After
Tuesdays memorable win over Preston it
was back to work for angers with a tough
looking trip to the Ricoh Arena and face
an improving Coventry City.
Due to engineering works on the train
we had to seek an alternative way of getting
to the game and thankfully the club out
on extra coaches, which proved to be the
easiest and cheapest way of getting to
see the team in action.
The coach journey was relatively quick
to be honest and we were at the ground
just after 2pm for my second visit to
this new stadium. I have to say it is
much improved from my last visit. They
opened up far more bars on the concourse
making it easy to get a drink or food
and they even had a Wimpy burger bar,
which proved to be popular among the fans.
The view was much better this year mainly
as I wasn't sat in the front row. This
time I was nearer the back and after climbing
the very steep stairs we sat among the
2,000 strong support to roar the team
on to another victory. We were in for
as hock when the team was announced though
as Gregory made several changes some enforced
some due to players needing rest during
a busy period of the season.
Pat Kanyuka returned at right back to
replace the injured Mancienne whilst Bignot
was rested giving a chance at left back
for Timoska who has lost his ponytail
during his spell out of the side. Jimmy
Smith made his first start since January
replacing Lomas in the heart of midfield
whilst the rotation up front continued
with Furlong and Nygaard swapping places
again. The biggest shock was on the left
wing where Stefan Moore (yes he's still
here) was the choice to replace the injured
Lee Cook.
Rangers attacked the end where the QPR
fans were sat in the first half and we
had the first chance in a nervy opening
from both sides. Ainsworth won the ball
on the right and Bolder picked it up and
smashed his shot wide of the post.
At the other end Coventry were pushing
for an early goal and Camp was called
upon early to deny Fadiga. Rangers looked
all over the place at the back as a simple
ball saw Fadiga in acres of space on the
left but Camp was quick off his line to
save at his feet and concede the corner.
The home side looked bright but offered
little of an attacking threat with Cullip
and co defending well after a shaky opening
few minutes which seems to be the norm
at the moment with us.
Gareth Ainsworth was once again our main
attacking threat and he was making the
impossible possible with his non-stop
working. As the ball appeared to be going
out for a throw in a Coventry defender
strolled over to see it out but Ainsworth
was having none of it and slid in to win
the ball and break away for Rangers. He
ran into the box and smashed a low shot
just wide of the far post.
Ainsworth was getting plenty of the ball
on the right and giving it his all but
unlike his last two appearances his final
ball was not so good on this occasion
and when he got into good positions he
couldn't pick out the front two or the
onrushing jimmy Smith.
On the other wing Rangers had very little
to off. Moore looked low on confidence
and sadly low on effort during the first
half playing as if it was a pre season
stroll rather than a crucial game for
the club. In his defence though it must
be hard to come in for your first appearance
of the season and be asked to play out
of position.
Lee Camp was again called into action
as our problem left side was exposed again.
Timoska and Moore were nowhere to be seen
as a ball down the line for Misfud saw
him run clear but Camp came running out
and saved at his feet before getting up
and producing an excellent slide tackle
on Whing to get the ball out for a throw
in. He was called into action again soon
after when poor defending at a corner
allowed Ward a chance but Camp did well
to get down low and keep out his effort.
As the half came to an end Coventry had
been getting on top and Rangers looked
happy to hear the half time whistle and
go in at 0-0. News that Leeds, Luton and
Barnsley were all losing certainly gave
everyone a boost.
The game had been very similar to the
recent one at Leicester where we had done
ok without causing many problems but with
us still in the game hopes were very high
that we could push on and get the win
in the second half.
The players seemed to be of the same thinking
and came out all guns blazing looking
for that opening goal. We won an early
corner, which was played to the back post
where Kanyuka won the, header but Furlong
couldn't convert this half chance that
came his way.
Rangers looked bright and alive at the
start of the half and we got the vital
goal eight minutes after the break. Adam
Bolder got the ball in the box on the
right and he turned inside to leave the
defender on his backside, his ball across
found Furlong in space but he was denied
by Marshall when he seemed certain the
score. The ball ran loose though to Moore
with the goal gaping but his shot was
brilliantly saved on the line by the keeper
and just as we despaired at a great chance
gone jimmy Smith came in and made no mistake
firing into the bottom corner.
The relief was evident among the players
and the fans and the job as we looked
for our second away win in a row.
John Gregory then used his subs well over
a quiet twenty minute spell as Coventry
ran out of ideas and Rangers kept things
very solid. Marcus Bignot came on for
Timoska and immediately added some reassurance
to the back four and his non stop encouragement
was a big boost. Marc Nygaard came on
to offer some fresh legs up front in place
of the tiring Furlong whilst Steve Lomas
also came on for excellent Bolder.
It was a hard working performance and
as time wore on Rangers were sitting deeper
and deeper and saying break us down to
the opposition and Coventry had very little
clue how to do it. Camp was rarely called
into action and Coventry had to resort
to cheating to have one attack after Kanyuka
went down injured they refused to kick
the ball out leaving Cullip to have to
clear it and from the throw in they refused
to throw it back to us and won a corner.
It would have been typical if they had
scored from that but Rangers anger was
clear for all to see and Camp made easy
work of the corner.
At the other end we went close to finishing
the game off as Ainsworth sold his full
back and dummy and was clear in the box,
he looked up and Nygaard screamed for
the ball as he had an pen goal but Ainsworth's
pass was poor and straight at the keeper.
On the left Stefan Moore was showing a
vast improvement on his first half display.
He was subject of a nasty early tackle
from Virgo and that seemed to wake him
up, after that he was well up for the
battle proved to be a good outlet on the
break with his pace causing problems.
Jimmy Smith had another long range effort
to try and seal it but he didn't test
the keeper. Then at the other end just
as my mate Phil was saying how Coventry
were not going top break us down one passed
carved us open as Mczenzie got in behind
us but combination of Bignot and Camp
came to the rescue and cleared the danger.
Lee Camp was having a great game in the
Rangers goal and he was urging the fans
on for last effort as the clock turned
towards the 90 minute mark. Just as the
board went up to indicate four minutes
injury time a complete moron of a Coventry
ran decided to run on the pitch. No idea
what he was trying to do, perhaps he was
a conservative streaker who knows but
he ran to Cullip who gave him a shove
then got up and ran to Camp before Kevin
Kyle reacted angrily and pushed him to
the floor.
All this happened without one steward
or policeman running on to avert any danger
and although the bloke looked to be just
pissed he could have been carrying a knife
or anything to try and attack a player>
it sounds like I'm over dramatising the
situation but after the Stoke incident
last year and the recent Spurs v Chelsea
incident it's only a matter of time imo
before a player is seriously hurt and
the lack of response of the police and
stewards in this instance was a disgrace.
Back to the football and with four minutes
of injury time to negotiate Rangers managed
it without any real problems and the final
whistle brought more great scenes of celebrations.
The players and fans were loving it and
the six points taken from the last two
games have given us a great chance of
staying up.
The players were throwing their shirts
into the crowd with Cullip, Ainsworth,
Camp and Bolder in particular going mad
in front of the ecstatic QPR fans and
even the chairmen joined in as Paladini
was seen running on the pitch to hug Gareth
Ainsworth.
We're not safe yet but this has been a
brilliant few days for Rangers and puts
us in a very strong position. This wasn't
the best performance of the season by
a long way but the team worked hard and
considering who we were missing it was
a fantastic result. I don't think many
would have believed that QPR could win
away from home without Cook, Rowlands,
Idiakez and Mancienne but we managed it
with some ease it has to be said.
Camp and Cullip were the star men for
me. Camp did his job made one or two saves
and commanded his area at corners. Cullip
was outstanding and just refused to let
anyone get past him, he's the kind of
defender we were crying out for when Shittu
left and his arrival has played a massive
part in our improvement. Stewart and Kanyuka
were also excellent at the back as was
Bignot when he came on.
Ainsworth has been sensational in the
last 3 games, he's the kind of player
that makes you proud to be a QPR fan,
his effort yesterday was frightening.
The celebrations at the end were great,
you can see what it means to the players,
a win on Monday and I think we're just
about safe and that is a sensational effort
considering where we were a few weeks
ago .
Such a big result yesterday but the turnaround
for me came on March 3rd when the fans
sang we can't win with one up front. Since
then we have done away with the Cook or
Rowlands up front madness and have lost
just once since to a late goal against
West Brom in a game we should have won.
Credit to Gregory though as he used his
squad well for this game resting some
players and was still able to get a result.
He was brought in with the aim of keeping
us up and with five games to go he is
very close to achieving that earlier than
many of us dared to expect.
Luton are next up for Rangers and if the
players can show the same effort and determination
in that one then I think we'll be celebrating
again come 5pm on Monday.
