Apologies
for the lateness of this match report but
circumstances beyond my control have meant
that today (Thursday) has been the first
chance I’ve had to write a report this week,
The visit of Watford was a big game for
Rangers. After the 3-0 hammering we suffered
at the hands of Watford back in August the
players were out to prove we are much better
than that and the incentive of reaching
the 52-point safety mark was also within
our sights.
I was pretty hopeful of all three points.
It was my girlfriends Carly's birthday the
day after the game and a year ago when Rangers
played on her birthday we won 4-1 at Hartlepool
so I was hopeful of history repeating itself.
Ian Holloway made a bold attacking change
to his team for the visit of Watford. Gareth
Ainsworth replaced Richard Edghill, which
saw Santos back in defence, Rose at left
back and a welcome move into central midfield
for Martin Rowlands. The switch to a more
attacking style at home brought instant
results as Rangers almost went ahead inside
60 seconds.
The Watford fans got to their feet to boo
their former hero Lee Cook as he picked
the ball up inside the Watford half. Cook
ran at the visors and fired a shot just
wide of the near post. His effort didn’t
really trouble the Watford keeper but it
was a statement of intent from Rangers as
we poured forward with attack after attack.
Rowlands was looking the part in central
midfield whilst the combination of Cook
and Rose was causing all sorts of problems.
Rose was doing very well on the over lap
giving Cook a bit more space. The Rangers
winger showed plenty of quality when he
had the ball and one lovely piece of skill
saw him hold off two defenders before putting
in a inch perfect cross for Paul Furlong,
another former Watford player, to shoot
straight at Richard Lee.
On the other wing Gareth Ainsworth was up
against former QPR defender Jermaine Darlington.
Ainsworth was having the better of his battle
and got behind his full back several times.
One quality cross in saw Furlong fire over
when he should have done better and Ainsworth
and Gallen combined well again soon after
to supply Furlong but Lee did well to save
his header.
We’d
already seen more goalmouth incident in
15 minutes than we had in the entire game
against Reading.
It was all Rangers and Lee Cook was having
a field day on the left. He whipped in
another quality cross this time for Furlong
to head inches wide. We were getting closer
and it only seemed a matter of time before
we took the lead.
Watford had one half chance from a corner
as Bruce Dyer headed towards goal but
Bignot did well to clear the danger under
his own crossbar.
Rangers continued to push forward and
were gifted a great chance to take the
lead on 24 minutes. A clever free kick
by Rowlands saw him pass to Ainsworth
on the edge of the box, he flicked the
ball to Furlong and Lee blocked the big
strikers chance only for it to fall to
Gallen who smashed a hot towards the back
of the net. It was a certain goal but
Brynjar Gunnarsson punched the ball away
to give Rangers a penalty and the defender
was shown the red card by Graham Poll.
Kevin Gallen stepped up to take it as
the crowd held it’s breath. Gallen placed
his effort towards the bottom corner but
Richard Lee did brilliantly to get down
and parry the shot, Gallen was first to
the rebound but his header hit the bar
and Rowlands then fired high over the
bar as the crowds frustration began to
show. Gallen was getting a bit of stick
for his miss but to be fair to him it
was a very good save.
That miss seemed to affect Rangers and
we went quiet for a few minutes before
being brought back to life by Danny Shittu.
Shittu picked up the ball and the halfway
line and ran towards goal before shooting
from 35 yards out but his effort went
just wide. That seemed to wake Rangers
up and we were soon right on top again.
Martin Rowlands was doing an excellent
job in midfield, coming back to get the
ball off the defence and starting up attacks
from deep.We
were keeping possession and looking for
an opening and finally got one thanks
to Lee Cook. Cook did well on the left
to whip in a cross and Paul Furlong fired
a shot past Lee for his 17th goal of the
season.
Rangers were so comfortable now it was
embarrassing. We were passing the ball
around with great confidence with Rowlands
at the heart of everything. We were putting
together sustained passing moves keeping
possession which was good to se although
we weren't really going anywhere with
the possession.
Rowlands changed that though launching
a quality 60-yard cross-field pass to
Ainsworth who took a great first tough
to knock it past Darlington. Ainsworth
stormed into the box and played a lovely
cross to Gallen who made no mistake shooting
past Lee from close range. It was a brilliant
goal, so simple in it’s creation and thoroughly
deserved.
So 2-0 up at half time and it was now
just a case of how many would we get.
Rangers carried on where left off at the
start of the second half. Cook was a constant
menace and he was soon setting up a third
goal. A good run down the left saw him
cross for Gallen but his ball into the
box was half cleared back to the winger.
Cook had another go this time finding
Kevin Gallen who headed home from close
range to secure the three points.
The Rangers fans were loving it and Soccer
AM British Wrestling style the fans were
lifting their hands over the heads to
clap whilst shouting out “Easy”. It was
very funny and it really was easy.
After that it could and should have been
more. Cook again was the provider whipping
in a brilliant cross for Furlong but the
36 year old fluffed the chance shooting
wide with his left foot when it seemed
easier to score.
Gallen seemed desperate for his hat trick
and almost got a chance for it when Cook
again caused problems and Jay Demerit
clearly handballed in the box. Ref Graham
Poll was unsighted though and his linesmen
offered no help at all so nothing was
given.
With half an eye on the upcoming Derby
game Adam Miller replaced Paul Furlong
as we switched to a 4-5-1 to try and kill
the game off. Furlong was given a standing
ovation with a chant of “36 He’s having
a laugh” going down well with the brilliant
Paul Furlong. Matthew Rose also went off
to a standing ovation to give Richard
Edghill a chance.
The change didn’t help though and allowed
Watford back into the game. John Jackson
almost made it, 3-1 with a brilliant shot,
which Simon Royce superbly tipped over
the bar. Rangers were stating to look
edgy and Neil Ardley soon made it 3-1
with a wonderful finish. He chested the
ball down and hit a looping volley over
Royce which brought generous applause
from the home fans and an ironic chant
of “Easy” from the Watford fans.
Rangers quickly changed things again with
Tony Thorpe replacing lee Cook as we went
back to 4-4-2 and despite a few nervous
moments we finished the game off thoroughly
deserving the 3-1 win.
It was a superb performance by Rangers,
possibly our best at home all season.
The back four all looked good especially
Matthew Rose who was brilliant getting
forward helping out Lee Cook. Martin Rowlands
was a star in central midfield whilst
the front two were again excellent. The
star men though were out wide.
Ainsworth had his best game for quite
a while whilst Lee Cook was simply outstanding
tearing his old team apart and for once
he was able to do it for the whole game
rather than just one half.
So the magic 52 point safety mark has
been reached with 10 games to go. Very
few fans expected us to still be in with
a chance of the playoffs at this stage
of the season but if we can continue to
play like this then anything is possible.
