Games
between QPR and Norwich usually
provide good entertainment
and this one was certainly
no exception. Over the years
there have been more than
a few games between the sides
that has ended 3-2 and this
game looked set to follow
that pattern until the dying
seconds of the game.
The afternoon started with
much expectation from both
sets of fans. Rangers were
looking for a third win in
a row after an impressive
start to John Gregory's reign
as manager whilst Norwich
fans were now happy with the
announcement that Peter Grant
is going to become the clubs
manager next week A new era
for both clubs and as ever
when new managers come in
the players from both sides
found an extra 20% to produce
a wonderful afternoon of entertainment.
John Gregory made just two
changes to the side that beat
Southampton two weeks ago.
The collapse of Richard Duffys
loan move means that Steve
Lomas came in to start at
right back with Bignot moving
to the left and Matthew Rose
was on the bench. Jimmy Smith
made his full debut in place
of Stefan Bailey in central
midfield.
Rangers started the game similar
to the way we did at Southampton,
which was not good news. The
players looked a little shy
of confidence and Norwich
were taking full advantage.
They
were a very different side
to the one thrashed by Burnley
two weeks ago, as they were
quick into the tackle and
looking to attack us at every
opportunity.
It took just three minutes
for the visitors to gain the
lead and shock the biggest
crowd of the season at Loftus
Road.
It
was a neat passing move which
ended with Croft slipping
a ball between the two central
defenders and we were far
to static as Huckerby ran
through and found himself
clean through and had the
time to pick his spot and
place the ball past Jones
for the opening goal. The
Rangers keeper had no chance
and had been left hopelessly
exposed by his back four.
The early goal set the tempo
for the game and Rangers came
straight back looking for
an equaliser and a chance
came to Smith but his effort
lacked the power to test the
keeper. Rangers were struggling
to keep hold of the ball in
midfield with Bircham giving
it away far too easily and
on the left Cook wasn't at
his best early on. The back
four were also struggling
and gifted Norwich a few chances
to kill the game off early.
The Rangers fans had a new
target to boo when lee Croft
threw himself to the floor
to try and win a penalty.
It was a pathetic dive that
should have seen him booked
and he spent the rest of the
game as the pantomime villain
with his every touch booed.
Huckerby
was causing problems for us
and was getting the better
of Lomas and he created the
best chance of the half for
Norwich.
For
some reason he was booed by
the Q Block when he took a
corner, which was a poor one,
but he got a second chance
and whipped in a brilliant
cross. Earnshaw was unmarked
and met the cross with a bullet
header which had goal written
all over it but Paul Jones
got across and made a superb
save. It must have done wonders
for Jones confidence who got
a fair bit of stick after
the Wales game last week but
he was once again proving
he is still an excellent keeper.
The save seemed to wake Rangers
up and we began to get back
in the game. Bircham was now
winning his tackles and keeping
possession whilst Cook and
Rowlands were getting more
of the ball and causing havoc
out wide.
Cook
was displaying all of his
tricks and was linking really
well with Jimmy Smith. Cook
went close to scoring with
an effort from the edge of
the box but it was more encouraging
from Rangers and we were soon
back on level terms.
Once
again it was Lee Cook who
created the goal who was now
on top form after a disappointing
start to the game.
He got the ball on the left and some good movement off the ball by Blackstock and Jones opened up a gap, Cook played a simple pass to Jimmy Smith and the on loan player exploited the gap made by the to forwards and placed a shot into the bottom corner.
It
was very Frank Lampard style
finish and the youngster looked
thrilled to get off the mark
and celebrated with his new
team mates.
Rangers were buoyant now and
should have gone ahead with
two chances.
First
Ray Jones got onto a Rowlands
cross and smashed a shot against
the bar, Jones perhaps should
have scored but it was good
to see him again finding space
in the box and getting a chance.
Dexter Blackstock was next
to go close from a Cook corner,
which he met on the volley
but was just over the bar.
At the other end Zesh Rehmann
was booked for a poor challenge
on Earnshaw.
He
was a little unlucky though
as the linesmen had flagged
for offside before the foul
and the Rangers fans were
fuming at the linsesmen who
put his flag down rather than
alert the ref of the offside
decision. It would have been
typical Rangers if they had
scored from the free kick
but thankfully Earnshaw's
effort was wide of the post.
With the half almost at an
end there was just enough
time for Rangers to take the
lead. Blackstock was brought
down on the edge of the box
for a free kick and we had
plenty of options to take
it. Cook looked keen but Rowlands
took control and looked to
repeat his goal against Southend.
This
one was a lot closer but it
was the same result. Bircham
knocked it to Rowlands and
he connected with a powerful
shot, which gave the keeper
no chance and went in like
a bullet to the top corner.
Rowlands ran to the fans and
celebrated his third goal
of the season and the half
time whistle just seconds
later meant we were on course
for another three points.
That goal had knocked the
stuffing out of Norwich and
they started the second half
looking a beaten side. Rangers
were well on top as the second
half began and were playing
some lovely football. The
midfield were linking really
well with Smith showing why
he is so highly rated at Chelsea.
He was quick, got forward
and was full of energy. He
looks an excellent prospect
and hopefully we can keep
him for the rest of the season.
He
wasn't the only one impressing,
on the right Rowlands was
in outstanding form and was
back to the kind of performance
that used to light up Loftus
Road in our promotion year.
He got the ball on the right
and ran at his full back before
hitting a low shot, which
was well saved by the keeper.
Rowlands repeated the trick
later in the half twisting
his full back inside out but
on the second occasion he
shot just wide. Cook was flying
down the left whilst the front
two were working their socks
off to create openings.
Rangers
were denied a penalty when
Smith hit a shot from the
edge of the box which was
pushed away by a defender,
ball to hand said the ref
and decision was made more
frustrating when at the other
end Smith blocked a shot from
a yard away with his hand
and was booked for handball.
Lee Croft had the Rangers
fans cheering by missing an
absolute sitter. Huckerby
cut in on the left and found
an unmarked Croft with a ball
into the box, which Paul Jones
had missed. Croft had an open
goal but managed to put it
wide. Perhaps it was justice
for his laughable dive in
the first half.
Earnshaw was next to go close
as Norwich began to come back
into the game. A Long ball
forward found the Welshman
and his excellent shot was
met with another brilliant
save by Paul Jones.
It was end-to-end stuff and
all very entreating. The next
goal was going to be vital
and both sides had chances
to get it. Rangers were still
on top though and Ray Jones
went close to killing the
game off.
Cook
delivered the ball into the
box and Jones rose well and
beat the keeper to the ball
heading towards the back of
the net and with most of the
stadium already celebrating
Colin did well to head it
clear from on the line. Jones
was left in a heap as the
keeper ended up standing on
his head and despite calls
for the keeper to be sent
off the ref did nothing.
Jones
was down again soon after
with another bang to the head
and it was no surprise when
he was eventually taken off
after taking one knock too
many and he was given a standing
ovation from the Rangers fans.
Kevin Gallen came on but it
was a Norwich substitute who
turned the game on it's head.
Dion Dublin came on and scored
the equaliser within a few
minutes.
Blackstock gave the ball away
and Norwich broke quickly
and finished off a nice passing
move. Earnshaw broke down
the right and pulled it back
for the unmarked Dublin to
calmly slot past the keeper
despite the efforts of Rehmann
and Stewart to throw themselves
at the ball in an attempt
to block the shot.
It was a real kick in the
teeth for Rangers who had
been well in control but the
game now looked like ending
in a draw. Neither side was
happy with that though and
the last ten minutes saw both
sides throw everything at
getting a winner.
The golden chance came to
Norwich though after some
awful defending. A long ball
down the line saw Huckerby
chase it but Rehmann had it
under control and just needed
to boot it out for a corner.
Instead he tried to let the
ball roll out and Huckerby
nicked it off him and Rehmann
decided to just pull his shirt
and give the penalty away.
It was pretty blatant and
not very often you don't hear
fans appeal against a penalty,
which goes against us, but
this one was clear-cut.
So a chance for Paul Jones
to put a miserable week behind
him by being the hero but
that wasn't to be as Earnshaw's
effort just squeezed past
Jones hand and gave his side
the lead. Earnshaw always
seems to score against us
and it looked like being the
winner.
Rangers
never gave up though and as
the board went up to say five
minutes of injury time we
drew level again. Once again
it was Rowlands who got the
goal. He was again a threat
on the right and was found
by Bircham.
Rowlands
played a low ball into Gallen
and the Rangers striker played
it back to Rowlands who hit
it first time to the near
post and the keeper looked
as surprised as the rest of
us when he didn't get a hand
to it and we were level again.
That wasn't the end of it
as Rose replaced the injured
Lomas and both sides looked
for a winner. Earnshaw curled
another free kick wide before
the ref brought to an end
a thoroughly enjoyable afternoons
football.
I really enjoyed the game,
end-to-end stuff and although
we should have won the game
I wasn't too down after the
game as it had been such an
exciting game.
Dion Dublin coming on changed
the game as our defence looked
frightened of him and it was
no real surprise when he scored.
Gallen
came on for Jones who must
have been down at least 6
times during the game with
head injuries, the last of
them coming when the keeper
stood on his head and got
away with it. Gallen almost
made a goal when he came on
but we sat back a little too
deep after the change and
almost threw the game away.
Awful defending by Rehmann
for the penalty and Jones
almost saved it. It was harsh
on him to concede three goals
as he had a decent game.
I thought that was it but
the players showed great spirit
to come back and great the
draw, Rowlands deserved the
goal, he looked back to his
best in the second half.
Even during injury time both
sides tried to win the game
rather than settle for the
point and I think in the end
neither side deserved to lose
that game.
It was hard to pick out a
man of the match as so many
players did well. Lomas and
Bignot did well at full back
but it was the midfield who
stole the show. Smith looked
a very exciting player, Bircham
was excellent after a poor
start whilst Cook is a joy
to watch when he plays like
this. I gave the honours to
Rowlands though who looked
back to his very best in the
second half.
That was a game we would have
lost under Waddock but credit
to Gregory who has got the
spirit back where we never
give up and the turnaround
has been incredible since
he took over. The defence
still needs plenty of work
but if we keep on attacking
sides like this we'll have
no problems staying up.
