Queens Park Rangers 0

Coventry City 1

Unbeaten in five games and scoring in every game under John Gregory meant that confidence was high among the supporters and players ahead of the visit of Coventry City on Saturday.

Rangers were forced into one change as Gareth Ainsworth's injury ruled him out of the game and in all likelihood will see him sit on the sidelines for at least another month. Nick Ward replaced him and there was a welcome return on the bench for Martin Rowlands and Kevin Gallen.

Rangers kicked off with an aimless hoof into the Ellerslie Road stand and that set the standard really for a disappointing afternoons work from QPR.

Lee Cook almost got us off to a dream start though with one of his now trademark deliveries from the left, it came from a corner and Stewart met the ball at the near post and headed over when he really should have scored.

There was no real tempo to Rangers game though and the visitors looked far more dangerous than we did. Most pf their efforts were from long range, which Royce had no trouble dealing with but they were finding it very easy to get in behind us. The on loan Darren Currie delivered several excellent balls into the box to rival our own Lee Cook for accuracy but Coventry failed to get anyone on then end of the crosses which were crying out to be finished off.

Adebola was causing plenty of problems for Rehmann who to be fair wasn't as bad as he has been recently but he has never looked comfortable against a big powerful forward and Adebola had the beating of him.

It was in midfield where the main problems lay and we just couldn't keep the ball. Bailey was having a mare giving it away as quickly as he could whilst Ward and Smith couldn't really get into the game. We seemed to have a game plan of give it to Cook and see what he can do with it. Usually Cook created something out of nothing but he needed more help and Coventry soon worked out that they could just kick him and with Cook getting no protection from the referee our attacking options were now limited.

We did have a few late chances before the break to go ahead but on the balance of play we didn't really deserve the lead. Smith fired in a low shot, which was well saved, and Blackstock was also denied by the keeper with his last touch of the game. Blackstock was taken off on 43 minutes with Ray Jones coming on. Blackstock had been struggling since getting a whack in the cheek when he went up for a header with Damion Stewart and hopefully his knock is not too serious.

Cook had the fans on their feet right on half time with a sublime piece of skill. On the edge of the box he dummied to cut inside then pulled the ball back and past two bemused looking Coventry players before firing in a shot, which was well saved. As the whistle went for half time optimism was high against after a good finish to the half but things didn't seem quite right and soon after half time we were behind.

I was still in the toilet when Leon McKenzie missed a sitter and by the time I got to my seat Coventry were on their way to the only goal of the game. Rehmann seemed to get the blame but from where I was sitting it looked a very good goal. Adebola spun away from Rehmann and despite his age he wasn't going to be caught and before Royce could get out to meet him he powered a shot into the back of the net. We'd have been raving about the goal if Blackstock had done but as it was against us we just moaned at Rehmann

Rangers came close to an equaliser when the impressive Bignot delivered a cross on the left and Nygaard's header loped over the keeper and onto the bar. It was the closest Nygaard had come and his last involvement in the game as Kevin Gallen came on whilst Stefan Bailey also came off with Rowlands slotting into central midfield. To be honest I'd have put Rowlands on the right as we lacked any sort of threat on that wing.

The rest of the game was attack vs defence as Coventry got men behind the ball defended very well against everything we could throw at them which in truth was not much. We were very congested in the middle and our main playmaker was being kicked all of the pitch and getting no free kicks. After one clear foul Cook was actually warned about diving by the referee which was incredible

Most of our chances were coming from long range as Smith, Cook and Gallen all went close from the edge of the box but we weren't testing the keeper enough and time was against us. Coventry were also looking dangerous on the break as McKenzie and Marcus Hall both missed great chances to kill the game off.

Damion Stewart had a good chance to nick a point in the last minute as Gallen flicked on a Cook cross but despite being unmarked the ball was just a little too far ahead of Stewart and he couldn't make contact with it Five minuets of injury time saw a late flourish with Simon Royce going up for a corner and Cook curling a free kick over the bar but it was all in vain and for the first time this season we lost at home on a Saturday.

Overall I thought we were poor against Coventry.

Cook, Bignot and Stewart played well but it took us far too long to get going. A point would have been a fair result but Coventry missed two sitters in the second half so it could have been a lot worse. Hopefully that's a wake up call for a few of the players who started the game forgetting what had made us a good side in recent weeks. My only complaint with Gregory was that he didn't switch Rowlands and Ward as we had no width on the right and all our attacks ended up through Cook again as he ended up playing on both wings at one stage. On the plus side with Gregory though he didn't mess about with his subs. I said after ten minutes that Gallen would be on by 55 minutes but I didn't expect him to throw Rowlands on as well to go for it. That is a major step forward to the way we used subs under Waddock and Holloway.

Gallen was a bit unlucky with his two shots as was Smith but with all the goals we've scored over the last month we were always going to have one game where nothing I'm still quite optimistic though and I think we'll bounce back on Tuesday.
