So after a two-week break it was back to the world of QPR yesterday as we made the long trip down to Plymouth on a freezing cold morning.
After leaving the house at around twenty past seven in the morning we arrived in Plymouth just before one o'clock in time to see the exciting game between Arsenal and Wigan before the police decided we were having too much fun and closed the pub to walk us to the ground.
Luckily they let me and Carly go and we were able to get to the ground pretty quickly for a pre match beer and hear the team news. It sounded pretty positive as the teams were read out.
Gareth
Ainsworth replaced Dean Sturridge
with the rest of the side
the same as the one who were
unlucky to lose to Reading
two weeks ago. It was also
good to see Martin Rowlands
on the bench after his long
lay off and youngster Shabazz
Baidoo also featured among
the subs.
A decent Rangers following
were in good voice as the
teams came out and kicked
off with Rangers defending
the goal in front of the QPR
fans. Rangers actually started
quite brightly which was to
make what followed even more
frustrating.
A corner from Langley caused
problems as Shittu went close
and Cook got away from his
full back in an early burst
that showed plenty of promise
but the final ball was poor.
We
were knocking the ball about
well and looked a decent side.
Plymouth were what we expected
from a Tony Pullis side. Big
and strong in the tackle,
hard to play against and giving
100%. Sadly some of our players
didn't look prepared and Plymouths
first real attacked ended
in the opening goal.
Shittu won a header after
a long ball forward but Doherty
and Langley stood watching
as Norris pounced and ran
through the Rangers defence.
It was embarrassing defending and Royce had to come out to save at Norris feet. Royce looked to get a hand on the ball but Norris went over the keeper and the referee had little choice but to give a penalty.
I thought Norris had left
his studs in Royce's chest,
which saw the keeper rolling
around in agony, but from
the referees angle he had
to give the penalty. It looked
like Royce would be sent off
but the referee just dished
out the yellow card I guess
because Norris was going away
from goal. Royce picked himself
up and got ready to face the
penalty. Wootoon struck the
penalty well right down the
middle and although Royce
got a hand to it the shot
was too powerful to keep out.
Rangers now had to rally and
unfortunately didn't. The
midfield pair just couldn't
win the ball back and when
Langley did get on the ball
he rarely had an option and
gave the ball away. Georges
Santos joined Royce in the
book after arguing with the
linesmen as Rangers began
to look a shambles. We almost
got level though through Kevin
Gallen.
Langley took a corner on the left playing it short to Cook then collecting the return pass and crossing for Gallen to flick a header past the keeper but it was cleared off the line. We began to get on top as Santos was put clean through but was waved offside much to the defender/midfielder/strikers/part time full backs frustration.
Rangers
tried the same short corner
on the right with Lee Cook
delivering the cross but Cook's
performance was summed up
as he was beaten to a short
pass by Langley and a good
chance was wasted.
Plymouth were nothing special
but were making Rangers look
second best during the best
spell of the game. Nick Chadwick
went close to a second goal
when he was put clear with
the Rangers defence standing
and looking clueless and it
was again left for Royce to
come out and deny Chadwick
with a good save.
Royce
needed to be at his best again
from a Buskary free kick.
We must have known about him
after his stunning goal against
us last month but we put a
2 man wall up against him
and he curled it over the
wall leaving Royce to make
a brilliant save to keep us
in the game. We weren't in
the game for long though as
more poor defending from a
corner and defender Doumbe
hooked the ball past Royce
for 2-0. Royce had no chance
and was left asking what was
going on with the teams defending.
Rangers were getting frustrated
and the yellow cards were
flowing. Dyer was booked for
a nothing challenge with the
six foot Plymouth player rolling
around after a shoulder barge.
Lee Cook followed him into
the book for sprinting 40
yards (the quickest he moved
all afternoon) to try and
have a fight after Evatt was
kicked off the ball. In truth
the bloke who left Evatt in
a heap should have been the
one getting the talking to
and a red card but the ref
just gave both the Plymouth
player and Cook a yellow and
off we went. Kevin Gallen
was also booked for a poor
tackle on a Plymouth defender.
At half time the team weren't
booed off but that was probably
because most people had walked
out long before the break
to get into the warm away
from the tripe on offer.
The second half didn't get
much better. Tom Doherty limped
off after about 5 minutes
as Martin Rowlands replaced
him and he was soon booked
for a late challenge, which
was only really worth a free
kick not a booking, but this
ref seemed to love a yellow
card. From the free kick Nick
Chadwick was given plenty
of time and space to head
past Royce from Buzaky's free
kick and the game was now
all over.
Ian Holloway made two more
changes taking off Langley
and Santos who had both been
dire. Marcus Bean and Shabazz
Baidoo came on with the later
making quite an impact.
Baidoo had been on a minute
when Evatt headed a Lee cook
corner across goal and Baidoo
hooked the ball in with his
first touch to make it 3-1
and perhaps put us back in
the game. We were suddenly
alive and pushing forward
with Baidoo causing problems
and the two wide players suddenly
looking interested. It didn't
last long though and after
Baidoo was booked for some
handbags with a Plymouth player
we played out the rest of
the game as ineptly as we'd
played the first hour.
Gallen and Ainsworth had late
chances to make the score
more respectable but in the
end we got what we deserved
and good hiding and by the
time the final whistle went
most fans had already left
to make the long journey home.
The only real entertainment
of the last half an hour was
a fat bloke in the Plymouth
end ripping is shirt off and
throwing it on the pitch to
show us how proud he was of
his gut. Lovely stuff but
he soon realised how cold
it was and asked a steward
for his shirt back.
So another away hiding to
go along with the ones dished
out at Wolves, Watford, Coventry
and Northampton this season.
This was a poor performance
by Rangers.
The team Holloway picked wasn't
that bad to be honest. Langley
in central midfield, Ainsworth
out wide. OK Santos up front
wasn't ideal but not the reason
we lost the game. We didn't
start giving the target man
balls to his head until we
took Santos off and then wondered
why Baidoo and Gallen couldn't
out jump six-foot defenders.
Langley got his chance in the middle and failed spectacularly. He was dreadful as was Doherty. He did get a few minutes alongside Rowlands in central midfield but I doubt we'll see him again in the first team for a while.
The
fastest Cook moved all game
was to run over and try to
have a fight and get himself
booked and I might as well
have been up front instead
of Gallen. At the back Shittu
was all over the place making
Micky Evans look like Thierry
Henry. The referee was hopeless
as well, he must have booked
everyone in a blue and white
shirt.
The only bright spots were
Baidoo who at least looked
interested and got his name
on the scoresheet. Royce made
two brilliant saves to keep
the score down. Bean didn't
do much wrong either and good
to see Rowlands back and playing
in central midfield.
We had a good 3 minute spell
when we scored but the other
87 minutes were horrible.
A bloody long way to go to
watch the team play like that
and we ended up home at around
11pm deciding that it might
be sensible to save our money
and give Stoke a miss in a
few weeks.
A
lot of talk about Holloway
needing to go on the way home.
We've got a run of games coming
up where we should pick up
points really and I think
if we don't and we continue
to play as badly as yesterday
and as we did at Watford then
I think Gianni will get rid
of him. Sad as I really want
Holloway to finish the job
he's started but that was
rubbish yesterday.
