After
Wednesdays pathetic performance against Stoke vice captain
Dan Shittu came out and told the world that it was all the
players fault and not to blame Gary Waddock. We'll put it
right was the basic message so Gary Waddock stood by his
players and made just one enforced change to the starting
line up to give them another chance. How he must be regretting
that this morning.
Paul Furlong replaced Sammy Youssouf and Rangers kicked
off with a long hoof into the South Africa Road stand as
we attacked the Loft in a game we should have been looking
to win comfortably.
Instead though the same problems we had at Stoke were all
too obvious. With Bircham/Lomas in midfield we had no one
really supporting the strikers, which was a big problem
when you play with two big men who hold the ball up and
look for support.
All of
Rangers good work was coming from Cook who was once again
exciting to watch on the left wing beating players and putting
some decent crosses over.
Our first chance came when Lomas volleyed over the bar when
well placed. Whilst, Furlong headed straight at the keeper
from a Cook cross. We were in control of the game but once
again not really creating enough chances and when we did
create a chance we usually fluffed them.
Crewe looked dangerous going forward as the impressive Steve
Jones had the beating of Bignot whilst Kenny Lunt again
looked impressive in central midfield.
Gareth Ainsworth fired a free kick over the bar but it was
the visitors looking more like scoring as Taylor and Lunt
both missed good chances with Paul Jones again on top form
to keep them out. Crewe were fighting for their lives though
and managed to grab the lead with a well-worked goal.
Rodgers
collected a throw in on the right and a neat flick opened
up the Rangers defence as Lunt burst forward from midfield
and slotted past Jones. A midfield player making a run into
the box is a rare sight at Loftus Road and we could do a
lot worse than try and sign Lunt up in the summer if Dari
Gradi's men do go down.
A few boos were heard around the ground but we still looked
capable of getting back in the game, as the goal seemed
to wake us up. Furlong and Shittu both had chances before
half time but in truth we deserved to be a goal behind and
the expected bollocking the team should have got at half
time would hopefully sort a few people out.
Whatever was said at half time appeared to work although
we should have been further behind in the first minute of
the half. Steve Jones was denied after getting clear in
the box with Evatt and Shittu looking at each other but
Jones did well to make a crucial save.
After this Rangers dominated and had a ten-minute spell
where we really should have got back in the game. Milanese
and Cook were at the heart of everything as the Italian
left back stormed into the box and saw his shot well saved.
Ainsworth was next to go close sprinting past the Crewe
defence but his on target shot was pushed away by the keeper.
Milanese also created an open goal for Furlong but the big
striker fluffed the chance and then Ainsworth managed to
put the loose ball wide.
The chances kept coming as Crewe looked like they were going
to collapse. Furlong did well to turn away from his man
but his shot was easily saved whilst Nygaard was having
a mare up front and saw his closer range effort well saved.
With half an hour to go the change finally happened as Richard
Langley replaced Marcus Bignot. The change caused confusion
though with Langley playing right back for a minute of two
with the team not really knowing who was playing where.
Lomas when went to right back before we went to a 3-5-2
formation with Langley behind the front two.
Furlong and Nygaard combined well to create a chance for
the 37 year old but his shot was easily saved as the crowd
began to get frustrated. Things soon got worse when the
visitors made it 2-0 with a rare counter attack. David Vaughan
got the goal form another throw in and the defending was
again woeful by Rangers.
Stefan Moore was then brought on and was unfairly booed
by the Q Block, Ok the youngster has been crap recently
but doesn't deserve to be booed and really Waddock had to
try something different up front.
Moore almost got himself a goal when he headed wide but
the performance was now a joke and it was hard not to laugh
when Nygaard collapsed to the floor trying to chest it down
then Langley miss kicked from ten yards out.
By the time we did get a goal back over half the stadium
had already left the ground. Cook was again the provider
of the goal and Ainsworth volleyed in from close range.
The final whistle went soon after and a dejected looking
team walked off to a chorus of boos with only Ainsworth
and Shittu bothering to acknowledge the supporters they
had once again let down.
Once again it was crap and the worst side in the division
comfortably beat us. Yes we had a good ten minute spell
in the second half when we could and should have scored
a few goals but overall that wasn't good enough and the
number of empty seats at the final whistle spoke volumes.
I'm not going to slate Waddock, once again his players did
him no favours and badly let him down. They need to have
a long hard look at themselves as a change in manager and
so called change of style has done nothing to spark a reaction
out of them. I thought once again he should have started
with Langley and brought him on far to late plus I don't
know what Baidoo has to do to get a game but the side he
picked should have been good enough to beat Crewe.
Bircham spent most of the game throwing himself on the floor
and pointing to his wrist moaning about time wasting when
we were hardly rushing to take our free kicks. Bignot, Shittu
and Evatt were all woeful and the front two were embarrassing.
To top it off we had the Q Block singing abut fighting stewards,
bombing Chelsea (I take it they'd laugh off any London bombing
chants now) and the booing of Moore after singing about
how loyal they are. I know Moore is crap but to boo him
before he's come on is out of order and Waddock had to bring
him and at least try and change the game as the front two
were not working.
On the positive side I thought Milanese had a good game
as did Cook and Jones. Hopefully we'll see a few of the
kids get a go in the next few games, even if we continue
to play crap they will at least gain a bit of experience
and learn from it which might benefit us next season.
