Apologies for the late match report and the fact that it is a shorter version than usual. Due to the house move and me still unable to connect to the Internet at my new house, coupled with starting a new job this week it's not been easy to find the time to get this done. Hopefully normal service will be resumed in the near future.
On
the back of an impressive
win at Brammal Lane,
Gary Waddock was
forced into changes
for the visit of
in form Wolves as
Waddock again locked
horns with Glenn
Hoddle brining back
memories of the
1982 FA Cup final.
Mauro Milanese and
Gareth Ainsworth
returned from suspension
but injury and illness
ruled out Bircham,
Lomas, Nygaard and
Evatt meaning a
first start of the
season for Stefan
Bailey, who only
signed professional
forms last week
and a return to
first team action
for Kevin Gallen.
It was a baptism
of fire for the
youngster as the
visitors dominated
the early period.
The
movement of the
midfield was too
much for Rangers
and the combination
of Bailey and Langley
looked outclassed
very early on as
we struggled to
compete, and Wolves
could have been
ahead early. Paul
Jones got down well
to save low efforts
from Anderton and
Miller whilst Cort
should have done
better when put
clear.
As the half wore
on though we began
to adapt. Bailey
sat in front of
the back four as
the full backs pushed
on and chances began
to come for us.
Some lovely skill
by Langley on the
right saw him cut
inside and set up
Ainsworth to scoop
a shot over the
bar.
Lee Cook was having
a quiet start to
the game but he
soon burst into
life with a free
kick which tested
the keeper and his
wing play began
to improve as he
tormented his full
back and got several
crosses into the
box which just evaded
the front two.
Kevin Gallen was
having a quiet return
to the team. His
hold up play and
passing were excellent
but he never really
looked fully fit
and alongside Furlong
the partnership
wasn't working.
To be fair to Gallen
though I don't think
much more was expected
of him after so
long out.
Wolves almost grabbed
the lead before
half time after
a well-worked move.
Kenny Miller was
clean through and
looked to find the
bottom corner but
Jones did brilliantly
to get down and
turn the shot away
with his feet.
At half time it
wasn't the best
of games and the
atmosphere was pretty
poor as well. The
game was quite fascinating
to watch though
and I quite enjoyed
the midfield battle
between the two
sides which despite
the good start by
Wolves was becoming
even.
Rangers went on
to have the better
of the second half
without creating
much. We did seem
to panic a little
at times and resort
to the long ball
into the channel
which didn't really
work well but when
we did get the ball
down and play we
looked more than
a match for one
of the best sides
on paper the division
has to offer.
We had our chances
to win the game
as a Cook cross
was headed wide
by Shittu but once
again it was a case
of the wide players
working themselves
into good positions
and then wasting
the final ball.
At times I wish
Ainsworth would
just have a shot
rather than trying
to get the cross
in when he gets
in the box.
Richard Langley
was improving as
the game wore on
as was Bailey The
youngster wasn't
at his best and
at times looked
a little lost out
there but he'll
learn al lot from
playing against
Paul Ince and this
sort of game can
only do him good.
Sammy Youssouf replaced
Kevin Gallen on
the hour mark and
the Santos look
alike did little
to impress in the
last half an hour.
Rangers should have
grabbed the lead
when the linesmen
and referee missed
a blatant penalty
appeal.
A
diagonal ball to
Ainsworth was about
to reach the winger
but Naylor diverted
it wide with his
hand, it was a blatant
as they come but
neither the ref
nor lino spotted
it.
Dan Shittu then
smashed a long range
shot just wide after
a nice one-two with
Langley.
Wolves stepped up
a gear and almost
won the game in
the closing stages.
A break into the
box saw the French
Bloke on loan from
Arsenal (I can't
spell his name)
shot just wide of
the post before
Paul Jones completed
a remarkable week
for with an amazing
double save.
Last week his penalty
save was the difference
between the a draw
and three points,
on Wednesday his
man of the match
performance kept
World Cup bound
Paraguay to a 0-0
draw and against
Wolves his produced
one of the saves
of the season.
First
the French blokes
effort was parried
onto the post, Cort
got the rebound
on target but Jones
got up and saved
again pushing against
the post before
Shittu cleared to
a huge cheer and
a standing ovation.
Rangers saw out
the final few minutes
pushing for a goal
themselves but in
the end a goalless
draw was about right.
The new management
team will have again
learnt much from
this game. On the
plus side I thought
Cook again looked
very sharp whilst
the back four all
defended well and
got forward to support
the attack.
It was good to see Shittu take a captains lead when Galen went off shoving Bignot away from an argument with Ince whilst Langley also ushered Milanese away after arguing over the penalty incident.
Paul
Jones was sensational
in goal and despite
Royce being many
peoples pick for
player of the season
he'll have his work
cut out to get back
in the side.
The only disappointment
was again up front
where none of Gallen,
Furlong or Youssouf
looked like scoring.
Rangers travel to
Sheffield Wednesday
next where we will
hopefully look to
build on another
decent performance
and get all three
points.
