Pre Season Friendly
Saturday July 8th

Aldershot 1 Queens Park Rangers 1
Pritchard Doherty

With the World Cup still going on in Germany all eyes were on a sunny Saturday in Aldershot as QPR got their pre season campaign underway.

Gary Waddock use the game to try out several of the younger members of his squad and played virtually a different side in each half.

Youngsters Sean Thomas, Pat Kanyuka, Stefan Moore and Shabazz Baidoo all started the game whilst new signing Armel Tchakounte started along with three trialists.

Gareth Ainsworth had Rangers first chance of the game but that was off target as the team looked rusty after a long summer break. Aldershot had the better of the early chances with Sean Thomas saving well to keep out Molesley.

It was Rangers who took the lead though through an unlikely source.

Transfer listed Tom Doherty scored his first goal for the club with a David Beckham style free kick which curled over the wall from 25 yards out into the top corner past former Rangers keeper Nikki Bull.

Marcus Bignot went close to scoring a second goal as he toe poked from close range just wide from a corner.

At half time Waddock rang the changes bringing on another trialist as well as first teamers Gallen, Cook, Evatt and Lomas as well as Bailey and Donnelly.

The change to more of a first team didn't have the required effect as Gallen smashed his one chance high over the bar and looked very rusty which is understandable as he only played a handful of games since last November.

Lee Cook looked exciting again on the left wing putting over one lovely cross which no one could get on the end of.

Sean Thomas was the star man though making one excellent one on one save from Ryan Williams before denying Hudson with an equally impressive stop.

Rangers kept possession well in the second half but lacked the pace in the side to worry the opposition and non league Aldershot finally equalised when Pritchard pushed the ball over the line following a deep cross across the face of goal. It was no more than the home side deserved and the game ended 1-1.

Not the best of results, Rangers won the same fixture 3-0 this time last year but as ever results rarely matter in pre season.

Gary Waddock seemed happy enough. Commenting on the match on the official QPR web site he said: "I'm pleased with what I've seen today, we don't want to peak now, it's all about building our fitness up as we approach our first League game of the new season.

"We have a slow and steady approach so that we peak at that point, not too soon before. "We've seen a few things that we can go back and work on next week and we'll look forward to cracking on in our next game.

"Most of the players got 45 minutes and that was our aim. "I was pleased with Armel at the back and there was one particular trialist that I was very pleased with - I'm sure the fans who were here today will know who I'm talking about.

"I want to thank the fans who turned out today as well. They were great as always."

Waddock will be looking forward to Rangers next pre season game when his team travel to Stevenage and the QPR boss will be hoping is new signing Nick Ward will make his long awaited debut in that game.
