Rangers were given a boost going
into the game against Coventry with the news of
two signings. A game doesn't seem to go by without
someone making a debut these days and this time
it was Scott Sinclair, a long time target of Rangers
and most clubs in the division who agreed a one
month loan on Monday. Sinclair replaced Ephraim
who had been recalled to West Ham. The other signing
was the extension of Rowan Vine's loan, which will
see him stay at QPR until January with a £2million
transfer to West London on the agenda.
Sinclair was the only change to the side that won
so well on Saturday but this was a much tougher
test against Iain Dowie's Coventry who have been
much improved this season.
The game started slowly to say the least with both
sides playing quite cautiously showing a little
too much respect for each other. Coventry set their
stall out early with a nasty looking tackle on Scott
Sinclair, although they weren't a dirty side they
were very physical and made sure we didn't get much
time on the ball, pretty similar to how we've played
the last few years really but with a bit more quality
in the final third.
Coventry looked the more dangerous of the two sides
and were winning the midfield battle to keep the
ball in our half. They were a very big side and
it looked like men against boys at set pieces with
the likes of Adebola towering over Cranie and co.
Chances were few and far between though with the
linesmen's flag putting an end to most moves. Rangers
showed signs of how De Canio wants his team to play
with some very exciting quick passing movements,
which almost resulted in goals. Buzsacky and Vine
combined with one touch passes to put Sinclair through
but the linesmen's flag denied Sinclair and to be
fair he put the chance wide anyway.
Nygaard was holding the ball up well and playing
the target man role well with Rowlands, Sinclair,
Vine and Buzsacky all bursting forward to support
him.
Our first real sight of goal came when Sinclair
got the ball on the left and beat two players with
a nice piece of skill before seeing his deflected
shot fly just wide of the post. Sinclair looked
an exciting player when he got on the ball but credit
to Coventry who quickly put two men on the youngster
to nullify his threat.
The story of the night though came in the last twenty
minutes of the half when Rangers lost three key
players to injury. First up was Martin Cranie who
came across to win a good strong tackle in his own
box, eh got up and limped away and looked in some
pain. As he limped off it didn't look good but not
as bad as it turned out with him suffering a broken
leg which ends his loan spell at the club. That's
a real shame as he has been superb for us in the
last few weeks and really tightened the defence
up. His return to Portsmouth is a big blow to us
but fingers crossed Cranie can get himself fit again
soon and get back playing as he is a fabulous talent
and there is no reason why he won't be able to make
a name for himself in the Premiership.
Sampsa Timoska replaced Cranie and slotted in as
a central defender a position where he played most
of his games back in Finland.
The change caused a few worries at the back with
the movement of the front two but the only time
they really tested Lee Camp was when Rowlands came
back to defend as he won the ball off Adebola he
turned it goal wards forcing Camp into a decent
save.
At the other end Sinclair had another effort saved
by the keeper as the game began to come to life
but another injury then caused a further set back.
This time it was Leigertwood who got a boot to the
face and ended up with a broken nose. Leigertwood
was replaced by Bolder and although the club captain
had a decent game it was apparent how much we missed
Leigertwood with the drive forward from the midfield
missing when he went off.
Marc Nygaard was next to go pulling a hamstring
and although he tried to run it off he looked in
agony when Daniel Nardiello eventually replaced
him. So De Canio was forced into three changes before
half time, not exactly the ideal situation and with
the game disrupted by all the stoppages there was
no real flow to the action.
Coventry continued to have the better of things
dominating in midfield but when half time came they
hadn't really threatened our goal too often.
During the break De Canio made some tactical changes,
which brought about a big improvement after the
break. De Canio switched to a 4-2-3-1 formation
with Rowlands and Bolder sitting in front of the
back four, Buzsacky pushed further forward with
Vine and Sinclair out wide. The formation was similar
to the one Chelsea played under Mourinhio with Buzsacky
in the Lampard role but Nardiello struggled with
the Drogba role as he is not at his best with his
back to goal. There was also a change at the back
with Mancienne going into the middle and Timoska
to right back.
The change worked with Rangers beginning to get
a grip on things in midfield and the surge forward
of the Coventry midfield was finally halted.
Rangers began to push forward and took the lead
five minutes into the second half. It was a goal
out of nothing as a long ball forward was cleared
as far as Buzsacky and the Hungarian took a touch
and then smashed an unstoppable left footed effort
past the keeper into the top corner. A brilliant
goal from the Rangers number ten and he is already
looking like a bargain.
The Rangers fans were in fine voice now with De
Canio's name being chanted and the little Italian
responded with a double thumbs up and an excited
wave to the Q Block which was great to see and also
very amusing.
De Canio showed he was not afraid to change things
during the game as he moved players about in a bid
to stop the opposition with Mancienne/Timoska regularly
swapping positions as well as Vine and Sinclair.
Not all of his tactical changes worked but it was
good to see a manager try and make changes to try
and affect a game and I'm sure once the players
get used to the new manager they'll be able to adapt
to change far easier during games and it will probably
improve them as players.
Coventry's main threat being Adebola who hit the
side netting after a strong run on the right before
he switched to the other wing and beat Barker to
the ball before smashing a shot high into the upper
school end.
Ranger's lead was a slender one and we were being
pushed back with an equaliser looking on the cards
before it eventually came after an hour. It came
from a ball down the middle which Mifsud got the
ball and despite looking offside he ran towards
goal, Camp came rushing out but the Maltese International
took the ball round Camp and with the aid of a deflection
off Timoska the ball looped into the back of the
net. It was disappointing but probably a fair reflection
of the game.
Coventry had looked a good side, well organised
and lively in attack and at times Rangers struggled
to hang on with everyone behind the ball. The management
on the side were urging the team to push up but
the players looked happy enough to try and hold
on for the point. Bolder was working hard but not
offering enough protection to the back four whilst
the ball was just not sticking up front as Nardiello
struggled to get in the game meaning we were constantly
on the back foot.
Rangers were not afraid to get stuck in with Rowlands
diving into some strong and tasty challenges in
midfield and chances were back to being few and
far between.
Rangers looked to have settled for a point and during
the last ten minutes we began to get more of the
ball and played in Coventry's half. Buzsacky tried
his luck from a free kick on the right but could
only manage to hit the wall (which was nowhere near
ten yards back) before a Rowlands free kick was
just inches too high for the onrushing Damion Stewart.
One late chance came from a Buzsacky corner to the
near post which Stewart flicked goal wards but his
effort was just wide and only needed the slightest
touch to divert the ball into the back of the net.
Mifsud then had a shot well saved by Camp as the
game went into injury time with Rangers probably
happy to take the point. It wasn't to be though
and with less than a minute remaining of stoppage
time Coventry grabbed the winner. A ball into the
box found Kyle who climbed over Timoska and headed
past Camp to win the game for Coventry. There is
probably no better feeling than winning away from
home in the last minute so the Coventry celebrations
were pretty much understandable. Similarly there
is no worse feeling than losing in the last minute
and as the final whistle went soon after the QPR
fans and players were devastated by the late loss.
In the end the result was probably about right.
Coventry had been the better side for most of the
game and looked a very settled and impressive unit
who should continue to do well this season. A defeat
to Iain Dowie's team is certainly no disgrace.
The game was probably lost with the injuries in
the first half, to lose the spine of your team is
not easy to recover from and with no like for like
replacements available we struggled to play at our
best but still came within 30 seconds of getting
a decent point.
Although many fans seem to be back in depression
mode I thought there were a lot of positive to take
from the game. The back four struggled when Cranie
went off but still managed to work well together
with Stewart having a strong game and Timoska did
ok at both right back and central defence.
In Midfield I was again impressed by Buzsacky, who
took his goal really well and out wide Scott Sinclair
looks a player of real potential but we need to
try and get him in the game more as we hardly gave
him the ball in the second half. Rowlands also did
well fighting for everything in midfield and was
very disciplined in doing a job for the team rather
than looking to get forward all of the time.
Upfront we were less impressive with Vine having
a quiet game and although Nardiello struggled with
the lone forward role in the second half I don't
think he was anywhere near as bad as some fans on
message boards have made out today.
As for the manager I was quite impressed wit him
again. Coventry were running the midfield in the
first half so he switched it at half time to get
Rowlands in the middle and we got on top and scored.
When we had the ball we played with Buzsacky pushed
forward plus Vine, Nardiello and Sinclair, the problem
was we didn't use the ball very well when we had
it.
Coventry were a good side but De Canio's changes
of tactics, which was more a 4-2-3-1 than plain
5 in midfield, got us back in the game and for the
last ten minutes we were in control and looked the
more likely to win the game. It was a fine line
last night, if Stewarts chance from Buzsacky's corner
in the last few minutes goes in we win the game
and I'd imagine many would be praising the manager
but Stewart missed and they took their chance in
the last minute.
The only thing I thought De Canio got wrong was
playing Vine wide, I'd have had him in the middle
and Nardiello out wide but he's only been with the
players a week so I am sure given time he'll work
out the best way to use his players.
Rangers now face a tough trip to Crystal Palace
on Saturday who are due a win and will be desperate
to get it against us. If we can go there and play
at our best we can get a result but no doubt we
are going to miss Cranie and it will be interesting
to see what changes De Canio makes to the side.
