After another two heavy
defeats in a row it was back to Loftus
Road for a must win match in front of
the SKY television cameras against a Norwich
City team in just as bad form as ourselves.
Before the game it was rather strange
to walk into the Queen Adelaide for a
drink and see two Italian Journalists
with life size cardboard cut outs of Mr
and Mrs Flavio Briatore taking photos
of fans with the cut outs. When I walked
in my wife Carly was having her photo
done with Flavio and being asked who she
wanted as the new manager. My mate Phil
said Rodney Marsh, which confused the
hell out of the Italians and after Phil
tried to sexually assault the life size
Mrs Flavio some form of normality returned
to the pre match routine.
This wasn't going to be an ordinary night
and when we got to the ground news that
the likes of Naomi Campbell were in the
directors box wearing a QPR scarf was
one of the most ridiculous sights I've
seen at QPR since Zesh Rehmann was introduced
as the new Danny Shittu.
Anyway after a first goalscorer bet (good
old Martin Rowlands) we made our way to
our seats to see what team Mick Harford
was going to send out for this big game.
It was a little surprising to be honest.
New loan signing Martin Cranie replaced
Danny Cullip in the back four alongside
the recalled Damion Stewart. Martin Rowlands
continued at right back whilst Chris Barker
was in for a good night at left back marking
someone even slower than he is.
Other new loan signing Jason Jarrett was
dropped to the bench as Leigertwood returned
to midfield whilst Ephraim and Ainsworth
were the wide men. A knee operation for
Dexter Blackstock ruled him out for the
night and for the next six weeks so Ben
Sahar and Rowan Vine started up front.
The first half won't have done much to
attract any more supermodels to Loftus
Road and any neutrals watching at home
must have been reaching for the remote
to watch double Eastenders viewing figures.
It wasn't the most entertaining of games
but I don't think anyone expected much
else. Rangers had to battle for everything
and try and get the ugly win we so desperately
needed.
It didn't take long to realise why Norwich
were struggling as they looked truly woeful
especially up front where our back four
were having their easiest night of the
season.
Rangers were playing direct
but we at least had someone to aim for
with balls to Ainsworth's head and Rowan
Vine's chest a far better option than
aiming for the corner flag. We were also
playing some decent stuff when we got
the ball in the final third with Leigertwood
very impressive on the ball with the movement
of the front two certainly help us play
some more football. Ephraim on the left
looked a threat but he made it a little
too easy for the visitors by having to
cut in on his right foot all the time,
which became predictable.
Ainsworth had a few lung busting runs
down the right but couldn't produce the
final ball into the middle. Our first
chance almost opened the scoring when
Vine cut in on the left and laid it back
to Leigertwood who smashed a shot towards
the near post which had the keeper beaten
and was just inches wide of the post.
Ainsworth shot straight at Marshall during
a good attacking spell whilst Sahar and
Ephraim had penalty claims turned away
by the referee during a tense first half
which we had the better of but at half
time the 0-0 score line was probably a
fair reflection as we hadn't made the
Norwich keeper work too often.
During half time we spoke in the blue
and white bar and all agreed that if we
couldn't beat this Norwich side we might
as well give up. Our chances were increased
after half time when Dion Dublin was taken
off and without him they were even worse
at the back.
The QPR fans were in excellent voice urging
the team on and they responded with a
second half full of fight and passion.
Rowan Vine was looking impressive up front
and won the ball back from Shackell and
burst into the box on the right wing and
was clearly pulled back for a penalty
but the referee was having none of it
and waved play on. The fans booed but
were soon cheering the team on again when
Rowlands ran from deep with no one challenging
him and hit a shot from 30 yards which
had the keeper beaten but hit the post.
Rowlands went close again from a free
kick. The keeper left a massive gap to
his right and I was crying out for Rowlands
to curl it over the wall into that corner,
as the keeper was never going to get back
in time. Instead Rowlands went for power
and got it on target but Marshall saved.
It was becoming frustrating but you could
sense a goal was coming. A ball into the
box found Vine and tried to get away from
his man which he looked to be doing before
he got a boot to the chest and went down,
this time the referee pointed to the spot
and Loftus Road celebrated for seconds
before those horrible moments before a
penalty is taken when the hope is almost
unbearable. Martin Rowlands stepped up
to take it and looked more composed than
I was as he again went for power and although
the keeper went the right way it was too
strong for him and the ball nestled into
the back of the net. Rangers celebrated
and for the first time since the end of
last season I celebrated a league goal
at Loftus Road.
After this there was only one team in
it and god knows how we didn't add to
that opening goal. We won a corner on
the left, which Rowlands took to a huge
ovation from the Q, P and R blocks.
The ball was half cleared
to Ainsworth finally got a sweet connection
on one of his volleys, he powered it towards
goal but Marshall made an excellent save
to turn it wide. From Ephraim's corner
the marking was QPR like and allowed Stewart
to attack the ball and his header was
on target but again well saved. Another
corner followed which this time fell to
Vine who hit a lovely volley, which was
on target but again matched by a brilliant
save. Fair play to Marshall in the Norwich
goal, without him it would have been a
real hammering.
The Rangers fans were loving it and singing
the names of new owners Flavio Briatore
and Bernie Ecclestone, I think the last
owner to have his name sung by the fans
was Chris Wright, lets hope this venture
turns out to be a bit more successful
Rangers made a couple of changes as the
flow of the game began to be disrupted
and we looked happy to settle for the
1-0. Stefan Moore came on for Sahar and
slotted onto the left wing. Ephraim looked
like he was supposed to go up front but
seemed happy to stay out wide as well
leaving us with very little up front.
A knackered looking Ainsworth had done
his bit and was replaced by Timoska.
Norwich had sod all going forward and
didn't threaten at all but with ten minutes
to go we seemed to go into panic mode
giving the ball away and wasting time
at every opportunity. The referee didn't
look pleased with this and was topping
his watch all the time so it wasn't really
a surprise when he added five minutes.
Flavio was so angry with this in the director's
box he almost lost his glasses as he looked
like he was catching the QPR bug and kicking
every ball from his seat, which was great
to see.
Rangers had a chance for a second when
Ephraim was put through after great play
from Leigertwood but his shot was again
saved. Ephraim got clattered soon after
and limped off to give Jason Jarrett a
home debut.
Rangers spent most of injury time wasting
time in the corner, which is never good
to watch, but understandable given the
fact we haven't won all season. Norwich
had one late free kick after a needless
foul by Timoska but it came to nothing
and the final whistle was greeted with
a huge roar and sense of huge relief from
the QPR fans which included Lee Cook celebrating
in the upper loft.
This was far from the perfect performance
but it was certainly the best I've seen
us play this season which is not hard.
The performance or lack of from the opposition
should be taken into consideration but
you can only beat what is put in front
of you. At the back we looked pretty strong
for once with Cranie comfortable on the
ball and Stewart putting in an impressive
performance without his usual switching
off moments.
In midfield I was very impressed with
Leigertwood who used the ball very well
and looked very skilful. When we signed
him he looked like a defender playing
out of position but on this evidence he
is settling in very well to his new position.
Adam Bolder had his best
game for a while alongside him whilst
out wide you can't fault the commitment
of Ainsworth although his end product
was frustratingly poor at times. Ephraim
also had a good game and is getting better
all the time, the news that he has extended
his loan spell is very good news. Up front
I was very impressed with Rowan Vine whilst
Ben Sahar showed some nice touches but
is desperately in need of a goal.
So a win at last and a new manager to
come in will send us into this International
break in high spirits. Ipswich are next
at Loftus Road and we'll need to build
on this performance to make sure we pull
away from the bottom of the table.
