With championship survival ensured last week there was nothing but pride to play for against promotion chasing Wolves yesterday. On the way to the game I don't think many of us fancied our chances against a side that simply had to win and when we saw the teams it was clear that Rangers were going to struggle.
Gregory was without
the services of Lee Camp, Mancienne, Cullip,
Cook, Blackstock and Ainsworth leaving us severely
weakened against a very strong Wolves team.
Jake Cole came in for his first league start
since Boxing Day 2005 whilst Mauro Milanese
made a rare start at left back. Jimmy Smith
started on the left wing with Furlong and Nygaard
the forward line.
Wolves started the better of the two sides backed
by unbelievable support which was deafening
at times and laughable at others as ten year
old kids were spending much of the half screaming
abuse at us and making throat slitting signs
to us. You'd think the parents would be embarrassed
by thins but they were joining in as well, a
real father and son bonding session. Watching
the antics of some of their idiots was more
entertaining than the match early on as Wolves
dominated possession but didn't really threaten
Jake Cole.
Cole was having a decent start punching corners
and long throws away and looking quite confident.
His first save came after a poor back pass from
Kanyuka saw Cole need to sprint out and he just
did enough to slide in and win the ball against
the on rushing Keogh.
At the other end we began to work the ball into
some decent positions but without the Cook the
final ball was poor and Matt Murray was having
some end of season catching practice.
Wolves continued to look the better side but
I honestly can't remember Cole having a save
to make in a pretty dull first half. Keogh and
Mcindoe both had weak shots fly wide of the
post but for all their possession and the backing
of the loudest home support I've heard this
season they didn't really look like scoring.
Rangers began to grow in confidence and with
Furlong beginning to get on the ball we had
a flurry of pressure, which almost brought the
opening goal. A ball from the right by Rowlands
was half cleared to Milanese and his thunderous
effort was heading into the top corner before
smashing Craddock in the face and going off
for a corner.
Jimmy Smith had the best chance of the half
just before half time. Rowlands ball into the
box missed everyone and fell to Jimmy Smith
in space at the far post, his first touch was
a poor one though and allowed Murray to rush
out to save at Smiths feet when the youngster
really should have scored. It would have been
a little harsh for us to go in front though
and at the break the 0-0 score line was probably
a fair reflection.
Rangers began the second half on the front foot
and went very close to getting the lead within
a few minutes. Smith won a free kick which saw
Kanyuka go up for it but it was played short
Bignot, it looked like we'd wasted it as his
pass fell to Smith with his back to goal but
he turned brilliantly to beat his man and shot
past Murray but against the bar, the rebound
fell to Rowlands with an open goal but he couldn't
get the header on target. It was a great chance
and it certainly woke the home side up who went
on to dominate the next fifteen minutes.
We were struggling to get out of our own half
and the pressure on the back four was intense.
It seemed a case of when rather than if they'd
open the scoring, The movement of Keogh was
causing all sorts of problems and he beat the
offside trap to put Kightley through one on
one with Cole, he passed it to Mcindoe who had
an open goal but managed to put it wide with
an incredible miss.
Bothroyd and Keogh both had half chances to
break the deadlock before the goal finally came.
The goal came from a free kick. Bothroyd fired
a shot in which Cole did well to punch away
to safety, it fell to a Wolves player on the
right who picked out the unmarked Keogh at the
far post buy Cole made a magnificent save to
palm it off the line, the rebound fell to Keogh
and Cole just couldn't get out of the net in
time to save this one and the young striker
smashed it into the back of the net to send
the home fans into wild celebrations.
It was a real shame
for Jake Cole who had played so well and I'm
sure he'll be asking questions of his back four
who seemed to disappear at the far post. An
injury to Kanyuka saw him limp off to be replaced
by Timoska and we were soon two goals behind.
Cole had earlier denied Kightley with a good
save but the former Grays striker soon got the
goal he deserved after poor defending by Rangers.
A pass from the left split the Rangers defence
open with Stewart failing to react and left
Kightly to run through and lift it over Cole
who was a little slow to react and the game
was over.
That was it now and Wolves relaxed and didn't
really look like extending the lead after this
as we began to push forward but didn't really
look like scoring. Ray Jones and Stefan Bailey
came on and Jones went close when his over head
kick landed on the roof of the net whilst Rowlands
only real contribution of the second half was
to curl a weak shot straight at the keeper.
Marc Nygaard got into a bit of handbags with
Gary Breen, which seemed to upset the Wolves
players and saw Nygaard booked. At the end it
was a deserved win for Wolves and the Rangers
players were given a decent ovation from the
travelling fans who had been singing "We don't
care cos we're staying up" for much of the second
half.
That seemed
to be the attitude of most of the game and the
mood was lifted by the news that Chelsea have
blown a great chance to win the league and Leeds
had gone down, for much of the season I thought
anyone but us to go down but to see Leeds go
is very amusing. Shame about Southend though
who also went down and I don't think they were
as bad as their final position suggests.
Still this will have been an interesting afternoon
for John Gregory. If the manager is serious
about having a crack at the playoffs next season
he'll have seen what is required. The gap between
the two sides was huge at times and we'll need
to improve if we are going to do anything next
season. Saying that though anytime we are missing
Blackstock and Cook we tend to struggle and
with the team having nothing to play for this
had home win written all over it.
Credit to Jake Cole and the back four for their
performances. Cole was outstanding just as he
had been in his last league start at Brighton
last season and looks a promising keeper. Jimmy
Smith also did well and looked sharper than
he has for several months. The performance of
Rowlands was a worry though as he was very poor
throughout whilst the front two offered very
little threat. We should find out this week
which of the out of contract players will be
kept on, personally Bignot and Furlong would
be the only two I'd keep but it will be interesting
to see what Gregory does.
Lets just hope the players can give it one last
push next week to end Stoke's hopes of promotion
which will be a very satisfying way to end the
season.
