At the start of the season
the visit of Sheffield Wednesday looked on paper to be one of our
toughest and biggest games of the season. Some even predicted that
the two games between ourselves and Sheffield Wednesday would be
title deciders. Just goes to show how wrong some people (including
me) were as Rangers went into this game top of the league whilst
Sheffield lay in 17th place without a win in seven games. Probably
a good time to be playing them then.
Ian Holloway made three changes to the team which drew last week
at Swindon. Danny Shittu was back in place of Edghill whilst the
suspended Marc Bircham was replaced by Steve Palmer and Gareth Ainsworth
made a welcome return in place of Eric Sabin. Upon hearing the team
news I'm sure I wasn't alone in having a little moan to myself about
Steve Palmer playing but I can understand why Holloway went with
him and despite the criticism he receives he very rarely lets us
down.
The bench was an impressive one and it is great to have players
like McLeod, Furlong, Pacquette and Edghill waiting to come in and
it must put pressure on the starting eleven to really perform.
Loftus Road was close to capacity as the teams kicked off with Sheffield
Wednesday bringing a very impressive 3,000 supporters to the game.
Even more impressive when you consider their recent form.
They looked a determined team as
well working hard throughout the pitch and knocking balls over
the top for the lively front two but with Shittu back in the defence
we were looking even more solid than usual. They did have the
first chance though after about five minutes. Proudlock broke
into the box with a good deep run and his cross was deflected
with Reddy and Owusu waiting to pounce but Day managed to cut
out the cross before they got the chance to score.
Up the other end we were playing some good football and looked
a real threat to their goal. The Rangers midfield were once again
impressive chasing after every ball and giving the opposition
no time on the ball. Palmer was more than justifying his managers
faith in him whilst Marcus Bean seems to really enjoy getting
stuck in and he was having another good game.
Some of our passing was a joy to watch as Martin Rowlands was
once again involved in most of our best stuff. He started the
game on the left wing but he was never afraid to roam into the
middle and he played a nice one two with Gallen which opened up
the defence but his effort was blocked by a last gasp tackle from
Lee.
Gareth Ainsworth was looking like his old self again and was throwing
himself into tackles giving their full back no time at all on
the ball. His block tackles really were excellent and kept them
in their own half and as they struggled to get the ball away we
won a free kick for a late foul on Ainsworth. The Sheffield Wednesday
fans seemed pretty upset by this as Ainsworth had appeared to
commit the first foul but the ref gave it to us and turned out
to be one of the few decisions he got right.
Gino Padula ran over to take it and curled in a brilliant cross.
The Rangers forwards showed great movement and Sheffield had no
idea who to mark and left Steve Palmer free to head past pressman
and give us the lead. A very well worked goal and great to see
Palmer get on the score sheet after an impressive start to the
game from he captain.
From here on there was only going to be one winner as we controlled
the pace of the game and looked a side good enough to challenge
for promotion.
Chances began to flow for Rangers as we played most of our football
in the oppositions half and Thorpe combined well with Gallen for
Mr Magic Hat to hit a shot on the turn which went just wide. Some
of our football was a joy to watch as we passed fluently and the
movement off the ball was excellent. One move almost resulted
in the second goal as we worked the ball well before Gallen found
Gino out wide in space. Gino did well to put the cross in and
Thorpe rose in between the two big defenders but directed his
header just wide of the post. It was a cracking move by Rangers
and much more was to come from us.
Rowlands was all over the place cutting inside and passing the
ball around and looking for the return pass. He came close to
scoring on a few occasions as he ran from deep down the line before
cutting inside and hitting a low shot towards the near post which
was well saved by Pressman.
As the half drew to a close Sheffield Wednesday began to win some
free kicks around the box as the referee and linesman made some
bizarre decisions. One foul against Shittu was laughable as the
big defender gave Reddy a five yard head start then beat him for
pace and cleared for a throw in but as Reddy ran into Shittu a
free kick was given against the Rangers defender. Padula was then
penalised for something which no one understood. The ref gave
the free kick to us but the linesmen overruled him and both sets
of players looked confused.
The last chance of the half came to Rowlands after good work by
Gallen and the midfielder struck his effort just wide. But at
half time we were looking very comfortable and if we carried on
like this then I'm sure I wasn't the only person very confident
of victory.
The second half saw no changes by Rangers and we continued to
look the better side. We got into some good positions out wide
with Rowlands and Forbes putting in some crosses but the final
ball wasn't the best. Ainsworth then went on a good run after
a great pass from Gallen. He beat two men but was blocked as he
went to shoot but this was much more like it from the QPR winger.
We were camped inside their half and came close to a second with
a free kick from 30 yards out. The ref couldn't get the wall back
ten yards despite pleas from the players so he counted out the
ten yards as the crowd counted along with him which seemed to
amuse Clarke Carlisle. The ref made himself look a prat though
as it turned out the players were right and the wall was only
five yards back.
Gino Padula took it and curled his
effort inches wide of the post. Gino was looking back to his best
and his set pieces were a real threat especially his corners.
He was getting some great deliveries in the box but the ref seemed
intent on not giving us anything and blew almost every time we
won a header in the box.
Gallen was then booked for time wasting as he headed the ball
away. A silly booking but Gallen had been warned about the same
thing in the first half. With the crowd right behind the team
the atmosphere was excellent and Holloway decided to make a change
to perhaps finish the game off. Paul Furlong came on to a standing
ovation replacing Gareth Ainsworth with Gallen moving to the right
wing.
We continued to play most of the football and when Wednesday did
break they were usually caught offside by the well drilled defence.
A great move followed which was so close to giving us the three
points. Forbes did very well with a cheeky back heel to Rowlands
who played a one two with Thorpe and the midfielder seemed certain
to score as he ran through but his shot hit the post and was scrambled
away for a corner.
Palmer was next to go close with a good cross from Forbes looking
to find the captain but he was just beaten to it before he could
head home. Gallen and Thorpe then combined brilliantly again showing
great understanding. Gallen cut in from the right and ran towards
the defence and slotted it through to Thorpe who hit the side
netting when he should have scored.
Marcus Bean was giving away several free kicks and was replaced
by Kevin McLeod with Rowlands moving back into the middle.
Gallen then fired a shot straight at Pressman after a good run
as it looked like the second goal would never come as Rowlands
broke through again but was tackled as he went to finish the move
off. From the corner though we finally killed the game off as
Padula swung the corner in and Thorpe was unmarked to head past
Pressman and set off the celebrations among the QPR fans. 2-0
was no more than we deserved and it was great to see Thorpe score
again.
Gino then suffered a slight knock so was taken off as a precaution
before Rangers added a third goal and it was a goal of pure quality.
a quick break from Rangers as Thorpe picked up a clearance from
a corner and two passes later it was 3-0. Thorpe found Gallen
with a brilliant pass and Kev ran forward towards goal before
unselfishly squaring to Kevin McLeod who had the simple task to
finishing the move off and Rangers had won another home game.
Just before the final whistle Sheffield Wednesday managed their
first shot on target all game but it wasn't good enough to beat
Chris Day and the team received a standing ovation at the final
whistle.
This was another excellent display by a QPR team who seem to be
getting better and better all of the time and we stay top of the
league.
As for Sheffield Wednesday, well they looked pretty poor on this
showing but I think they are in a similar position to us when
we first got relegated and Rangers are making the opposition teams
look poor at the moment with some excellent performances.
Man of the Match: Kevin Gallen
Players Ratings:
1. Chris Day: Didn't really have anything to do all game. 7/10
2. Terrell Forbes: Another good performance from Terrell. Defensively
he was excellent and he got in some good positions going forward.
7/10
3. Gino Padula: His delivery from free kicks was superb and he
looked back to his best with a very good performance. 8/10
5. Clarke Carlisle: Won everything in the air and was very impressive
again. 7/10
6. Danny Shittu: Strong in the air as you'd expect and although
not back to his best yet he had a very good game. 7/10
11. Gareth Ainsworth: Back to his best with some brilliant tackles
as he puts everything into helping us win the game. It's rare
to see a winger get stuck in as much as Ainsworth does and he
links very well with the front two. 8/10
17. Marcus Bean: Worked hard in midfield closing players down
and passing the ball well. Bean is improving with every game and
it's great to see a home grown player getting his chance. 8/10
4. Steve Palmer: Palmer put in a
performance that showed how badly he wants to get back in the
team. He worked hard, won tackles and did the simple things very
well. 8/10
14. Martin Rowlands: Another excellent performance as he was all
over the pitch creating things and was close to scoring on a number
of occasions. 8/10
9. Tony Thorpe: Another goal for the in form striker and he could
have scored a hat trick. It's great to watch him play at the moment,
his movement is excellent as is his link play with Gallen. 8/10
10. Kevin Gallen: Just shaded the
man of the match from Rowlands. Gallen was at the heart of all
our best moves creating chances for others and going close to
scoring himself. 9/10
Subs
29. Paul Furlong: Looked a long way short of full fitness but
it's good to se him get 20 minutes under his belt. 7/10
22. Kevin McLeod: The goal should
give him confidence and he put in some excellent crosses when
he came on. 7/10
23. Richard Edghill: Came on to
play a left back, a position he'll probably fill in next week
when Gino is suspended 7/10
