After
suffering back-to-back defeats
John Gregory made a few chances
for the visit of Leicester City
to Loftus Road as some of the
walking wounded returned to the
first team.
Simon Royce made his first start since we last played Leicester in January and it was good to see him back after such a long time out injured.
Pat
Kanyuka returned to make his first
start at Loftus Road as Zesh Rehmann
moved to right back. Injuries
to Ray Jones and Marc Bircham
saw further changes as Lomas was
given the captains armband and
moved into midfield and Marc Nygaard
returned to partner Dexter Blackstock
up front.
Rangers needed a good start after
conceding early goals in the last
four games and it was almost a
perfect start after just two minutes.
Lee Cook weaved his magic on the left and delivered a cross to Blackstock and the in form striker met the cross on the volley and smashed it just over the bar.
It
was so close the tannoy bloke
thought it was a goal and played
pig bag much to everyone's confusion
as goal flashed up on the scoreboard.
Any late comers walking down South
Africa Road at that point must
have thought we were 1-0 up and
by the time they got to their
seats we were a goal behind.
Rangers
conceded a needless free kick
on the right and our woeful defending
continued to gift the visitors
a goal. Danny Tiatto whipped an
excellent ball into the box, which
we didn't deal with, Stewart lost
his man and Kisnorbo had a free
header from a few yards out to
head past Royce.
The
Rangers keeper could have done
better and claimed the ball but
after so long out it was no surprise
that Royce was a little rusty
early on.
So once again we had to chase
the game and it was an all to
familiar story for much of the
first half as we pushed forward
leaving gaps in behind us that
Leicester really should have made
more of.
Going forward all of our attacks
were coming from Lee Cook. Cookie
is on top form at the moment and
is unrecognisable from the winger
who last year spent most of the
games slipping and falling on
his arse. Now every time he gets
the ball a buzz goes around the
stadium and something happens.
He
is the best dribbler we've had
since Trevor Sinclair left and
when he runs with the ball at
his feet you can see the panic
in opposition defences. Cook created
all of our chances in the first
half.
A curling free kick on the right
was headed wide by Stewart whilst
another ball into the box caused
a goalmouth scramble with the
ball falling to Blackstock who
put his chance over the bar. Cook
then curled a free kick over the
wall which was blocked but the
ball fell to Stewart who looked
a certainty to score but his effort
was brilliantly turned round the
post by the keeper.
Blackstock
had two more chances to draw us
level but was denied by the keeper.
It wasn't all one-way traffic
though as the visitors cut us
apart with ease. The back four
were looking a shambles and a
return to zonal marking at corners
was again causing problems. At
every set piece we had four players
stood on the edge of the six yard
box whilst all the Leicester players
stood unmarked at the edge of
the box. We were very fortunate
that the delivery from the set
pieces were not particularly good
as they were lining up to score
every time.
At Kanyuka had looked a little
out of sorts and it was son clear
why as he signalled to the bench
that his hamstring had gone again.
Ian Hume got away from big Pat
and went close as Royce pulled
off a good save. Kanyuka was taken
off as Michael Mancienne came
on with Rehmann moving to the
middle.
The
groans around the stadium said
it all and the nightmare combination
of Rehmann and Stewart was back
and not really looking much better
as Leicester got behind the back
four on several occasions but
couldn't finish off some good
approach play and kill the game
off.
As the half petered out some fans
in the Q block registered their
anger at the Loft for not joining
in the singing. Around four fans
in the Q Block were hurling plenty
of abuse at the fans who were
not joining in the songs about
interbred northerners (whatever
that means) and songs about hating
Chelsea.
I
really don't understand what those
in the Q Block were trying to
achieve by screaming abuse at
other QPR fans. With much of the
crowd now taken up by kids with
free season tickets it's no wonder
that the atmosphere has been affected
but I've always thought that the
atmosphere only ever gets going
when we are attacking the Loft
end and as usual the second half
saw an increase in the noise levels
from the QPR fans.
At half time things looked bleak
for Rangers as it was looking
like one of those days where nothing
would go in for us and we always
looked like conceding another
one at the back.
Gregory
made no changes at half time but
it seemed only a matter of time
before Nygaard was replaced. The
Big Dane does offer a goal threat
but for much of the game he was
anonymous and the calls for Gallen
to come on started early in the
second half.
As Rangers kicked off and attacked
the Loft end it was Cook again
causing problems. He dribbled
past three players before being
hacked down by Tiatto.
Rowlands
fired the free kick over the bar
but there was a bit more purpose
about Rangers and Rowlands was
coming to life as he lobbed the
keeper from right on the touchline
but no Rangers player could get
on the end of it as it was cleared
off the line.
John
Gregory was urging the team on
from the sidelines and he was
almost celebrating as Mancienne
ran forward from right back and
used his strength and pace to
get past three challenges before
seeing his shot well saved by
the keeper.
Rowlands went close again as the
ball was half cleared to him and
he smashed in a shot from the
edge of the box which beat the
keeper but came back off the post.
It was so close and Leicester
now were happy to have everyone
behind the ball and hang on.
The hopeless Nygaard was eventually
replaced on 57 minutes with Gallen
coming on but the club captain
made little difference and looked
a million miles from the player
we know he can be, that was still
an improvement on Nygaard though.
Rangers got the goal we deserved
thanks to some crazy defending.
Blackstocks shot was going into
the bottom corner before it appeared
to be headed off the line from
where I was sitting.
A
penalty was given though and after
seeing it on TV this morning it
was a clear handball on the line
and McAuley was sent off. Red
cards seem to always happen in
this ficture, this was the fifth
red card in the last six games
between the two sides.
Martin Rowlands grabbed the ball
and after a delay of a minute
or so he was able to take his
spot kick. Rowlands ran up, stopped
did a shimmy which sent the keeper
the wrong way and he rolled the
ball into the bottom corner. A
very good penalty and a goal Rowlands
performance had deserved.
It
was now a great chance for us
to take control and kill the game
off but we appeared to sit back
a little rather than go for the
jugular.
Blackstock
had a great chance to win the
game as Cook again produced a
wonderful cross and Blackstock's
point blank header from six yards
out was straight at the keeper
who did well to hold onto it.
An inch either side of the keeper
and we'd have won the game.
Gareth Ainsworth then came on
for Rowlands but like Gallen he
made no real impact and looked
nowhere near match fit.
With Leicester putting everyone
behind the ball they were proving
difficult to break down but with
our defence we still managed to
give them a chance to win the
game.
Rehmann
tried to be clever with a clearance
and take a touch rather than welly
it clear and he was made to pay
as Hume said thanks very much
and nicked the ball off him, Royce
blocked his shot but the rebound
fell to Matt Fryatt who had a
simple tap in but somehow managed
to pass it back to Royce. An unbelievable
let off for Rangers and yet more
evidence of the work that needs
to be done on the defensive side
of our game.
With four minutes of injury time
signalled we threw a last attack
at the visitors but with so many
men behind the ball we found it
hard to create space and ended
up just passing along the half
way line and that last chance
to win the game was gone and we
had to settle for a point.
This was a disappointing result
with a mixed performance. Going
forwards again we looked bright
and capable of scoring but it
looked like being one of those
days until we got the penalty.
At the back though we really are
a shambles and although Stewarts
performance improved as the game
wore on we always looked like
conceding a second goal and only
an incredible miss by Fryatt prevented
a third defeat in a row.
I thought Mancienne looked a decent
player and Cook again was a different
class. Blackstock had a decent
game up front and I thought Stewart
got better as the game wore on
also good to see Royce back. Hopefully
the loan of Jimmy Smith can be
extended as he continues to look
a decent player. When Waddock
was in charge I couldn't see where
the next win was coming from but
Gregory seems to have installed
a bit more belief in the side
and we at least have a chance
to stay up now.
On the downside Nygaard is just
rubbish and I give up on Rehmann.
Gallen and Ainsworth also looked
nowhere near fit when they came
on. Gallen is becoming a bit of
a worry now as he's come on in
the last few games and done very
little. He was still an improvement
on Nygaard though. I guess he
just needs games after a long
layoff but if he doesn't improve
soon I think he might be off next
summer.
We really should have won the
game but we're not really giving
ourselves much of a chance by
having chase every game due to
giving away early goals. I'm getting
fed up of saying the defence has
to improve but if it doesn't then
the upcoming trips to West Brom,
Cardiff and Luton could be very
embarrassing. It's West Brom next
for Rangers which won't be easy
but hopefully they'll take us
lightly and we'll cause an upset.
