After losing eight away
games in a row confidence on the road with QPR wasn't high
going into the trip to Coventry who were looking to impress
new manager Mickey Adams. Someone throwing themselves under
a train at Birmingham got the day off to a bad start as trains
were delayed and it was a manic charge to the train when it
was announced one of them would be going to Coventry in five
minutes.
After a few drinks in
the Rocket pub by the train station we made our way by taxi
to Highfield Road for the last time. We got a taxi with a
Coventry fan who told us the new stadium was even further
out of town and had no train station near it so that's not
going to be easy to get to should we face them next season.
Once we got to the ground
memories of previous visits came flooding back. Andy Impey
putting us top of the league, 10 man Rangers winning 1-0 thanks
to a Trevor Sinclair goal and that Eion Jess goal which virtually
ended our Premiership days. The ground hasn't changed much
and as ever the QPR fans were in good voice as the teams came
onto the pitch.
Rangers were unchanged
after Dan Shittu recovered from a virus. Marcus Bignot was
back fit and on the bench along with Martin Rowlands, Matthew
Rose, Chris Day and Tony Thorpe giving Ian Holloway plenty
of options. When you consider we had Bircham, Bean, Miller
and McLeod watching the game in the stands it just shows that
we do have some strength in depth when everyone is fit.
The game started quite
brightly with Rangers looking to get a good start to the game.
Coventry had the first real chance though and it took some
good defending by Dan Shittu to deny Gary McSheffrey. Rangers
soon got on top though and began to look more like the side
who had won seven in a row earlier in the season.
The two wide men were
causing problems whilst Cureton was looking very lively alongside
Furlong. Ainsworth went close to grabbing his third goal of
the season after Furlong set him up but he shot wide of the
post. Shittu was next to go close heading a corner just over
the bar as we pushed for the opening goal.
Rangers finally took
the lead after 13 minutes. A throw in just in front of the
QPR fans from Richard Edghill got the ball rolling. He found
Furlong who held the ball up and laid it off for Cureton who
fired home with a quality finish to give us the lead. Coventry
must hate the sight of Cureton, he's now scored four league
goals this season and all of them have been against Coventry.
Stern John was a threat
for the home side and Simon Royce made a decent save to keep
him out but most of the play was at the other end as Rangers
looked for a second goal. Ainsworth was having a good afternoon
against old man Steve Staunton and after beating him easily
for pace Luke Steele made a good save to keep us out.
Cureton had two more chances
to extend our lead. The first saw him control the ball well
and shoot just wide with the keeper beaten. His second chance
really should have been a goal. Ainsworth again was the creator
as he crossed for Cureton who had time and space in the box
but placed his shot straight at Steele's legs when he had
time to take a touch and bury it.
Coventry had very little
to offer as an attacking threat and it looks as if Mickey
Adams has a battle on is hands to keep them up this season.
Rangers went in at half time comfortably a goal up and it
should have been more.
Coventry came out a different
side for the second half though with Adebola on and they were
more of a threat. Rangers were on the the back foot and conceded
a number of corners which the home side looked to capitalise
on.
Georges Santos headed
the first clear but after a sustained spell of pressure Adie
Williams headed a corner past Royce and into the bottom corner.
It was poor defending by Rangers and a man on the line would
have cleared the danger. We now had plenty of work to do and
the home fans sensed victory as they sung their one song with
lots of enthusiasm.
The home side pushed forward
but the back four coped well with Davies and Shittu heading
everything clear and Rangers began to get control again. We
had a great chance to take the lead after a good run and pass
by Santos set Cureton through. Cureton was one on one with
the keeper but he lost control with a poor first touch and
the keeper saved at his feet.
Ainsworth was very unlucky
not to get the second goal after storming through the middle
he fired in a cracking shot which was very well saved by Steele
who tipped it over the bar. Kevin Gallen was having a decent
game in midfield and a good run and shot across the goal had
us up and ready to celebrate but it flew past the post.
Coventry almost won it
with another set piece. This time Morrell got a free header
but it was straight at Royce.
Holloway made two changes
with around ten minutes left. Ainsworth and Cureton went off
to be replaced by Rowlands and Tony Thorpe. This move helped
Rangers stay in control of the game and we looked the team
most likely to get the winner. Tony Thorpe went close to his
first goal since last February as he was put through but the
linesmen's flag spared his blushes as he put his chance wide
when it seemed easier to score.
With four minutes of injury
time it looked as if we'd have to settle for a point. Marcus
Bignot was brought on for Gino Padula to try and keep things
tight at the back but we had one last chance to win the game
when lee Cook was brought down to win Rangers a free kick
on the half way line.
Shittu met Edghill's lofted
ball in and his header found Santos in the six-yard box to
volley towards goal. Luke Steele
couldn't hold on to it under pressure from Furlong and the
referee who gave nothing in the famous Roy Carroll incident
a few weeks ago signalled that it was a goal and gave QPR
all three points.
We celebrated in the away
end then stopped as it all got a bit confusing before celebrating
again as it was confirmed the goal stood. Seeing it on TV
today the ref got it spot on, as the ball was at least a yard
over the line.
The home fans weren't
happy though and one idiot tried to get on the pitch to have
a go at the ref, he'll feel like an even bigger prat when
sees it was the correct decision. Still what do you expect
from a group of supporters whose only song was written by
Jimmy Hill.
Marcus Bignot was booked
for time wasting before the ref finally blew for full time
and our woeful away run was over. This was much more like
it from Rangers with plenty of spirit and some good football
which all bodes well for the future.
The back four all played
well whilst Ainsworth and Gallen had good games in midfield.
Cureton and Furlong were a constant threat and Georges Santos
was excellent in his new central midfield role.
The win moves Rangers
back into the playoff race and now we've got that all important
away win hopefully we'll be able to push on and have a good
end to the season.
