With
a good win at Stoke behind us Rangers travelled
to Ipswich with renewed confidence. Ian Holloway
had the luxury of being able to pick an unchanged
team although there was a slight tactical switch
with Langley moving to the left and Rowlands back
in central midfield. Georges Santos returned from
injury and was on the bench in place of Donnelly.
Rangers started the game brightly and looked a confident
side spraying the ball around well and also looked
a tight defensive unit when Ipswich came forward.
Rangers had the first chance of the game and the
weekly controversy soon kicked off.
Richard Langley curled a lovely free kick over the wall and for a second we celebrated thinking it had gone in. Unfortunately it had hit the side netting and off we went to start again. Well that's what we thought but the Ipswich fans and players wer4e angry about something as the keeper lay on the floor.
From
my view it looked like Furlong tried to run across
to get on any rebound and jumped over the keeper
but caught him accidentally. Of course I would say
that being a QPR fan but the reaction from the Ipswich
players and fans seemed to suggest something more
sinister. Furlong was booked and then booed throughout
by the home fans
This seemed to liven the home side up and they were
soon trying to get in behind us with the plan seeming
to be to win as many corners and free kicks around
the box as possible.
It
wasn't hard to work out why as the delivery from
set pieces of Currie was superb all game and it
took some excellent goalkeeping from Royce and good
defending by Rangers to keep Ipswich out. The home
side clearly miss Darren Bent up front and although
they looked a threat from set pieces they didn't
really have anyone to take advantage of the inviting
deliveries from Currie.
Rangers were doing well though and looked a threat
going forward. Stefan Moore looked bright alongside
Furlong whilst Rowlands was everywhere and looked
determined to make the central midfield position
his own.
We
should have taken the lead after a decent spell
through Dan Shittu. Langley played a nice ball into
the box after a corner was half cleared, his ball
found Shittu but he tried to get too much power
on the header rather than guiding it in and ended
up missing the goal by a few yards.
We were in front a few minutes later with a lovely
goal. Langley got the ball out wide and played a
lovely little ball into Stefan Moore who turned
and ran at the Ipswich defence.
This
frightened the life out if them and he found Ainsworth
with a neat pass. Moore then did what he hasn't
done enough of this season when he continued his
run to give Ainsworth someone to aim for, he was
found with a quality cross and Moore headed past
the keeper to send the away end into jubilant celebrations.
It was an excellent goal and perhaps proved a few
people wrong to have written off the youngster so
quickly.
A new song was started in the away end as around
2,000 QPR fans sang "Moore, Moore, Moore, How do
you like it, how do you like it" for about five
minutes as the home fans sat in a bored silence
only broken to half heartedly boo Paul Furlong.
Rangers frustratingly seemed to get penned in after
the goal after looking in control until then. Ipswich
were looking dangerous from corners so it was equally
frustrating to give so many corners away.
Royce did well to deny Forster from one of the corners but each one seemed to cause a bit more of a problem as Furlong did well to head one away from under the bar and Royce had to be on top form to palm one away.
The
equaliser came from a corner and it wasn't a big
surprise when it came. Currie again delivered and
it was Jason De Vos who rose above Langley to head
past Royce. This was a small QPR side and Ipswich
were taking advantage of this at set pieces. Looking
at the bench it seemed only a matter of time before
Santos or Evatt were brought on to help combat Ipswich's
only real threat.
Rangers were still a threat going forward though
with Rowlands and Langley buzzing around the midfield
and it was another decent move that led to Rangers
taking the lead. Langley again had a hand in the
goal finding Ainsworth with a nice pass and the
Rangers winger got down the line and put a cross
over to the far post where Furlong was on hand to
touch home for his fourth goal of the season and
make sure Rangers went in at half time in the lead.
The talk at the break was that we only really needed
to find one more goal then the game would be all
over. Ipswich looked a side short of confidence
and were there for the taking.
We started the second half well and were close to
getting that killer goal on several occasions. The
impressive Marcus Bean stormed through the Ipswich
defence but was denied by a last ditch tackle.
Langley
was next to go close as he stepped up for a free
kick 30 yards out and his effort was on target but
well saved by Price. Furlong then had a go shooting
after good work from Ainsworth but Price again denied
Furlong to keep his side in the game.
Furlong was looking more like his old self and he
kept the lead in tact with some excellent defending
from a dangerous corner scrambling away from Juan
who looked set to equalise. Rowlands was also showing
his defensive worth mopping up as Ipswich broke
through and we began to look comfortable with the
three points in the bag.
Stefan Moore had a chance to wrap the game up and
did well with a pacy run and shot which beat the
keeper but was just wide of the near post.
Ian Holloway then made two changes, which were understandable
but in my opinion went on to cost us two points.
Lloyds Dyer was replaced by Ian Evatt, which was
sensible to combat the threat from corners. Santos
also came on with the same intention replacing Langley.
The problem was a central midfield of Santos and
Bean made us far too defensive and we began to sit
back. The midfield was now offering little support
to the front two as they forward began to come deeper
and deeper to get the ball. Joe Royle sussed this
and brought on Magilton who would have 15 minutes
to get the ball from deep and make things happen.
Martin Rowlands was next to go off with cramp as
Lee Cook replaced him and we now looked happy to
hang on for the 2-1. This was a dangerous game to
play and with Ipswich looking decent from corners
it would only take one mistake to cock up a good
afternoons work.
The fresh legs of Cook almost got us a third goal
as he sprinted towards goal but instead of going
for goal he tried to put Moore in who was trying
to take a defender away with his run and wasn't
expecting a pass so we quickly lost possession.
With the team now basically sat on the edge of the
box inviting Ipswich onto them it was going to be
a long four minutes of injury time. In the first
of those four minutes Ipswich got themselves level.
Magilton
got his foot on the ball and was given far too much
time and space to pick a pass out. He lofted a ball
into the box for youngster Haynes to get away from
Milanese and head past Royce. Considering we had
11 men behind the ball at the time it was criminal
that an Ipswich player still managed to be unmarked
and score a cruel equaliser.
We now had three minutes to get a deserved winner
but it never looked like coming as Ipswich almost
nicked a winner themselves with a late burst from
Haynes, which Evatt did well to divert away from
goal.
So in the end it was just a point for |Rangers in
a game we should have won. Taking off Langley for
Santos was really a poor mistake which I think cost
us the game and invited Ipswich onto us and they
eventually got an equaliser.
Still at least we played some decent football at
times and I thought Bean was vastly improved on
how he looked before he went to Swansea. His partnership
in the middle with Rowlands was quite promising.
Rowlands was back to his best form in central midfield
whilst out wide Langley and Ainsworth were both
effective in their roles. At the back Shittu was
excellent as were the rest of the back four whilst
up from Stefan Moore looked a different players
after his goal and hopefully there is more to come
from him.
Rangers have a bit of a break now before the next
game which is Coventry at home so hopefully a few
of the walking wounded like Rose, Gallen and Nygaard
may be available to offer some competition to the
first eleven.
