Rangers
playing live on Sky usually means
a drab game and a defeat and right
on cue Gary Waddock's men produced
a typical live on TV performance
to gift struggling Ipswich a first
win of the season.
Gary Waddock recalled his more senior
players for the game with Rose,
Milanese, Lomas and Gallen all starting
the game whilst Ray Jones replaced
Baidoo up front.
The changes worked at first as Rangers
came flying out of the blocks and
looked to get the win that could
have taken us into a playoff position
Cook and Ward were combining well
and the Australian midfielder went
close on three occasions smashing
in two shots which were blocked
and a third beat the keeper but
was just over the bar. Following
a lovely passing move. Gallen also
had an effort blocked as we passed
and moved and tore the visitors
apart.
It didn't last long though as Ipswich
began to get back in the game and
Rangers began to struggle to break
down Ipswich.
Rangers
almost gifted Ipswich the lead when
Paul Jones flapped at a free kick
and Rangers just about scrambled
it clear. It was a rare mistake
by Jones but the keeper never really
recovered and the back four looked
shaky for the rest of the game.
Rangers continued to have chances
though as lee Cook went close with
a curling shot and then Ray Jones
headed a quality Cook cross over
the bar.
The game was very open with both
sides creating chances and Clarke
twice went close for the visitors
with Jones denying the striker with
a near post save on one occasion
and the young striker fired wide
on the other.
Gallen and Cook swapped wings as
Gallen was struggling on the right
wing and to be honest faired no
better on the left. Personally I'd
have moved Blackstock out wide who
has the pace to fill in that position
but I suppose Waddock opted for
experience in midfield, which has
worked in the past.
Rangers missed a golden chance to
take the lead and again it was Ray
Jones creating the chance.
Jones did brilliantly to control a ball with one touch and then play a wonderful defence splitting pass to Blackstock but the half a million pound man perhaps had too much time and hit his shot straight at the keeper.
It was
a chance the youngster really should
have taken but once again Blackstock's
movement and pace were making up
for his lack of killer instinct
in front of goal.
Ipswich began top take control as
Rangers looked very open at the
back. De Vos missed a good chance,
which was saved by Jones, and Clarke
hit the bar as Rehmann stood off
his man with some dire defending.
At half time Rangers were under
the cosh but the half had been quite
even with both sides having a good
number of chances. Waddock needed
to sort the back four out though
and sadly he didn't, as things got
a lot worse after the break.
Not only were the defence all over
the place we now lost all of our
shape. Lomas might has well have
sat with me for all the good he
was doing protecting the back four
whilst Gallen was looking more and
more like someone playing out of
position and was rarely in the game.
Cook was very quiet back on the left and poor Nick Ward was running around watching the ball pumped over his head. The front two's movement was rarely utilised and Ipswich couldn't believe their luck.
Space
began to open up for them as they
played through and us round us and
it was only a matter of time before
they scored. Amazingly though it
was Rangers who took the lead around
the hour mark.
Dexter Blackstock made the goal
on the left with a high cross to
the far post where Gallen got in
front of his marker and held him
off to steer the ball home from
close range. It was Gallen's 100th
league goal of his career and his
second in a week, which can only
help as he looks to regain his full
fitness.
As the QPR fans roared out that
Kevin Gallen was magic, the visitors
worked a way back in the game with
this seasons first dodgy penalty
against us. Gavin Williams broke
into the box and rather than trying
to have a shot or a cross he just
threw himself on the floor as soon
as he went close to a defender and
won a penalty. A very harsh decision
but in all fairness Ipswich had
deserved a way back into the game.
They took the chance as Simon Walton
stepped up and scored low into the
bottom corner, as the ball seemed
to go through Jones arms.
Ipswich were not flying Rangers
looked a mess, Williams fired in
a brilliant volley from a corner
which hit the base of the post whilst
Jones had to tip over a long-range
effort.
It was all Ipswich and a second
goal wasn't far away, it came from
another corner and Rangers zonal
marking was undone as we all stood
marking space and De Vos had plenty
of time to run in at the far post
and knock the ball over the line
with his thigh.
Waddock made a change to chase the
game but the idea of bringing on
like for like with Bircham replacing
Lomas was a strange one when he
had more attacking options such
as Oliseh on the bench. Rangers
really just needed to keep the ball
and although Bircham came on and
did OK his game was all about breaking
up the play rather than creating
anything.
We went to a 3-4-3 when Baidoo replaced
Milanese but our only route of attack
was still a long punt forward and
hope something would fall to us
in the box. It almost worked as
a high ball by Gallen caused a bit
of panic but Jones, Blackstock and
Baidoo were all crowded out by the
Ipswich defence.
Ipswich could and should have scored
a few more but in the end just added
one more to the score line as Stewart's
attempt to tackle Williams was pathetic
and the cross in to the middle found
Bowdich with a free header. This
was the cue for most of the QPR
in the stadium to leave and by the
final whistle most fans left were
too bored or pissed off to even
bother to boo the team off.
This was a very poor night at the
office for Rangers and to put it
down to the usual Sky jinx would
be papering over the cracks.
At the back we are simply not good enough. Nearly ten years after Rose proved he can't play at right back he is back in the position and is again showing he can't play at right back.
Milanese continues to look sluggish and a weak link whilst neither of the two centre halves were able to dominate and we looked very open and easy top score again.
That's
not the first time this season either
and we've been spared in recent
games by several sitters missed
by Preston, Southend and Northampton.
In midfield we lacked any sort of
shape without Rowlands and Ainsworth.
Gallen is still not a right winger
and I was a little surprised to
see Lomas start ahead of Oliseh
in a match which always looked like
it would be an open passing game
rather than one that needed a battler
in midfield.
Still Waddock will have learnt a
lot about his side in this game
and hopefully the manager and players
can work on things over the next
few weeks and return with an improved
performance and result at Ian Holloway's
Plymouth.
