It's been a troubled week
at QPR. The clubs finances have come under
intense scrutiny, Martin Rowlands has been
ruled out for at least six weeks and after
plenty of debate over the style of play offered
by Holloway the Rangers manager has reacted
angrily to fans on message boards so not the
best preparation for an away game at Leicester
City.
With Milanese out injured Holloway was forced to shuffle his pack again. Matthew Hislop made his debut at left back whilst Marc Nygaard also made his full debut in place of Dean Sturridge. Richard Langley started on the right wing in place of Gareth Ainsworth who was on the bench.
Rangers started pretty well with Cook looking a real threat on the left wing whilst Furlong and Nygaard were linking well and closing down defenders to keep pressure on the home side.
After around ten minutes Rangers took the lead. Richard Langley was fouled on the right wing and waited for Lee Cook to come across and take the free kick.
Cook curled in a lovely set piece and Marc Nygaard rose unmarked to head into the bottom corner. It was an excellent goal and a deserved one for Nygaard who had been a real threat to the Leicester defence.
Rangers looked in control and were playing some decent football. Lee Cook was on form on the left whilst Langley was playing on the other wing. He did allow his temper to boil over after being fouled but thankfully he didn't let that affect his game and gave a mature performance.
After twenty minutes the game kicked off with a red card. Furlong had the ball on the left wing and Alan Maybury jumped in with an awful high tackle, which could have badly injured Furlong. A 16-man brawl erupted with the referee just standing with no control at all.
Goalkeeper Rab Douglas ran 40 yards to get involved as did Danny Shittu but when it all calmed down the man on the floor Paul Furlong was the one booked. Maybury was rightly sent off but the bizarre Furlong booking would later costs us.
To make matters stranger the referee initially gave a drop ball before it was pointed out to him he'd just sent Maybury off for a foul so gave the free kick. Not a great day at the office for the man in the middle.
The sending off actually livened the home side up and they began to pose a few problems. A mistake between Royce and Santos almost allowed Gudjonsson to score but Rangers managed to clear.
In truth Leicester looked a poor side and it looked like the only way they'd score would be through a mistake. Shittu and Bignot were both having very solid games at the back whilst Matthew Hislop was very impressive at left back.
I was finding it odd that Gino Padula's name was being chanted but it soon dawned on me that he was sitting about 8 rows in front of us and gave the QPR fans a wave. Nice to see him and I wonder if he regrets turning down that one-year deal at QPR to sit in Nottingham Forests reserve side.
Rangers had a few chances to extend our lead before half time. A good run and cross by Cook found Langley at the far post but the ball wouldn't sit for him and his volley was comfortably saved.
Nygaard went close to a second goal and a nice ball from Langley put the big Dane through, his first touch was good and his second was a powerful shot, which went over the bar.
Just before half time Langley showed real quality to thread a quality pass between two defenders and set Bignot away, his cross found Furlong but the out of form striker could only head wide of the post as we got ready to celebrate.
At half time we deserved to be in front and were seeing some impressive performances. This wasn't the Brazilian style football that many fans are screaming for but it was a good away performance. The only way we were going to lose this game was if we sat back and tried to hold and as that's exactly how we started the second half.
We seemed unable to play against ten men and rarely made our extra man count. The midfield just weren't keeping the ball and the strikers were hardly in the game. Leicester had a couple of half chances and Mark De Vries wasted the best of them shooting wide.
Shittu was heading most of the balls into the box away whilst Hislop was continuing to impress at left back and looking like he'd keep Milanese out of the side. Langley almost created a killer second goal after he again beat his full back and crossed for Furlong but Rab Douglas just cut out the cross with Furlong trying to get on the end of it.
The referee continued with his bizarre performance as he booked Royce for time wasting despite the fact he was waiting for Leicester to make their substitution. He was doing a grand job of upsetting both sets of fans.
The game then took a nasty turn with Hislop's afternoon prematurely ended. He went in for a 50/50 tackle with Sylla and both players went down in a heap. Santos immediately called for a substitution and Hislop was down for a good five minutes as he was put in a splint and given oxygen. The morons Leicester fans to our right took great delight in singing "Your going home in a Leicester ambulance" which was pretty harsh but managed to upset us more later in the half.
Dominic Shimmin replaced the impressive left back and almost immediately the home side drew level. It was slack defending by Rangers as we asleep. A high ball over the top saw Rangers stand and watch as Elvis Hammond brought the ball down and fired past Royce from about ten yards out.
It was now the home side who looked more like winning the game and Hammond missed a half chance soon after as Rangers looked rattled.
Gareth Ainsworth was brought into the action to replace Langley who had been suffering with cramp. Ainsworth was straight into the action by throwing himself at a Cook corner but he was booked for a handball. The delivery was excellent though and Cook was really shining in this game.
A small section of idiots in the Leicester end decided to embarrass themselves by chanting your just a town full of bombers at us. Once again like at Hull what upset me more was the reaction of the other Leicester fans rather than the morons who think that sort of thing is funny.
The 2,000 odd who celebrated the song waving at us including grown men and women who should know better and were setting a crap example for their kids. Those tossers had been looking for a fight all game though so I expect they'll go home pleased with themselves. Disappointing that the press haven't slated Leicester fans as hard as they did the Hull fans last month.
The police reacted well to take a fair few out of the ground and ended up keeping us behind after the game.
Thankfully those morons eventually went home with nothing as Rangers grabbed a late winner.
A Long ball by Lomas was flicked on by Furlong. Nygaard chested the ball down and laid it off to Furlong who shot down at the ground and it bounced over Douglas into the back of the net.
Scenes of jubilation on the pitch and in the QPR end as we looked on course for our first away win since March and finally Paul Furlong had got off the mark for the season.
Rangers had a go at handing Leicester a point right from the kick off, a sliced clearance by Cook put us under pressure and Shittu was inches away from an own goal as he headed out for a corner.
Five minutes injury time was added as the home side pushed for an equaliser. There was still time for one more red card.
A free kick in their half saw Furlong get into a shoving match with Gudjonsson, it was all handbags but the Leicester player then stood his ground as Furlong ran back and collapsed made sure Furlong ran into him. Furs really should have known better but his second yellow saw him sent off, hopefully the ref will look at that, as his first yellow was a complete joke.
Rangers managed to hang on though for a well-earned three points. Not a great game to be honest but three points were very welcome all the same. We were the better side and played some decent stuff in the first half.
I thought Cook was excellent as was Nygaard who really impressed me and took his goal well. Langley played some lovely passes during the game but looked knackered when he went off. Real shame about Hislop who looked pretty good at left back before he got injured. Lomas and Bircham had decent games but neither really got their foot on the ball and calmed us down in the second half when we really just needed to keep the ball for ten minutes and kill the game off.
We made hard work on the win in the second half, Leicester were rubbish but we seemed determined to let them back in it. We did deserve the win but I doubt any of Holloway's critics will be changing their mind after that performance.
We're ten games into the season
now and 8th in the league despite not really
playing at our best for a few weeks. If we
can build on yesterdays result on Tuesday
we could be in for a decent season on the
pitch. Still plenty to improve on but that
was a result we badly needed.
