Ranger's
fourth game in just eight days
brought another memorable afternoon
for QPR fans. Luton Town were
the visitors bringing the most
pathetic away support I've seen
all season with less than 1,000
making the short trip to Loftus
Road and most of them seemed
more interested in a fight than
the football.
The atmosphere was pretty buoyant
among the QPR fans before the
game although I have to admittedly
to being a tad nervous about
this game given the fact that
Luton have been woeful for months
now it would be typical if they
turned up and beat us just as
we looked to be pulling away
from danger.
John Gregory once again rotated
his squad for the game. Nygaard
and Furlong swapped again with
Furs sitting on the bench for
this one whilst Steve Lomas
replaced Smith in midfield and
Bignot returned in place of
Timoska at left back. Once again
lee Cook was missing through
injury so Stefan Moore made
his first start at Loftus Road
since March 2006.
Rangers kicked off and my fears
were quickly realised as Rangers
looked tired and a little nervous
and it was Luton who bossed
the game from the first minute.
They controlled the ball and
we were chasing shadows early
on struggling to get a touch.
Matthew Spring's shot was deflected
wide of Camps goal early on
and from the corner Heikkinen
was unmarked but headed wide
of the post.
Rangers were rarely making inroads
into the Luton half and our
only real attacking threat was
Stefan Moore who looked bright
on the left but his first effort
on goal was a weak one and was
easily saved.
The referee was soon called
into action but appeared to
be one of two people in the
stadium to miss a late foul
on Camp. Camp was seeing the
ball out and Talbot got in a
lade nasty tackle on Camp but
the ref missed it and gave a
throw on and after asking his
linesmen who was on the other
side of the pitch it transpired
he didn't see it either so Luton
attacked from the throw in after
Camp received several minutes
of treatment.
Another more serious injury
followed when Ainsworth sadly
broke his leg. As ever Ainsworth
through himself into a challenge
after Camp's long ball, he jumped
high and into the Luton defender
and laded awkwardly. Typical
Ainsworth he tried to walk off
the broken leg and tried to
play on but it was clear something
was badly wrong and he limped
off and will miss the rest of
the season. This left Rangers
with no wingers on the pitch
as Smith slotted in on the right.
The pattern of the game didn't
change too much though as Luton
dominated proceedings and ad
a goal disallowed for offside
which looked a correct decision.
Stefan Moore went on a great
run down the left and cut it
back for Lomas but his completely
missed the ball with his air
shot and the chance was gone.
Just as most fans were heading
for the bar after a tedious
first half Rangers took the
lead with our first real chance
of the game. Steve Lomas took
a long throw on the right and
the ball fell to Moore who knocked
it back across for Stewart to
knock down and Blackstock placed
a powerful shot into the bottom
corner for his twelfth goal
of the season. It was against
the run of play but nobody seemed
to care as for the third game
in a row we got the all important
first goal which will have pleased
John Gregory as Rangers have
not lost after opening the scoring
since January 13th.
The lead didn't last long though
as Luton got the equaliser they
deserved. A throw in on the
right brought the goal as Rangers
went to sleep. First Bignot
allowed Bell space to cut inside
and get a cross in where Coyne
was unmarked and able to head
past Camp from close range.
A poor goal to give away but
it had been coming and Rangers
went in at half time more than
a little fortunate to still
be in the game.
The second half started just
as poorly for Rangers and we
were quickly 2-1 down. The referee
didn't help after waving play
on after a Luton defender almost
took Jimmy Smiths head off with
what looked like a wrestling
move and they went straight
up the other end and scored.
A ball into the box appeared
to cause little danger until
Nygaard had a rush of blood
and punched the ball away to
concede the most blatant penalty
of the season.
Dave Bell stepped up to take
it and sent Camp the wrong way
to cause mass panic among the
QPR fans that all the recent
hard work was about to be undone.
It almost got far worse when
Talbot broke through again but
was denied by Camp. A flurry
of substitutions followed as
the unlucky Pat Kanyuka limped
off with another injury to give
Timoska a chance at right back
whilst Nygaard was replaced
by Furlong.
The game was going nowhere though
and Rangers never looked like
getting back into it until Luton
brought on former QPR favourite
Richard Langley. The reception
he got was quite amazing, I
don't think I've heard an ex
player booed so much since Andy
Sinton in the 1990's. It felt
a bit unconformable as I always
liked Langley and couldn't really
work out why he was getting
so much stick. Langley didn't
do himself any favours though
with a performance that can
only be likened to that of a
pantomime villain.
After throwing himself to the
floor under the slightest touch
from Moore he was sent flying
by Timoska and the crowd were
now going berserk at him. He
seemed to not only fire the
fans up but also Rangers and
we were soon on top.
Up front Furlong was changing
hr game by holding the ball
up and getting the midfield
into the game, He had a good
shout for a penalty when he
was taken down in the box but
the referee wouldn't give it.
Soon after he did give one though
as a good ball into the box
from Bolder saw Furlong wrestled
to the floor for a clear penalty
despite what that tosser Kevin
Blackwell said after the game.
Dexter Blackstock went to take
the penalty before Langley lost
the plot first fighting with
Bignot then standing right next
to Blackstock and mouthing off
something in his ear. As a big
fan of Langley when he was at
Rangers even I was disappointed
by the way he was acting and
the boos and chants aimed at
him now were richly deserved.
Blackstock ignored all the gamesmanship
by Langley and as the whistle
blew he calmly ran up and placed
the ball into the back of the
net sending the keeper the wrong
way. The crowd went mad and
the game had turned on it's
head. Luton fell apart and Rangers
stormed forward looking for
a winner with Gregory almost
on the pitch at one stage urging
the team on.
In the 90th minute the moment
came and as has often been the
case in the last few years it
was the brilliant Paul Furlong
who came up with the winner.
When Rangers have needed a goal
to make a playoff final or win
promotion in recent years it's
been Furlong who got them and
here he was again being the
hero.
The goal came after a nice pass
from Moore found Lomas out on
the left and he picked out a
perfect cross for Furlong who
was unmarked and placed a diving
header into the bottom corner.
The celebrations were unreal
as the fans went potty and the
players, plus manager, coaches
and subs all jumped up and down
as if we had just won the league.
Furlongs name was sung with
great gusto around the stadium
as Luton launched one last attack
but the free kick was wasted
and the final whistle saw players
and fans rejoice at another
massive three points. The celebrations
suggested we are now safe and
although that is not quite the
case just yet we are just one
win away from securing our place
in the division probably three
games earlier than anyone expected.
It's been quite a week for QPR
with three massive wins and
to win again without Cook and
Rowlands speaks volumes for
the team spirit and determination
this team now have. This wasn't
a good performance by any means,
the first half was the worse
we have played at home in 2007
but we stayed in the game and
thanks to Blackstock and Furlong
were able to turn defeat into
victory.
Richard Langley played a big
part in the win, his performance
woke the crowd and our team
up and quite what was going
through his mind is anyone's
guess. I don't think I've ever
seen a player self-destruct
in that way for a long time.
A shame really as he was a good
player for us but all the memories
of great goals and performances
will now be replaced by him
trying to fight Bignot and put
Blackstock off before he took
the penalty.
Once again the back four all
played well with Cullip leading
them well. The midfield were
pretty poor in all honestly
but credit to Moore who has
come from nowhere to get back
in the team and he worked very
hard in an unfamiliar role.
Up front Nygaard was poor but
Furlong was outstanding when
he came on changing the game
in our favour and getting the
winner. Blackstock again impressed
and is starting to get the goals
his all round play deserves.
Rangers are now seven points
clear of the bottom three with
just four games to play. One
more win will do it and if we
can get Cook, Mancienne and
Rowlands back fit for next week
then there is no reason why
we can't get that win at Sunderland.
