When the fixture list was released Blackpool away
was probably the one game most travelling fans looked out for
but we were to be disappointed with the trip to be made in December
rather than during the summer months (although to be honest we'd
have got soaked if the game was played in August).
So on Friday we made our way up on the train to Blackpool for
a weekend of fun, sun and good football. In the end we only got
one of those and the fun came in the pubs with a few hundred QPR
fans rather than at Bloomfield Road.
As we walked to the stadium the wind was ridiculously strong and
it was probably the coldest I've ever been at a football match,
it made Oldham in December seem like Barbados. With a temporary
stand along the half way line and no roof it was going to take
a bloody good performance from Rangers to warm us up.
The teams ran out just before three o'clock to a
decent reception and with the public address system not making
it's way to the away end it was hard to see what the team was.
We worked it out after a while but didn't realise until the next
day that Stefan Bailey and under 18's keeper Chris Goodchild were
the other substitutes.
De Canio was forced into changes from the side that lost at Stoke
due to Blackstock's suspension and defender Sampsa Timoska fell
ill on the way to the game. Michael Mancienne also missed out
through injury to the team was changed to a 4-3-3 system. Martin
Rowlands slotted in at right back with Big Bob Malcolm alongside
Stewart at the heart of the Rangers defence. Adam Bolder returned
to midfield alongside Buzsacky and Leigertwood whilst there was
a rare start for Ben Sahar on the left whilst fellow Chelsea loanee
Scott Sinclair started on the right with Vine down the middle.
Rangers began the game quickly attacking towards the end with
a stand and we were almost celebrating a goal within 90 seconds.
Rowan Vine cut inside on the right and saw his deflected curling
shot drift just wide of the post. Rangers had the wind behind
them and a Buzsacky corner caused panic as it dipped under the
bar and Blackpool struggled to get he ball clear. It was a promising
start to the game but soon settled down into a dire game with
neither side coping to well with the conditions.
Rangers struggled to put passes together too often over hitting
the ball when in good positions and as has been the case recently
we trued to walk the ball into the net rather than having a shot.
This way won us a few corners but didn't really test the keeper
in difficult conditions and as the half wore on it was clear a
few players didn't fancy it. Particularly Ben Sahar who has plenty
of ability but doesn't look happy at Rangers and his lack of effort
at times showed why he's not played too often this season.
Blackpool were beginning to get a grip on the game and went close
with a dangerous cross into the middle saw Camp beaten but Burgess
headed wide of the post. That should have been a wake up call
for Rangers but we continued to struggle and despite having the
wind in our favour we spent large parts of the half defending
rather than attacking.
It took an outstanding save from Lee Camp to keep the scores level
when a ball into the box reached Burgess whose close range effort
looked a certain goal before Camp threw out an arm and turned
it around the post.
Stewart then lost a battle with Burgess as the big striker blasted
over the bar and fans began to get a little restless with the
game slipping away from us.
We did have our moments at the other end but they were few and
far between. Buzsacky struck a long-range free kick straight at
the keeper whilst Vine opted for a long-range volley rather than
a pass, which was easily saved. Our best chance came after a back
pass was awarded and we had an indirect free kick from 12 yards
out. Chris Barker stood over it but rather than have a shot we
played it back to Buzsacky who was 30 yards out and his shot was
deflected wide. The Hungarian looked dangerous from corners but
when the half time whistle went it had been a disappointing performance
so far in freezing cold conditions.
During half time some fans began to strip off and dance topless
which was funny to see and as the second half began a few QPR
fans did a topless conga. Any sense of humour was lost on the
stewards though who man handled one bloke and threw him out without
his jumper so he was left outside in a freezing cold wind. It
was an unbelievable over reaction from the stewards to a few blokes
having a bit of fun and trying to keep themselves entertained
during a dire game of football.
Anyway back to the football and De Canio made one change at half
time bringing on Marc Nygaard for Ben Sahar.
The game was pretty dire to watch with neither side looking capable
of putting a few passes together and the wind was ruining the
game as a spectacle. Blackpool continued to cope better with the
conditions and pushed forward for a winner but lacked a cutting
edge up front and rarely forced Lee Camp into action during the
first twenty minutes of the half.
Rangers had chances on the break as we got into some good positions
but too often we went for the wrong option with Vine and Buzsacky
both shooting over the bar and wasting the chance to get the ball
over when out wide. The frustration was beginning to grow among
the travelling fans as the game began to slip away from us in
the second half and the ball just wouldn't stick up front and
we began to look like a side desperate to hang on for the point.
De Canio made another change taking off Vine and bringing on Ainsworth,
which brought a few, boos from the fans but in fairness Vine hadn't
been at his best.
Blackpool began to create a few chances as we began to make some
basic errors. Bob Malcolm's inability to jump, win a header or
kick a ball to a team mate was costing us and he was getting a
torrent of abuse from QPR fans for his pathetic showing. Camp
was called into action to make two decent saves and was heavily
under pressure as corner after corner was thrown into the box.
De Canio tried to change things and brought on Stefan Moore to
give some more pace going forward but he was soon to find out
that the Moore he sees in training rarely turns up on a match
day. Buzsacky was the man to make way, which again angered many
fans, but after taking a knock at Stoke he may not have been able
to complete ninety minutes.
The pressure began to increase and we continued to make basic
errors. Rowlands dived in two footed by the corner flag to concede
a needless free kick and with a strong wind behind them every
free kick and corner was going to cause problems.
A quickly taken free kick outside the box should have opened the
scoring as Burgess was put in with an open goal but his first
touch bounced off him and drifted wide of the post
As the ninety minute mark approached many QPR fans began to leave
and looked very fed up with another poor showing on the road,
the only plus point was that it looked like Blackpool were as
inept as us up front but as the pressure continued one mistake
by Stewart gifted them the win they deserved. It came from a long
ball from deep and Stewart looked to head it clear but just succeeded
in heading across goal and Burgess was unmarked to head into the
corner of the net and set up wild celebrations in the home ends.
Rangers created nothing in the final minute and ended the game
with another away defeat and three points adrift in the relegation
zone. The fans made their feeling hard giving the players some
unbelievable stick as they came over to clap the fans. Personally
I was too cold to say anything to them and just walked away to
try and find a warm pub, something we failed to do as we watched
the Arsenal game in the coldest pub I've ever been in.
So another defeat on the road and the panic button is being pressed
by more than a few fans. This is certainly not good enough and
things need to improve quickly if we are to get out of the relegation
zone. Just a week ago things looks so bright with the feeling
being that we were going to hammer someone but a week on I can't
see where the next goal is coming from let along a thrashing.
The defence continues to look a mess with Bob Malcolm
drop kicking Gus Ceaser of the throne of worst player I've ever
seen in the hoops. Quite what Danny Cullip has done to be released
for this idiot to play is beyond me and Marcus Bignot must be
feeling a little put out at being loaned out then seeing us have
to play Rowlands at right back.
One of Rangers major failing is that we are at times trying to
walk the ball into the net, we really need to get a balance to
our game where we play this pretty football but also know when
to get a foot in and fight because very few teams in this division
are going to give us time and space to play our football.
We need to get back to basics starting with the London derby against
Crystal Palace on Tuesday.
