Following on from
Saturdays draw at Leicester hopes
were high that Rangers could build
on that result and put in a better
performance at home to Plymouth.
Those hopes were quickly evaporated
when I went to have a bet in the
upper Loft and saw the team sheet.
To say I was disappointed is an
understatement. Just the one change
with Ben Sahar dropped and Daniel
Nardiello in. No real complain with
that but quite why Stefan Moore
was still in the side as well as
Zesh Rehmann was beyond me. I was
pissed off before a ball was kicked
and had a bet with my wife over
the game. I said that on fifty eight
minutes Moore would be taken off
and Ephraim brought on, it seemed
obvious to me and in truth that
was the only source of excitement
of those first 58 minutes counting
down to the inevitable change and
claiming my shiny pound coin.
Before the game new owners Bernie
Ecclestone and Flavio Briatorie
were out on the pitch signing autographs
for fans ready to see how their
new team was shaping up. I'd imagine
they weren't very impressed. Also
in town was former manager Ian Holloway
who brought his Plymouth side to
town, Holloway was in Hammersmith
before the game signing copies of
his new autobiography for QPR fans
which provides something of an eye
opener in how the club was run during
his time as manager.
Anyway back to the football and
the game kicked off with rangers
attacking towards the school end
and the QPR fans were in decent
voice. The Q block drummer was banging
away his we are the rangers boys
song and a long burst of Gregory's
blue and white army gave a vote
of confidence to the under pressure
manager from the supporters.
The game wasn't the best though
with Plymouth winning an early free
kick when Stewart needlessly pushed
Barry Hayles over. Halmosi lined
it up and curled a brilliant effort
over the wall and just inches wide
with Camp well beaten.
This woke Rangers up and a neat
move almost created our first league
goal of the season at Loftus Road
as Blackstock played a pass through
for Nardiello who beat the offside
trap but his effort was saved by
the keeper.
Rangers began to get into the game
with Leigertwood looking far more
confident in midfield and he used
the ball well looking to keep the
ball on the floor and keep possession.
Nardiello up front was showing excellent
movement to get in some good positions
but the offside flag was denying
him on several occasions. Perhaps
our best attacking weapon was Zesh
Rehmann who was having a good game
at right back. He was coming from
deep and keeping the ball well and
providing a few decent balls into
the box. His best delivery saw him
pick out Nardiello whose looping
header beat the keeper but bounced
off the top of the bar.
Plymouth continued to look a threat
from set pieces as Buzacky went
close with a great curling free
kick, which went inches wide. They
almost scored from a corner as our
zonal marking system gifted another
chance to the opposition. Stewart,
Cullip and co all made sure the
vital space was all marked nice
and tight and Plymouth players all
stood on the edge of the box with
no QPR players near them. The ball
went to the edge of the box with
Rangers marking space around the
six-yard box and we were lucky that
with time and space to smash a shot
in a Plymouth midfielder sliced
his effort well wide.
At the other end a defensive cock
up almost let Stefan Moore in but
the keeper did well to save at Moore's
feet. This was an improvement in
Moore's performance, he's touched
the ball at leas twice, which was
more than he had at Leicester.
At half time the sides were level
and I think John Gregory would have
been the happier manager as Rangers
without playing anywhere near their
best were doing Ok and looking capable
of winning the match. Quite what
happened at half time is anyone's
guess but to say the second half
went wrong for us is an understatement.
Plymouth came out of the blocks
flying as their midfield began to
dominate. The plan for them was
simple, keep the ball and switch
the play to the wings as often as
possible and we never looked like
being able to cope with it. Most
of the attacks were coming down
our right with Moore offering no
help at all to Rehmann crosses began
to fly into the box. Chris Barker
did well to come across and beat
Hayles to a header and clear the
danger with Damion Stewart standing
nowhere near his man.
It was no shock when Plymouth took
the lead and it was yet another
defensive cock up which lead to
the goal. Halmosi got the ball on
the left and cut inside Rehmann
who slipped and fell on his arse
leaving Halmosi space and he took
advantage placing a cracking shot
past Camp into the bottom corner.
Poor old Rehmann looked devastated
and the boos began to come for the
former Fulham man.
The confidence was now gone and
Rangers kicked off with a bizarre
new tactic that looked like something
from the rugby world cup. We took
two touches then hoofed the ball
high in the air down the wing as
several players chased after it.
The ball ended up in the stand and
it was hard not to laugh.
Rangers then built a promising attack
but the ball went wide to Rehmann
who was slaughtered by most fans
with boos and jeers so it was no
surprise he messed up the through
ball. I felt a bit sorry for Zesh,
I'm not exactly his biggest fan
but he was one of our better players
before the goal.
We almost got a goal back when Nardiello
did well to beat his man before
being brought down by on the edge
of the box. Rowlands stood over
the ball and curled a quality free
kick over the wall but it hit the
bar with the keeper beaten.
Gregory then made the change on
59 minutes (bugger I was so close).
Moore was replaced by Ephraim (that
was a shock) and Rehmann went off
to be replaced by Bignot who got
a heroes reception. The change didn't
have a great effect with Plymouth
soon 2-0 up.
Bignot failed to deal with a ball
down the left and Halmosi beat him
in the air to head across for Norris
who had strolled through the midfield
with no one picking him up and found
himself with an easy tap in. Game
over and this was the cue for many
fans to leave and those who stayed
must have been wondering why they
were bothering. We tried our hilarious
rugby kick off again which didn't
work, the referee called us back
to take it again and we tried the
same thing for a third time with
the same inevitable result. It looked
like something the team have worked
on in training which is frightening.
Ranger's confidence had gone and
the linesmen wasn't helping everyone's
mood with some very tight offside
decisions going against us. Nardiello
was playing right on the last shoulder
of the defence and made some great
runs behind the back four but at
times the ball through was a little
late and at others the linesmen
got decisions wrong. It was hard
to tell though if we were being
robbed or not but the one time we
did beat the offside trap Nardiello
smashed the ball into the crowd.
Gregory made his final change bringing
on Sahar for Nardiello who has been
the pick of a very bad bunch. Sahar
missed a sitter when a ball into
the box bounced over the defence
and the Chelsea man was clean through
but shot over the bar.
At the other end it could have been
a lot worse as Plymouth cut us open
at will playing some nice passing
football. Their midfield was far
better than ours and quite how Hayles
failed to make it 3-0 from a lovely
low cross is a mystery,
Rangers had a late penalty shout
as we decided to keep the ball on
the floor for the last ten minutes
but the ref was having none of it
and during injury time Rowlands
was denied by a good save with our
first shot on target all night
The final whistle brought a few
boos as another defeat means we
are the only club in the football
league to have not won a game yet
due to Sheffield Wednesday's cup
exploits.
This was another piss poor night
where we only had ourselves to blame.
Gregory needs to have a long hard
look at himself and ask why on earth
he is picking that team. Stefan
Moore is sadly just a waste of space,
what was the point of signing Hogan
Ephraim on loan and not picking
him. If we are looking to ease a
youngster into the side I'd rather
we eased one of our own in such
as Kieron St Aimie. Rehmann as well
being picked is unbelievable. To
be fair to him he did ok last night
but he is always a minute away from
a major cock up as he showed at
Luton last year. For Gregory to
continue to pick him beggars belief.
The bloke is not good enough for
this level and even struggled on
loan at Brighton last year.
When you have no real width it amazes
me that full backs who overlap are
left out of the side. Timoska seems
an obvious choice to me at right
back bombing forward on the right
and giving us options going forward.
On the left I'd have Bignot who
will get forward and take some of
the pressure off Rowlands. Instead
we have two full backs who don't
seem keen to go on the overlap and
in Barkers case I've not seen him
go past the halfway line too often.
Our only answer to a lack of width
so far has been to narrow and shorten
the pitch. I know it's difficult
to get loan players in at this stage
of the season but it shouldn't have
been a real shock that Cook and
Ainsworth would not be playing for
QPR at the start of the season so
we had all summer to sign a winger
or two rather than cross fingers
and hope Stefan Moore can do a job.
We've still got no creativity in
the side. Leigertwood at least tried
to play it on the floor and is improving.
Nardiello looks like he could be
a good player with the right service
he's not getting it with us though.
At half time the game was quite
even but all it took was for Plymouth
to step up a gear and they blew
us away. This isn't one of the better
sides in the division either which
is a worry. One I think I noticed
in the battle of the soon to be
ex QPR managers was that ollies
team were organised and every player
seemed to have a job and know what
to do. That should be the least
you expect from a team but it's
something we have not looked like
doing all season. Plymouth were
nothing special no more than average
and to be honest I don't think they'll
do well this season but they were
still far better than us and at
least tried to play it on the floor.
For various reasons I won't be able
to see Rangers live again until
we play Norwich next month, I'll
be very surprised if Gregory is
still manager by then unless we
see a major improvement in the next
few weeks.
