Watford survived a spirited late fightback to secure victory over Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road.

Both sides hit the woodwork before the deadlock was broken, Richard Johnson grazing the bar with a half-volley for Watford before Paul Furlong's lob beat Alec Chamberlain but bounced back off the bar.

Watford went ahead on the half hour when Johnson fed Neal Ardley, who let fly from 20 yards with a shot that flew into the far corner. Bruce Dyer doubled Watford's advantage six minutes into the second half when he latched on to a Heidur Helguson flick and ran clear before coolly slotting home.

Richard Langley sent a free-kick just wide and Paul Furlong saw a header nodded off the line by Lloyd Doyley as Rangers pushed for a way back. Richard Langley did pull a goal back from the penalty spot when he beat young Hornets keeper Richard Lee after Ardley brought down Marc Bircham.

But the visitors, who lost Ardley with a head injury late on, held on in a tense finish to secure victory.
