Rangers last home game
before Christmas saw Ipswich Town visit Loftus Road in front
of a sell out crowd for a top of the table clash. Ian Holloway
was forced into once change from the side which lost last
weekend at Nottingham Forest. Lee Cook missed out with a foot
injury so Marc Bircham returned to partner Bean in midfield
and Adam Miller made his home debut on the left wing and Kevin
Gallen started up front for the first time since the draw
with Millwall a month ago.
Ipswich started the game on fire showing why they are seen
as genuine promotion contenders this season. Rangers were
on the back foot from the start and could have been behind
after five minutes. Ian Westlake broke from deep after a neat
build up and he got into space in the Rangers box. Westlake
hit a strong shot from inside the box but Day reacted very
well to turn his shot around the post.
Ipswich were camped in the Rangers half as some of Rangers
defending looked very desperate at times with Shittu and Santos
running into each other on more than one occasion but the
two big defenders exchanged a few words and which seemed to
sort things out for a while.
It was Chris Day keeping Rangers in the game though. A mistake
by Georges Santos saw the former Ipswich man head straight
o Tommy Miller who hit a good shot which Day was equal to
and he made a brilliant save. Day ran out from his goal to
give his defence a bollocking and the Rangers keeper was well
up for this game.
Day was on a one-man mission to keep us in a game which was
very one sided at this stage. A good cross from Westlake found
Bent whose header looked to be going in but Day tipped it
away to safety. Rangers just couldn’t get out of our own half
and Ipswich were looking a class above us.
A cross from Westlake looked to be going over but Day needed
to be alert and tip it over the bar as the pressure increased.
It was a relief to finally see some action up the other end
when we won a free kick on the left. Adam Miller shipped in
an excellent cross and Shittu was millimetres away from opening
the scoring as the ball flashed past his head.
It was soon back at the Loft end though as Ipswich continued
to push for the opening goal. Darren Bent was again denied
by the excellent Chris Day. From the corner Ipswich finally
took a deserve lead.
Rangers again fell for
the same trick as we put two men in front of the corner
taker worried about a short one when they had no intention
of playing it short. Again we had a man less in the middle
and Ipswich finally took advantage. Magilton put the ball
in and Rangers looked all over the place as the ball bobbled
around with Day looked uneasy for the first time all game
and Devos headed into the net despite Marc Bircham’s attempt
to clear off the line.
It was no more than Ipswich deserved and it was looking
like a long afternoon for Rangers. But within a few minutes
we were level thanks to Paul Furlong.
Rangers broke down the
left through the impressive Adam Miller who played a ball
into Furlong. Furlong took matters into his own hands by
running at the Ipswich back four and as the crowd and Furlongs
team mates waited for a pass out wide, Furlong let fly with
a brilliant shot giving the keeper no chance and Rangers
were level. The QPR fans were going mad and despite being
second best in the first 25 minutes, Rangers had fought
back to get level.
Things soon got even better. A long ball forward found Gallen
who brought the ball down well and laid it off to Furlong
who hit his shot as sweetly as he possibly could. Davies
got a hand to it but the shot was so strong he had no chance,
as Rangers were 2-1 up.
The score line was ridiculous as on the balance of play
Ipswich should have been 3 or 4 goals ahead but once again
the team spirit and never say die attitude of the Rangers
players had got us in front against one of the promotion
favourites.
Things could have perhaps should have got even better. Ipswich
were stunned and Rangers pushed for a third goal. Good play
by Gallen helped create a chance for Marcus Bean but his
shot flew well wide. Gallen was linking well with Adam Miller
on the left and he was starting to look more like his old
self up front.
Miller almost gave us a 3-1 lead cutting in on the left
to his preferred right foot but his shot was easily saved
at the near post. Miller was looking impressive and the
youngster seemed embarrassed by the Q Blocks chant of One
Adam Miller and Miller for England.
Rangers then had two chances to kill the game off before
the break, which proved to be a big turning point. Miller
again was the provider whipping in an excellent cross and
Gallen found himself unmarked from eight yards out. He hit
the shot well on the turn but it flew just past the post.
A few inches the other way and the game would have been
over.
Gallen then had a golden chance to see us in at half time
with a 3-1 lead. Miller was involved again and Gallen got
into the box and away from his defender but his shot went
well over when he perhaps should have hit the target. It
wasn’t an easy chance but a player with Gallen’s ability
should have done better.
Ipswich then pushed for an equaliser before half time but
Rangers kept them out and walked off to a standing ovation
from the QPR fans.
Rangers were slightly fortunate to be 2-1 up as Ipswich
had been the better side but Furlongs goals had been of
the highest quality and with a bit of luck we could have
been even further ahead at the break.
Ipswich started the second half determined to get back on
level terms. Bent was put clear of the Rangers defence and
the impressive youngster looked set to put his side level
but he fired wide of Chris Days goal.
Rangers were fighting for everything and Gareth Ainsworth
epitomised Rangers spirit with some excellent tackles on
the right wing. Ipswich were beginning to peg us back again
as we struggled to get the ball off the impressive visitors.
After all the away sides quality they eventually equalised
with a very scrappy goal. Kuqi headed down for Bent who
had far too much space in our area. Bent miss hit his shot
and seemed to slip as hit it but the ball deflected in off
a defender and beat Chris Day. It was a cruel blow to Rangers
but to be fair the visitors deserved to be level.
Rangers pushed forward to try and regain the lead. A strong
run from Ainsworth almost gave us the lead. He burst into
the box going past the challenges of three defenders before
he was eventually stopped but the ball fell to Gallen who
shot first time and Davies made a very good save to deny
the Rangers captain.
Ipswich continued to push forward though and the passing
and movement of the Ipswich team was very impressive. It
was end-to-end stuff now as Ian Holloway looked to make
a change with Martin Rowlands and Jamie Cureton warming
up. Before we could change anything though Ipswich ran away
with the game.
First up Darren Currie gave the visitors the lead for the
second time. Currie was on as a sub making his Ipswich debut
and he had already scored once against Rangers earlier in
the season for Brighton. Currie got the ball on the edge
of the box and fired in a superb shot, which Day seemed
to have covered but it took a slight deflection off Marcus
Bignot and beat Day flying into the top corner.
Ipswich continued to push for another goal and Rangers struggled
to get the ball back. You could see the belief fading from
the Rangers side and Holloway made two changes.
Martin Rowlands and
Jamie Cureton replaced Gareth Ainsworth and Marcus Bean
with Gallen moving back into midfield. It was a sensible
move by Holloway but before the fresh legs had a chance
to change the game Ipswich killed us off.
A cross on the right found Kuqi in the penalty area and
once again hesitant defending allowed him to get a shot
in past Chris Day to give his side a 4-2 lead. Rangers could
have defended this better but it was a good finish from
a player with a good goal scoring record in this division.
Rangers looked shell-shocked and Ipswich pushed forward
for a fifth. Holloway switched things again with Santos
going up front as we played a 3-4-3 but any hopes of us
getting back in the game were gone.
Rowlands made one decent run on the right whilst in injury
time a nice pass by Cureton gave Rowlands a chance but we
were unable to get a third goal.
The final whistle saw those of us left in the stadium clap
the team off. They had given it their best again but Ipswich
were just too good for us on the day and they became the
first team to win at Loftus Road since Sheffield United
in August.
Rangers have plenty to improve on though and Ipswich have
taught us a few harsh lessons. At the back we were hopeless
to any movement shown by the front two and I think we need
to add a player of two to the back four. Bircham and Bean
were dire and outclassed by Ipswich and I felt we sat back
too much after half time when they were there for the taking
at the back if we pushed on for a third goal.
I also felt that for the first time this season when the
team really needed the fans to give them a lift at 2-2 we
didn't really respond which was a shame but I think most
people in the stands could see Ipswich blowing us away and
that seemed to suck the life out of us. I for one was feeling
really deflated in that second half.
I think most people at the start of the season expected
days like yesterday. Ipswich are a very good side and simply
better than us. Credit to Rangers for making a real game
of it at times but class told in the end and if they keep
playing like this I think Ipswich will go up this season.
I guess this may see
us slip down the table a bit with two tough away games coming
up. I've been to all the games
so far this season and I think we look a side capable of
making a push for the playoffs but 10-12th is probably where
we will end up which is better than I expected in August.
If we do slip down to 11th next week hopefully fans won't
get too disheartened as with the squad we have it's been
a bloody miracle to stay in the top six for nearly three
months.
Man of the Match: Chris Day
Players Ratings
1. Chris Day:
Day kept us in the game during the
first half with a series of outstanding saves. Day was looking
back to his best and was very unlucky to have four goals
scored past him. 8/10
2. Marcus Bignot:
Had a reasonable game but not as good as he can be although
he continued to push forward in the second half putting
in a few decent crosses. 6/10
3. Gino Padula:
Got in some crunching tackles and a few timely interventions
but he is still a little short of his best form. 7/10
5. Dan Shittu:
Dan is still learning at this level and struggled to cope
at times against a very strong attack. Could have done with
a bit more protection from midfield but did his best against
a very good side 7/10
23. Georges Santos:
Tried too hard to impress at times against his old side
and didn't do what's made him a success at QPR this season.
He should have been more alert for the fourth goal when
Kuqi had far too much time and space to score. 6/10
8. Marc Bircham:
An afternoon he'd like to forget. Worked hard but after
he picked up a knock in the first half he was never the
same and probably should have gone off earlier. 5/10
16. Marcus Bean:
Like Bircham he worked hard and gave it his all but he was
outclassed by the Ipswich midfield and he'll have learnt
some harsh lessons after this game. 5/10
11. Gareth Ainsworth:
Worked hard as ever showing some great spirit but apart
from one cracking run which made a chance for Gallen the
Ipswich defence coped with him pretty easily. 6/10
21. Adam Miller:
Another impressive performance from Miller. He was played
out of position but worked hard and created a few good openings
for Rangers and he looks like a real bargain. Quite possibly
the long-term answer to our central midfield problem. 7/10
10.
Kevin Gallen: A very good
first half where he made things happen. Set up the second
goal and was doing a very good job linking the play to get
Miller the ball in dangerous areas. After he missed two
chances though his head seemed to drop a bit and like many
others he was disappointing in the second half. 7/10
29. Paul Furlong:
Another two sensational goals from Furlong who should be
given the freedom of Shepherds Bush. He was Rangers one
ray of hope during the game, if only he was a few years
younger. 8/10
Subs
14. Martin Rowlands:
Good to see him back and he showed glimpses of what he can
do. 6/10
15. Jamie Cureton:
Didn't touch the ball until injury time and seems to want
to wait for something to happen rather than making it happen.
6/10
18. Kevin McLeod:
One good run and cross but wasn't on long enough to do much
more. 6/10
