we were
2-0 up and being
a typical QPR
fan had a sinking
feeling we'd probably
still get beat.
How wrong I was
though as things
got even better
before half time.
Watford had chances
to get back into
the game as a
Williamson shot
beat Camp and
hit the post whilst
Nathan Ellington
should have done
better with a
decent chance
from ten yards
out.
Rangers were flying
going forward
and were making
a mockery of the
moans and groans
many fans were
busy typing an
hour earlier on
the dotorg message
board. A nice
passing move saw
Rowlands combine
with Bolder who
found Balanta
and the youngster
showed great awareness
to knock it on
for Rowlands again
and he got into
space before volleying
past the keeper
and make it 3-0.
As the scoreline
came up on Sky
Sports News I
found it hard
not to laugh,
after sitting
through some right
crap this season
here I was missing
out on our best
performance.
Half time came
and it was still
3-0, I can only
imagine what the
scenes of joy,
excitement and
disbelief must
have been like
among the QPR
fans at Vicarage
Road.
The superstitious
side of me said
that I must spend
the second half
the same way I
have the first
but then I remembered
I'd just ordered
two cinema tickets
so we made our
way to the car
and made the journey
for a bit of shopping
and then onto
Uxbridge.
I decided against
listening to BBC
London on the
way as they were
doing the West
Ham game so instead
we put on a Baker
and Kelly podcast
and just hoped
that we'd hang
on to a great
victory. When
we arrived at
Comet my plan
to buy a new TV
seemed a genius
one as they were
showing final
score on BBC.
Carly pointed
out a few good
televisions to
buy but they were
showing Buggs
Bunny so I had
no real interest
in them and just
continued watching
Ray Stubbs and
the very slow
goal service they
have, why couldn't
they put on Sky
Sports and who
cares that Tottenham
have scored again,
what's the QPR
score.
Then it flashed
up, Watford 1
QPR 4 (Akos Buzsacky
80). Hurray three
points safe. Back
at the Vicarage
Road the action
had gone like
this. Shittu came
on at half time
and spent much
of his time up
front forcing
Nygaard to come
deep and mark
him. Watford got
back in the game
early on in the
half when a ball
to the far post
was headed across
goal by Francis
and Rehmann cleared
off the line only
to see the ball
hit Camp and roll
into the net.
A lifeline for
Watford but not
a great one. De
Canio made two
bold attacking
changes bringing
on Vine and Buzsacky
for the tiring
Ainsworth and
Balanta and the
change gave us
a new attacking
impetus which
got us a fourth
goal. Perhaps
De Canio does
know what he is
doing after all.
The goal came
when Rowlands
again did well
to find space
and he found Buzsacky
who waltzed round
the keeper, looked
up and placed
the ball in between
four Watford defenders
on the line into
the back of the
net. He ran the
full length of
the pitch to celebrate
with the jubilant
QPR fans and back
in Comet I wanted
to jump up and
down but decided
against that course
of action.
Typically we conceded
again with a brilliant
volley from Danny
Shittu and back
in Comet I spent
the final few
minutes of the
game blaming BBC1
for the fact the
game hadn't finished
yet. At Vicarage
Road there was
still time for
another chance
as Blackstock
did well to sprint
from the half
way line past
a defender before
shooting just
wide of the post
and agonisingly
missing out on
the goal he had
deserved.
In the end a 4-2
win was a stunning
result and sees
QPR move out of
the bottom three
to the heady heights
of nineteenth,
our highest league
position since
August.
My day ended with
the arranged trip
the cinema to
see Bee Movie
and then the goal
feast that was
Match of the Day.
So the final game
of the year ends
on a high note
for Rangers and
there are many
reasons to look
forward to 2008.
Rangers have not
had a better chance
to compete at
the top end of
this division
for a long time
and with the right
players brought
in Rangers should
have enough about
us to stay up
and find ourselves
in a position
to challenge next
season.
Of course the
relegation battle
is far from over
and we could easily
find ourselves
back in the bottom
three on Tuesday
against Ian Holloway's
Leicester, a fixture
that usually ends
in a draw at Loftus
Road. We do have
something to build
on though and
if the rumours
are true we have
some exciting
additions to look
forward to in
the next few days.
One incoming player
has been confirmed
with Kieran Lee
joining on loan
from Manchester
United on the
2nd January. Lee
can play at full
back or in midfield
and I expect he'll
be replacing Bob
Malcolm at right
back.
After that it's
a case of who
do you believe.
If reports are
to be believed
Lee will be joined
at QPR this week
by defenders Fitz
Hall (from Wigan)
and Martin Connolly
(from Arsenal)
along with forwards
Patrick Agyemang
(Preston) and
Darryl Murphy
(Sunderland).
A deal for Hogan Ephraim is also said to have been done. Rowan Vine and Akos Buzsacky are also expected to make loan moves permanent in January. Again these are just rumours and it remains to be seen who comes and who leaves during a big month for the club.
