At the
start of the season I fully expected
to be travelling to this game with
Norwich already promoted but instead
Nigel Worthington's team have been
a huge disappointment this season
and going into Monday's game they
lay in mid table with protests and
petitions against the manager so
Worthington must have been delighted
that we were the visitors for a
game he needed to win.
On current form this was a huge
miss match with us in free fall
and the home side improving at Carrow
Road. To make matters worse for
Rangers we were without the injured
Gallen, Langley, Donnelly and Evatt,
which required more changes to the
starting eleven. As Bignot, Lomas,
Furlong and Santos were all recalled
and we went back to a 4-4-2 after
Saturdays experiment.
The first half was quite even and
like so many games in recent weeks
never really came to life. Georges
Santos and Dan Shittu were dominant
in defence as Norwich struggled
to create many chances.
Milanese
was once again solid at left back.
Stefan Bailey was again impressive
in midfield looking comfortable
on the ball and strong in the tackle.
Like Norwich though we had very
little threat up front and but we
were passing the ball quite well
and as half time approached it was
a decent performance. That got better
though when we took the lead right
on half time.
It came from a good passing move
as Lomas picked out Ainsworth on
the right and as Nygaard and Furlong
looked for the cross Ainsworth smashed
in an unstoppable shot from an acute
angle into the bottom corner. The
travelling QPR fans were stunned
but celebrated as we took the lead
away from Loftus Road for the first
time since February.
At half time the mood was good among
the QPR fans and we looked set to
build on a good half and win the
game.
That
exactly how it looked after the
break as we continued to keep possession
well although Earnshaw managed to
miss a glorious chance to put his
side level when he shot well wide
from a good position.
Rangers were the better side though
and came very close to a second
goal. Lee Cook whipped in a lovely
corner and reserve keeper Paul Gallagher
made two cracking saves first from
Shittu then Furlong in quick succession.
Rangers
then hit the bar from another Cook
corner as the keeper flapped and
Doherty headed back towards his
own goal.
It was all Rangers and the home
fans had long since turned on their
own team and manager in fact many
fans were queuing outside before
the game to sign a petition to get
rid of Nigel Worthingon, and we
thought we were negative.
Lee Cook deservedly gave us a 2-0
lead with a fantastic goal. Cook
has been in fine form since Waddock
took over and this goal showed what
he is capable of as he picked up
the ball deep, dribbled towards
the penalty area going past two
players then picking his spot and
firing into the bottom corner. It
was a fantastic goal, shame about
the crap celebration that followed
but you can't have everything.
The QPR fans were in fine voice
now and were singing "And now your
gonna believe us, your even worse
than us" which even the home fans
found funny.
It could and should have got better
as Cook went close again with a
free kick but before we knew it
a lovely day went horribly wrong.
Ainsworth started it off with an
awful back header, which Jones did
well to tip over the bar. From the
corner Jones flapped at the cross
and Huckerbby headed home at the
far post.
We had
14 minutes to hold on and all of
a sudden Rangers showed they really
had forgotten how to win a game
of football.
It wasn't all doom and gloom as
we created two clear-cut chances
to finish the game off. First up
Milanese won us a corner after a
good run and from that corner Shittu
met the ball with a firm header,
which seemed to have goal written
all over it until the keeper produced
a magnificent save to tip it over
the bar.
At this stage the game still looked
won but we began to sit back and
a change was needed to finish the
game off. That never came though
and Rangers fell apart in the last
five minutes.
A ball in from the right seemed
simple for Milanese but he was beaten
to it and Earnshaw pounced to make
it 2-2. The home fans couldn't believe
it and neither could we.
Paul Furlong went close to regaining
the lead after a lovely ball from
Ainsworth but again he was denied
by a cracking save.
As the final minute arrived Norwich
won a corner and the whole game
had an air of inevitability about
it.
Thirty
years ago to the day QPR had thrown
away a lead to lose 3-2 to Norwich,
a result that cost us the title.
Although nothing as dramatic hung
on this game the result was about
to be the same as Rangers left Earnshaw
unmarked and just six yards out
to win the game.
It was a complete injustice but
these things happen and despite
dominating for much of the game
we were going home with nothing
and those petitions against Nigel
Worthington were quickly being ripped
up.
Despite the result it was a promising
performance from Rangers. The back
four all played well for 74 minuets
before losing the plot. Stefan Bailey
was again impressive in midfield
whilst Cook was a joy to watch at
times.
Still that's another defeat and
It looks like we'll finish 4th bottom
now and from the position Waddock
took over and the players he's had
to choose from that's not good enough.
One
of the arguments against Ian Holloway
was always that the football wasn't
pretty enough and that fans would
rather see an entertaining defeat
than a boring win, I'm not sure
how many would still agree with
that after this game.
It looks like we'll see a major
clear out now with sixteen players
expected to be either released or
sold during the summer.
Next weekends last home game of the season against Watford will probably be the last time we'll see the likes of Bircham, Bignot, Nygaard and Lomas in a QPR shirt.
Gary Waddock has a massive job on this summer to turn it all around but for the first time in a while there were signs at Norwich that we perhaps are moving in the right direction.
