With Tom Doherty missing
through suspension it was a chance for Steve
Lomas to make his full debut for QPR after his
move across London last month. Lomas was one
of two changes for Saturday's game against Leeds.
Dean Sturridge continued his return from injury
in place of Stefan Moore who dropped to the
bench.
The game kicked off with both sides looking more worried about making a mistake than forcing one out of the other side. Mauro Milanese seemed to have picked up on what Ian Holloway was telling him and was linking well with Lee Cook and went on several overlaps to support his team mate. Little came of it as Cooks final ball lacked quality whilst on the right Ainsworth showed plenty of heart but picked up an early knock and never really looked the same after that.
Paul Furlong missed a good early chance. A free kick from Cook was met by Sturridge who guided a clever header into Furlongs path but the out of form striker fluffed a chance he would have buried this time last year. If ever a man needed a goal it is Furlong but it was encouraging to see him produce a decent all round performance.
Leeds didn't offer much going forward. One of the many new players added in the summer Jonathon Douglas had a wild shot which caused the upper loft more problems than Royce whilst Northern Ireland hero David Healy had a go from 20 yards but was high and wide.
With Shittu having one of his days where he seems to spend most of his time limping the physio was called on to have a look at him and Milanese who also got a knock. Milanese was forced off with a hamstring injury in a moment, which turned the game.
In hindsight Ian Holloway should have brought on Martin Rowlands to play at right back with Bignot going to the left but instead Ian Evatt came on with Santos going to left back. I doubt many envisaged how bad Santos would play for the next hour.
It took just a few minutes before Douglas made a fool of Santos out wide and he was very quickly swapped with Bignot. Leeds though had found a weak link and went after Santos on the other wing but despite getting in behind him on a few occasions the final ball was poor and neither side looked like scoring.
After a dull half an hour Rangers were starting to get on top with Sturridge looking a threat. A neat turn gave Butler no choice but to take him out and win us a free kick, which we duly wasted. A few minutes on and Sturridge got some space in the box and smashed a volley straight at the keeper. He's not 100% fit yet but this was an encouraging half from Sturridge.
With the half come to an end Rangers went into self-destruct mode and handed the three points to Leeds. Evatt tried to be a little too clever and lobbed the ball over Healy hoping to run around him and get a standing ovation for great skill. Instead Healy just blocked him and wont he throw in putting us under pressure, the quick throw had us in trouble and Santos produced his first foul for a minute to gift them a free kick.
As the referee was walking the wall back ten yards Leeds took the free kick and went in front. The goal was so simple it was scary. A lofted cross, Rob Hulse just took two steps away from Ian Evatt who stood and watched as Hulse tapped in from five yards.
Dire marking from Evatt and by the sounds of it he got a rather large bollocking from his manager after the game. The whistle for half time was a welcome one after a dire half of football. Neither side were impressive and only a huge cock up in the QPR defence had gifted Leeds an advantage.
The visitors looked to press that home after the break when from a corner Einarsson was unmarked and Bircham cleared his header off the line.
The game then went back to being dire again with Rangers huffing and puffing but not creating much whilst Leeds goalkeeper Neil Sullivan was wasting time with 40 minutes left, gawd knows why as we didn't look like scoring.
Ian Holloway threw a last roll of the dice with half an hour left. Martin Rowlands and Stefan Moore replaced Ainsworth and Sturridge. It would have be nice to see Langley come on but the injury to Milanese and lack of match fitness of Sturridge meant we had our hand forced. Soon after an injury to Santos saw the pack shuffled again as he was moved up front and Rowlands to right back.
We were restricted to long-range efforts still as Cook fired over the bar and Rowlands had a shot blocked. Leeds were then down to ten men with a moment of madness or an act of cheating depending on who you believe.
Bircham seemed to raise an elbow at Healy at a throw in but just about missed him, Healy reacted by dragging his studs down Bircham's leg right in front of the ref leaving him no choice but to send him off. Bircham did overreact which won't win him any new fans and spent the rest of the game being kicked up in the air by angry Leeds players.
Against ten men we didn't ever make the advantage count with very little width offered by the wingers and sod all movement by the front two.
We still had chances to gain a draw, which we probably deserved. Lomas fired a shot over the bar but the best chance came to Santos. Rowlands whipped in a lovely cross and the big defender dived in and headed over the bar from 10 yards out. He should have at least hit the target.
Rangers were denied a blatant penalty in the last few minutes. A clever turn from Furlong took him into the box before he was hacked down to the ground. The linesmen flagged for a penalty but a free kick was given right outside the box. It was a hopeless decision and made even more frustrating by the clowns failure to get the wall back ten yards. To compound our misery with no Langley on the pitch we had no one capable of taking it and the wall blocked Furlongs shot.
In the final minutes we had one last chance as Shittu smashed a shot in from 35 yards out which was on target but parried by Sullivan with not one QPR player gambling on the rebound.
The final whistle was greeted with a few boos fro the ref and a few for the team after a poor showing by Rangers. This was a dire game neither side deserved to win it and Rangers only have themselves to blame for failing to get one or three points.
Dire defending by Evatt for the goal, who to his credit had a much better second half, and a lack of movement and imagination in attack were our downfall. Many will and have pointed the finger at Ian Holloway who in hindsight made a mistake in not bringing on Rowlands for Milanese but I doubt he'd have expected Santos to completely fall apart after a simple change.
I thought we missed Gallen who will at least drop off and look for the ball to get attacks going which is something we badly lacked in this game with our attack looking disjointed at best.
So onto two away games now where
we'll need to pick up some points and improve
our performances. Hopefully Langley will start
next week with Rowlands alongside Lomas in midfield.
We need to keep possession better than we have
in the last few games and I think that midfield
would help us to do that.
