The first home game of the season
is always highly anticipated by
QPR fans and with Leeds United
the visitors last night game was
all set up to be an exciting one.
With the crowd making plenty of
noise it was a little disappointing
to see the side was unchanged
from Burnley, meaning only one
up front again.
As the teams came out Rangers did a strange warming up routine where they all ran in straight lines by the corner flag, not idea what all that was about but it worked though as we started the game brilliantly in an explosive first 15 minutes.
We came
out looking to attack from the
off with Cook, Ainsworth and Ward
running at Leeds from midfield
and Czerkas was working hard on
his own up front.
Lee Cook had an early chance as
he curled a shot over the bar
from 25 yards out and a couple
of free kicks on the right brought
hope but didn't result in much.
The chances
were coming though as a long ball
by Lomas saw Czerkas break through
on the right and cut inside but
Tony Warner came flying out of
goal and the Polish striker appeared
to lose his bottle and fluffed
the chance to take it round the
keeper.
Rangers continued to press with
plenty of long balls out of defence
to the lone striker, one of them
from Lomas saw Ainsworth break
through the middle but his shot
was weak and saved by Warner.
It wasn't all long ball by any
means as we played some neat and
tidy football in the Leeds half
with Ward and Cook involved in
our best work but as the game
wore on Leeds began to take control
and we very quickly ran out of
steam.
Steve
Stone was giving us problems and
played a ball into Healy whose
shot was well saved by Jones.
The back four were looking nervous
both individually and collectively.
We tried
to play out from the back but
Rose and Stewart didn't seem too
comfortable when under pressure
and we continually lost possession.
Milanese on the left hasn't played
much in pre season and it showed
as he looked well off the pace.
Rangers were weak to any cross
into the box with Rose and Stewart
both missing headers and it took
some good blocks by Rowlands and
Lomas to divert some Leeds shots.
Paul Jones did well to save one
Healy effort which looked to be
going in. Leeds were well on top
and should have taken the lead
through Gary Kelly.
Eddie Lewis
ran at Bignot and like a moth
to a flame Rose and Stewart went
to block Lewis leaving Kelly unmarked
at the far post and a good low
cross found the right back but
his effort was dire and sliced
high and wide.
Ranger's only attacks were either
long balls for Czerkas to chase
or long balls to Ainsworth's head
which he rarely won. Czerkas was
looking isolated up front and
given very little support so when
he did get the ball he was usually
the only QPR player in the Leeds
half. Nick Ward had a good go
at getting forward but by the
time he got up to support Czerkas
we had lost the ball.
Leeds
had one more chance to go in a
goal up at half time as the QPR
fans anxiously hoped for the half
to be brought to an end. A strong
tackle by Stewart on Bakke saw
the Jamaican defender win the
ball but a free kick was given
and Stewart was booked for his
trouble.
Bakke lay
on the floor for ages and was
helped off the pitch before miraculously
not only regaining the ability
to walk but he was jogging then
sprinting within seconds.
Eddie Lewis took the free kick
curling it around the wall but
Jones got down well to save and
after a long four minutes of injury
time we went in at half time happy
to be level.
During the break the new smoking
rules came into effect with the
Blue and White Bar empty due to
the no smoking which was good.
The down
side was when going back to the
Upper loft it was like walking
through fog with the amount of
smoke around. I'm sure that's
something we'll get used to though
as the season continues.
Rangers started the second half
brightly and went close to taking
the lead. A nice pass by Ward
found Cook on the right who ran
at defence, he beat his man and
played a lovely pass to Milanese
but he didn't have the pace to
reach it and the defender knocked
it out for a corner.
Leeds
soon regained control though and
dominated possession in midfield
to the extent that we rarely got
a touch.
A free
kick on left from Lewis was heading
to the far post where Stewart
missed header and Healy had time
and space but his shot was blocked
by Rowlands. This was a chance
for Rangers and a quick break
was started as Cook and Ward exchanged
passes then crossed to Ainsworth
but Crainey got back and headed
out for a corner.
It was now a case of when Leeds
would score rather than QPR as
our attacking threat was almost
zero with Leeds controlling the
game but lacking a killer touch
up front. Ray Jones was brought
on to replace Czerkas but the
young striker was left up front
on his own for a while where he
struggled.
The goal finally came with twenty
minutes to go and it was poor
defending by Rangers to give the
visitors the lead.
Geoff Horsfield
played a part in the goal as he
held off three Rangers players
with ease to lay it off to Stone,
his cross was met by the unmarked
Healy who hit the bar with his
header. The rebound was missed
by Bignot and Lewis had reacted
well to place his shot into the
top corner.
That
looked like game over as Rangers
had very little to offer going
forward. Shabazz Baidoo replaced
Bignot and played on the right
wing with Ainsworth going up front
and Rowlands to the right back.
The change had an immediate effect
with Rangers finally having some
life in attack and an equaliser
soon followed.
Lee Cook was becoming frustrated
with his lack of the ball and
when he collected a throw in he
wasted no time in curling a cross
to the far post. Ainsworth stood
his ground and waited for Crainey
to clatter into his back and a
penalty was given. It was perhaps
a harsh decision but a defender
of Crainey's experience shouldn't
have allowed himself to get in
that position.
Tony Warner was booked as he tried
to delay the penalty which took
and age to be taken, after Warner
was back in goal the ref then
took about 15 seconds to keep
the players out of the box whilst
Rowlands stood looking a very
lonely figure. The whistle went
and Rowlands took a deep breath
strolled up and found the bottom
corner to make it 1-1.
A point saved but Rangers continued
that habit of throwing away good
opportunities and within a minute
we were behind again. Kelly played
a long ball into the box which
should have been dealt with, it
was an easy header for Stewart
but his positioning was awful
and he missed the header.
Horsfield
knocked it down to Healy and the
Rangers defence again followed
the ball and Healy played the
ball to Horsefield in acres of
space to make it 2-1. This was
the cue for many fans to leave
as another frustrating night looked
on the cards.
To
Rangers credit they never gave
up and threw everything at getting
an equaliser. Rowlands was replaced
by Bircham and the youngsters
up front began to come into their
own.
Ray Jones was causing all sorts of problems and came so close to an equaliser.
With his back to goal he picked out a clever pass to Cook then set off looking for the return which he got and Jones was suddenly clear, he looked up and fired in a shot which just wide of the near post.
Jones looked
angry with himself but he had
no need to be and he continued
to work hard and cause Leeds problems.
Despite all the money Leeds have
spent over the last few year they
still look shaky at the back and
despite them dominating much of
the game you could see Rangers
getting another goal.
That goal came just as the board came up for four minutes injury time.
Cook cut inside and crossed to the far post but it just evaded Jones. Ainsworth wouldn't give it up though and chased the ball down and just kept it in to cross into the middle.
It
looked an easy save for Warner
but Baidoo came out of nowhere
to nip in front of the keeper
and poach his first goal at Loftus
Road. The crowd went wild as we
stole a point we didn't deserve
but who cares.
Rangers then almost won it as
Leeds fell apart.
Ainsworth
played a ball down the right to
Baidoo and the youngster showed
great awareness to find Jones
whose pace again got him clear
but his shot was weak and parried
by Warner with Ainsworth, Cook
and Jones all having a swing at
the rebound but couldn't connect.
A last minute free kick brought
a last hope of all three points
but Cook fired straight against
the wall and as the fans sang
who needs Wayne Rooney when we've
got Baidoo the game ended with
the Rangers fans celebrating as
if we'd won.
This was a good result especially
given the circumstances and with
the first choice strikers out
injured.
Still plenty to work on though.
At the back we were a shambles.
No organisation, no leaders and
Leeds will be kicking themselves
that they didn't beat us by a
cricket score with the possession
they had. Macca needs to sort
things out at the back, every
time a cross came in we were all
over the place and only some rather
lucky deflections stopped them
scoring a few in the first half.
We need someone in the team to organise, put people in positions and encourage much like Steve Palmer did a few years back.
I
suppose Lomas is there to do that
but he's on the transfer list
and doesn't look too bothered.
In his defence though he hasn't
played any football pre season
so can be excused for looking
so rusty, same goes for Milanese
who is well off the pace at the
moment.
The last ten minutes though were
promising when Waddock finally
put a few forwards on, Baidoo
was on the wing which was ridiculous
but at least he was on and deserved
his goal.
Ray Jones
was a revelation when he was given
a striker partner, like Czerkas
he struggled on his own up front
but when Ainsworth joined him
he had a bit more space and was
very unlucky not to score.
Can't say I was impressed by any
of the new boys, I think Czerkas
will look better if he has some
support as he was the only attacker
in the Leeds half for most of
the game.
Ward tried
hard but will need to adjust to
the pace of the English game and
Stewart looked very dodgy but
was not helped by Rose who had
a mare. The arrival of Rehmann
from Fulham will hopefully help
but we badly need some cover at
right back as well as Bignot is
not at his be
st at the moment. Still a point
at home to Leeds is a decent result
and hopefully the last minute
goal will inspire a bit of confidence
and self belief which is badly
lacking in some of the players.
