Quite why I expected any thing other that a
dismal performance and early cup exit is beyond me. It seems
to happen every year and every time I go along thinking this
year will be different. It doesn't seem to matter who the
manager is or who the players are put QPR up against a lower
league side in the Carling Cup and 99 times out of 100 we'll
get beat. This year it was Leyton orient traveling to Loftus
Road looking to cause an upset although the only real upset
would have been us winning.
With only the South Africa Road, Paddock and School End stands
open the atmosphere was non-existent among the home fans and
the game felt like a pre season or a reserve game at times.
Still with a crowd of 5,000 the club failed to cope with huge
queues outside the stadium as stewards tried to work out which
of the 14,000 empty seats they could put people in. Once people
did get inside the ground they found that the bar ran out
of beer and there was no hot food left by half time. Good
job it wasn't busy really otherwise it would have been chaotic.
For the game we were sat right on the halfway line above the
director's box in seats designed for hobbits, I thought the
leg room was bad in the upper loft but this was unbelievable.
I had a look to see if anyone with bags full of money was
in the directors box but only saw Dexter Blackstock, Tom Watt
and Gianni Paladini who didn't look happy all night which
became a bit clearer when I saw the news of the takeover falling
through this morning.
As for the football John Gregory made a few
changes to the side that drew at Bristol City on Saturday.
Danny Cullip replaced Damion Stewart in the heart of defence
whilst Marcus Bignot also returned n place of John Curtis.
Nick Ward made his first start on the right wing whilst the
forward line of Stefan Moore and Marc Nygaard didn't fill
many people with confidence. Rangers had no strikers on the
bench, which we were later told was due to injuries.
The game started as the rain poured down and neither side
looked impressive during the early stages. Rangers had plenty
of the ball but didn't create any opportunities over than
long range shots. Nick Ward worked some space for himself
before shooting straight at the keeper before Rowlands tested
the keeper with a decent effort.
At the other end we looked a little wobbly at the back with
the normally reliable Cullip and Bignot looking a long way
short of match fitness. Adam Boyd tested Lee Camp with a low
shot but the QPR number one did well to get down and parry
it away. The game was dire to watch and as the rain lashed
down the QPR players looked like they'd rather be somewhere
else.
Orient weren't really taking advantage but had enough chances
to have the game won before half time. Boyd was the guilty
man getting into space in the box and firing wide of the post
but the chances kept coming mostly from distance as they fired
on shots at Camp but most of them were off target.
Rangers best move came when midway through the half when we
put a few passes together and nick Ward came in field to get
past his man and fire in a shot but it lacked power and the
Orient keeper made a comfortable save. When Ward came infield
he looked a decent player and he played a lovely defence splitting
pass for Moore to run onto but he was a little slow to react
and allowed the keeper to come out and get to the ball. A
nice ball into the box by Rowlands almost opened the scoring
but Nygaard's header went wide of the post.
At half time it was a relief to have a break from that dross
and I hoped that it would improve but sadly it didn't.
Rangers had an early chance to take the lead right after half
time when Ward shot over the bar after Bailey had done well
to create the chance. That was a rare moment of hope though
and Orient soon took the lead much to the delight of their
noisy fans. It came when Rangers failed to deal with a long
ball forward, the offside trap failed and Boyd tried to control
the ball but it flew off his knee and the ball slipped in
behind the back four with Rehmann looking a bit lost, Demetriou
ran onto it and placed a shot past Camp into the bottom corner
for 1-0.
Some QPR fans began to boo the team and more joined in when
the performance got worse. Orient were very unlucky not to
kill the game off when Corden breezed past Rehmann and crossed
for Gray to aim a header on target but Camp made a magnificent
save to deny them a second goal. That second goal did come
though a few minutes later when we conceded a soft penalty.
Cullip appeared to be fouled in the move but clearly pulled
Gray down after the initial foul and it was a penalty. Cullip
complained and was booked, it was a decision that could have
gone either way to be honest and it was hard to feel too aggrieved
at the decision, as Orient thoroughly deserved a second goal.
Adam Boyd stepped up to take the spot kick and sent Camp the
wrong way to virtually end our participation in the Carling
Cup for another year.
Gregory then made a change giving a first team debut to Kireon
St Aimie in place of the woeful Stefan Moore and we switched
Nick Ward to center forward. St Aimie looked lively when he
came on full of running on the right and we soon got back
in the game. The goal came when Ward was put through but a
last ditch challenge saw the ball roll across the face of
the goal for Rowlands to slide in and get a goal his performance
deserved.
This should have been the cue for a real push to get back
in the game but it never really came. We won a few corners
and free kicks but didn't really look like scoring from any
of them. Damion Stewart and John Curtis made late cameo appearances
as we went three at the back to push more players forward.
The equalizer never came though and in the end the Orient
players were celebrating with their fans as the QPR players
were booed off to chants of What a load of rubbish.
This was a dire performance from Rangers with only Rowlands
and Mancienne looking anything like their normal selves. At
the back Cullip and Bignot both looked a long way short of
match fitness whilst Camp was a little unsettled in goal.
He did make one great save but at corners he was flapping
more than I've ever seen him before. Rangers lacked any real
width and creativity in midfield with the Bolder/Bailey partnership
not really working in home games. Nygaard and Moore were pretty
poor up front but to be fair to them we created nothing for
either of them during the game.
John Gregory will be angry with the way his side played and
will want a huge improvement at the weekend. I think most
fans will be able to laugh off this result, as a typical QPR
in the cup kind of night but the lack of creativity in the
side will be something that should worry John Gregory.
