After Tuesdays abysmal performance
at Ninian Park it was hoped that Rangers would produce a reaction
to that display and come out fighting. What followed was one of
our best performances of the season.
The day didn’t have the greatest of starts though for Rangers.
News came through that Luigi De Canio’s father had died and the
QPR manager flew back to Italy to be with his family at this difficult
time. The club have given De Canio as long as he wants to be with
his family and he is unlikely to return until later this week.
Obviously our sympathies are with De Canio during this difficult
time.
The tabloids have seen this as a sign that De Canio is leaving
QPR but before he left he picked the team for the game and gave
Joe Dunbar strict instructions on how the team should play so
that doesn’t sound like the actions of a man looking to leave.
It’s a difficult time for De Canio though moving to a new country
away from his family and to then lose his father is not going
to make it any easier for him to settle in England and it will
be interesting to see how this develops over the next few weeks
and months.
Back to the football though and before leaving De Canio made a
few changes to the side that lost at Cardiff. Fitz Hall and Matthew
Connolly missed out through injury although Connolly was among
the substitutes. Michael Mancienne started at right back and there
was a return for Zesh Rehmann at centre half who amazingly booed
by some QPR fans when his name was read out. Hogan Ephraim replaced
Mikele Leigterwood as we switched to a 4-4-2. Rowlands went back
into the middle and Buzsacky moved to the right wing. Rowan Vine
moved up front alongside Patrick Agyemang.
Rangers kicked off attacking towards a sold out School End where
the Bristol City fans were sitting and probably expecting an easy
win for their promotion chasing side. They had a shock coming
though as Rangers went on the attack from the first minute.
Rowlands looked very happy back in central midfield and won a
corner when his shot was deflected wide. Rangers won several corners
during a fast paced opening to the game. Damien Stewart saw his
header from a Buzsacky corner deflect wide of the post before
good work from Agyemang out wide created a half chance for Stewart
which he couldn’t get a foot to it.
The visitors had the ball
in the back of the net after five minutes but the whistle had
already gone for offside and it proved to be a rare attack for
Bristol City during the first half. Rangers looked to get Rowlands
on the ball as often as they could and we worked the ball into
some good areas on the left with Ephraim and Delaney working well
together.
Akos Buzsacky was drifting in from the right into the middle and
he had a shot from the edge of the box which was comfortably saved
by the keeper.
Our main threat was Agyemang who was bullying the life out of
the two central defenders and they couldn’t deal with his pace
and eagerness to win the ball. When Rangers took a deserved lead
after eighteen minutes it was no surprise that Agyemang was the
man to break the deadlock.
Rowan Vine drifted out to the right and played a ball in behind
the the defenders for Agyemang to run onto and the in form striker
sped clear of the defence and placed a powerful shot into the
bottom corner. Such was the confidence Agyemang has at the moment
it looked a goal as soon as it left his foot. That was his fourth
goal in as many starts for Rangers which is as many goals as he
scored all season at Preston.
Rangers almost went 2-0 up when Rowan Vine ran at the heart of
the Bristol City defence again and after a lucky break he hit
a shot past the keeper and just wide of the post.
The referee had very little to do but made a strange decision
when he waved play on after Camp was flattened in his six yard
box and with the goalkeeper down with a head injury the game continued
much to the disgust of the QPR fans. I thought a head injury meant
an immediate stop to the game but that was the only real moan
about the referee who had a decent game.
Rangers got a killer second goal before half time and it was that
man Agyemang again. The goal came after Rowlands battled into
the box and scrambled the ball to Agyemang who held off his man
and laid it to the right for Buzsacky to find space and shot across
the keeper where Agyemang was on hand to tap it into the empty
net.
It was all Rangers and we were playing some really nice football.
Michael Mancienne was showing some nice skill on the ball with
one drag back and dummy leaving a City player rooted to his spot
and the fans up on their feet applauding him. In the middle Rowlands
was excellent closing down and using the ball very well as he
makes that central midfield position his own.
At half time rangers thoroughly deserved the two goal lead and
the only fear was that we might sit back on it and cause ourselves
problems. That never really happened though as we looked for a
third goal. Agyemang was looking for his hat trick and used his
power and pace to get away from his marker but couldn’t get a
shot on target.
We were playing some good stuff and dominating the game as City’s
only real chance came when a cross to the far post was fired horribly
wide by McCombe.
The third and final goal of
the game was probably the best of them as Akos Buzsacky hit another
goal of the season contender. He got the ball on the right and
cut inside playing the ball into Agyemang. The big striker held
it up well with his back to goal and laid it back to Buzsacky
to delicately volley the ball into the back of the net giving
the keeper no chance. It was another brilliant goal from the Hungarian
and he is now Rangers top goal scorer with seven goals from midfield.
After the third goal Bristol City began to create a few chances
but the game was well and truly over. Lee Camp made one excellent
save from a Adebola header and the man who sounds like some sort
of unpleasant disease then beat Camp but saw his effort hit the
inside of the post before he fired the rebound straight at Lee
Camp.
Rangers then made a couple of changes with the impressive Zesh
Rehmann making way for Matthew Connolly whilst Kieran Lee came
on for Hogan Ephraim. Mikele Leigterwood also came on for Rowan
vine towards the end as Rangers comfortably saw out the final
ten minutes without too many problems.
The players thoroughly deserved the ovation that got at the final
whistle. This wasn’t a struggling side we were against but a team
just one win off the top of the league and we absolutely slaughtered
them. The 3-0 scoreline doesn’t do justice for how comfortable
Rangers were and a little more ambition in the last fifteen minutes
would have seen us score a few more.
It was hard to fault anyone as they all played well. The idiots
who booed Rehmann were made to look stupid as he was excellent
as were the rest of the back four. Delaney was back to being more
than OK and Mancienne was very good on the right.
Rowlands was my man of the match, I thought he ran the game in
midfield and his partnership with Mahon is very promising and
our best option at the moment. Hogan and Buzsacky did well out
wide without ever producing their best. Buzsackys goal though
was superb and Vine was outstanding up front as was Agyemang,
so much for us needing a goalscorer, five goals in four games
and his all round game yesterday was brilliant.
That was a massive result yesterday, to thrash Bristol City in
the way we did is so impressive. Now if we can produce this kind
of football on the road we'll quickly end any relegation worries
and push ourselves up to mid table.
