A
first win of pre season
for Rangers as the team
looks impressive against
non league Stevenage Boro.
Gary Waddock again left
out many of the senior
players for this game
with Milanese, Furlong,
Cook and Nygaard all sitting
this one out to give a
chance to some of the
youngsters and a few of
the players who sat out
most of last season injured.
Paul Jones started in
goal with Damion Stewart
making his debut in front
him alongside Bignot and
youngsters Andrew Howell
and Pat Kanyuka. There
was a welcome return for
Martin Rowlands in central
midfield who was joined
in midfield by Ainsworth,
Oliseh and Scott Donnelly.
New signing Adam Czerkas
partnered Kevin Gallen
up front.
Rangers started brightly
with Rowland’s going close
from a free kick whilst
Scott Donnelly was looking
impressive on the left
wing. Rangers grabbed
the lead with a stunning
strike from Ainsworth.
The Rangers winger miss
controlled the ball but
it bounced nicely for
a volley and Ainsworth
smashed the ball past
the keeper from 35 yards
out to score a goal as
good as his effort against
Rushden and Diamonds three
years ago.
Stevenage are no mugs
though and are one of
the favourites for promotion
this year so against an
inexperienced defence
is was no surprise to
see them hit back. Howell
and Kanuyka got in a mess
trying to play offside
and Dobson took advantage
to level the scores.
Rangers had that extra
little bit of class though
and re took the lead thanks
to Scott Donnelly. The
highly rated youngster
showed what he is capable
of but turning his full
back one way then the
other before curling a
beautiful shot into the
top corner.
Before half time a first
injury of pre season for
Rangers as new signing
Oliseh limped off to be
replaced by Stefan Bailey
In the second half new
signing Czerkas went close
with a header before former
QPR striker Tony Thorpe
had a goal disallowed
for offside.
Rangers made the game
safe with a third goal
as Rowlands whipped in
a lovely free kick for
Kevin Gallen to head past
the keeper for his first
goal since last October.
Gary Waddock then made
four changes and Paul
Jones, Stewart, Rowlands
and Czerkas all came off
to be replaced by Cole,
Rose, Ray Jones and Baidoo.
The change saw Gallen
move into midfield to
make way for last seasons
under 18’s forward line
and the kids did alright
with Jones and Baidoo
both having chances to
get their names on the
score sheet as Baidoo
hit the bar and Jones
shot just over.
At the other end Tony
Thorpe hit the woodwork
and looked like a player
capable of doing some
damage for Stevenage this
season which is good to
see after all his injury
problems over the last
few years.
Kevin Gallen wrapped up
the scoring with his second
of the game after good
work by Baidoo. Rangers
had chances to add to
the four goals but ended
satisfied with a 4-1 win.
This was a good nights
work from Rangers and
Gary Waddock will be pleased
with what he saw giving
him a number of options
ahead of the new season.
Rangers now travel to
Gillingham on Saturday
where Milanese, Furlong
and Nick Ward are all
expected to be involved
but one player who won’t
be is Dan Shittu who looks
set to leave the club
in the next few weeks.
