John
Gregory's first match in charge
was labelled as a must win for Rangers
as we faced fellow strugglers Hull
City, so no pressure John!
Unfortunately I was unable to get
to the game as I was at a friends
wedding instead and due to having
no phone signal I had no way of
finding out the score until later
in the evening which was a little
frustrating to say the least.
Back in West London though John
Gregory made a few changes for his
first game in charge. Paul Jones
was back in goal for Rangers and
there was a welcome return for Simon
Royce among the subs after his long
layoff through injury.
The back four saw Bignot start on
the right, Rose on the left with
Stewart and Rehmann in the middle.
The midfield was made up of Cook,
Bircham Bailey and the returning
Martin Rowlands started on the right.
Up front Dexter Blackstock partnered
Ray Jones.
The first half was a tight affair
but Rangers had the better of it.
Martin Rowlands had an early chance,
which he made for himself by cutting
inside and smashing a shot in which
was well saved.
Cook was Rangers danger man on the
left and created chances for Stewart
and Blackstock, which were missed.
At the other end Paul Jones had
very little to do and at half time
the score was 0-0 but it was an
encouraging start for Rangers.
During the break Gregory made his
first change with Pat Kanyuka replacing
Matthew Rose. The switch saw Rehmann
go to right back and Bignot to the
left and the change made Rangers
moiré solid at the back. Rehmann
looked far more comfortable on the
right and Rangers continued to dominate
possession after the game.
Rangers were finding the goal hard
to come by though and it took until
the hour mark before Rangers grabbed
the lead. Rowlands made the goal
with a curling free kick, which
was flicked on by Blackstock for
Ray Jones to head home at the far
post. Jones ran to the fans and
celebrated in style, the relief
was evident around the stadium.
Gregory then made a move to change
the midfield with Lomas and Ward
replacing Bircham and Bailey, The
change worked a treat with the fresh
legs making sure Hull never girt
back into the game and the game
was made safe with a second goal
in the last ten minutes.
This time it was Lee Cook who created
the goal with a good run and a perfect
cross to the far post for Dexter
Blackstock to head home his second
of the season. John Gregory celebrated
like a man possessed as he sprinted
down the touchline and punched the
air.
So a 2-0 win for Rangers and a great
start for John Gregory as we move
off the bottom and out of the bottom
three. Still plenty of work to be
done and no corner has been turned
yet but Gregory will be delighted
to get his first win under his belt
and the return from injury of Rowlands
and Blackstock will no doubt give
everyone hope of a push up the table.
