Oh Dear! I think
that's the best way to start this particular
match report after another shoddy home performance.
This weeks visitors were Leicester City,
without a manager and on the back of six
away defeats in a row plus they were still
reeling from letting Dion Dublin and Mark
De Vries leave before the transfer window
closed. With thirteen points separating
the two teams at the start of the evening
it was doubtful that Rangers would get a
better chance of three points all season.
Ian Holloway made just one change, which
came a bit of a surprise. Shabazz Baidoo
was dropped to the bench in favour of Marc
Nygaard. I say it was a bit of a surprise
as defensively we had looked hopeless against
Luton and I expected a change among the
back four but loan signings Taylor and Kus
were among the subs rather the starting
eleven. Richard Langley also started despite
suffering with a foot injury.
The game started with the visitors looking
well up for the game and keen to get themselves
out of the bottom three. They passed their
way through our midfield and defence with
relative ease whilst Shittu and Santos looked
a disaster from the first minute. The back
four seemed to want to get rid of the ball
as quickly as possible leaving the midfield
having to watch the ball go over their heads.
We did grab an early lead though with our
first attack of the game and it was once
again Ainsworth who got on the score sheet.
A lovely ball out wide by Langley got the
move going and Cook had the time and space
to pick out an inch perfect cross for Ainsworth
to rise unmarked and head past Douglas in
the Leicester goal. Cue Pig Bag and this
should have been a good start to a comfortable
night.
Unfortunately Leicester hadn't read the
script and it was a case on bring on the
clowns as the Rangers defence did all they
could to get into Soccer AM's taxi segment
on Saturday. Shittu and Santos left the
ball to each other and made a right mess
of clearly it to allow Matt Fryatt the chance
to volley past Royce at the second attempt
for 1-1.
Lomas came back to have a few words with
the central defenders but it didn't make
much difference as the pair of them spent
the rest of the game arguing with each other
and getting in each others way.
The game quickly turned into a bore with
neither side looking like they had much
of a clue. Rangers had the better chances
but were so poor I was looking around to
see if Sky had turned up to show the game
live. Paul Furlong had our best chances
seeing one effort cleared off the line and
Douglas saved another effort.
It was all few and far between though and
Rangers only real threats came through Langley
and Ainsworth. Langley was our only player
to win the ball in midfield and pass it
to a teammate.
I lost count of the times he'd get the ball beat a man look up see no movement so try and keep the ball longer to pick out a pass and just have to end up going back to Santos who for all his faults at least didn't hide and always wanted the ball. Shame he'd then put it in the crowd every time but at least he gave Langers an option.
Langley was
also being played into trouble by Matthew
Rose on more than few occasions and he did
well to retain possession with three men
on him rather than just fall over under
the slightest challenge as Cook was doing.
Out wide Ainsworth was also having a go
and working hard, his end product wasn't
great but it was good to see someone showing
a bit of effort.
Elsewhere the rest of the team was dire.
Furlong was doing all he could to get sent
off and was lucky to escape least a yellow
for several late challenges and one incident
where he left the full back spark out with
an elbow.
As half time approached Leicester began
to get on top and Royce made two good saves
to ensure we went into the break level pegging.
During the break the stewards did their
best to make the night even worse as we
spent several minutes arguing with a steward
as to why we were not allowed to leave the
lower loft bar via two doors with a large
exit sign over them. I'd always assumed
doors with an exit sign meant that this
was the exit but obviously that's not the
case at Loftus Road.
After that argument we had to sit through
another half of rubbish and the game managed
to get even worse. Very little happened
as the pattern of comedy defending and Furlong
giving away free kicks followed.
Santos was
getting stick for two sliced clearances
one under no pressure which he looked up
and put into the paddock and the other where
I think the ball had seen enough and flew
over the Ellersile Road stand and made it's
break for freedom.
After an hour or so Shabazz Baidoo came
on for Marc Nygaard whose only real contribution
was to be brought down for a blatant penalty
but the referee waved it away.
Baidoo came
on and looked lively but Leicester were
aware of his threat and had three men on
him almost every time he got the ball which
really nullified any danger he was going
to create.
Gareth Ainsworth was still having a go and
saw his effort disallowed for offside as
he shot from close range. To be fair he
was miles offside along with two others
and we didn't deserve the lead anyway.
We kept huffing and puffing but had long
run out of ideas when Leicester took the
lead with a rare attack. Matthew Rose was
at fault as once again his weak clearance
was picked up and two passed later they
had cut through our defence with Stearman
having the freedom of the penalty area to
knock it past Royce.
The stadium erupted into boos and most fans
walked out in disgust of a pitiful performance.
It was almost three soon after when Fryatt
was denied by Royce but against the odds
we then drew level.
Ainsworth again beta his man and was knocked
down the 72nd time in the game. Lee Cook
stood over the free kick and curled lovely
ball to the far post where Shittu was unmarked
and headed home from a tight angle.
Hope at last and we looked like pushing
on to get a winner.
Ainsworth then
signalled to the bench he wanted to come
off with an arm injury but by the time Donnelly
was stripped and the board was up he'd changed
his mind screaming no and making wild hand
signals as if to say he was fine.I'd rather
he just went on than make a big deal and
see young Scott Donnelly run on to a chorus
of boos. Stefan Moore also came on for some
fresh legs to replace Furlong.
The changes had the opposite effect that
was intended though as it was Leicester
who grabbed a late winner. One again it
was pantomime defending as they cut trough
us and although Fryatt looked well offside
he was bale to square it for the unmarked
Hughes to have the freedom of the penalty
box and make it 3-2.
That was it and despite a late Cook corner
the game was lost and the team were roundly
booed off following yet another pitiful
performance.
It's hard to know where to start really
when looking at that performance.
I didn't really have a problem with the
side Holloway picked. Nygaard and Furlong
can work and did work against Leicester
earlier in the season and bringing on a
fresh Baidoo for the last half an hour was
the right thing to do.
What he did cock up on though was not taking
off Santos who was having an absolute shocker.
Rose looked like he was frightened his left
leg would fall off if he used it. The change
to bring Taylor on and move Rose inside
was so obvious it was bloody embarrassing.
The buck obviously stops with the manager
and blaming injuries is getting boring now
as we had more than enough fit players to
win that game last night. The players didn't
exactly do him or us any favours last night
though and I doubt they are told to go out
and play like that.
I thought only Langley and Ainsworth looked
remotely interested and poor Langers was
still getting most of the stick for trying
to keep possession rather than knock it
long to no one. On one hand people moan
that we knock it long and then the same
people slate Langley and Cook for trying
to keep the ball.
There was just so much wrong last night
and it wasn't even a one off. Defending
should start from the front but the front
two rarely closed anyone down and when they
did it was more of a token effort until
Baidoo came on. The midfield just sat off
them and the back four were just comical.
We're in such a state at the moment. Holloway
has the rest of the season to sort this
out otherwise he'll have to go and he'll
only have himself to blame if he can't sort
this out.
This season was always going to come eventually
when we'd hit a wall, the crowd would turn
and we'd start going backwards. It was inevitable
after a few years of doing well, it happened
to Cardiff last year and looking up a division
it's happened to Birmingham and Middlesbrough
this year.
The trick now
is making sure we stay mid table and don't
get sucked into a relegation battle which,
considering who our next three away games
are against, is not as easy as it should
have been.
We all want to see better football but when
we do play long ball stuff I'd at least
expect us to be competing for every ball
and fighting our hearts out but at the moment
that's not happening. The season ticket
prices have made a huge impact on the atmosphere
around the ground but I doubt anyone would
care about prices if the team were sitting
mid table and playing decent football.
Leeds United are next and wholesale changes
are expected. If I was in charge I'd drop
Santos, Rose and Furlong and bring in the
new boys Taylor, Clarke and Lowe. Anything
other than a 200% improvement in performance
on Saturday will see Leeds absolutely stuff
us again. At least Brian Deane won't be
playing this year.
