April 24th
has looked like being the key game for QPR and Plymouth for quite
some time. When it arrived the scenario was simple. A win for
Plymouth and they were promoted as champions, a win for us and
it was game on for promotion and the championship.
So it was an early start for one of the longest away trips of
the season. We arrived at paddington at around 8am for the half
eight train and the beer was flowing early with the train packed
with QPR fans. One poor woman got on and asked if this was a good
carriage to have a quiet read and a sleep and she probably made
a wise choice in moving up to 1st class.
Four hors later we arrived at Plymouth and were told by the train
manger that we had to be met by the police at the station. Bit
of a blow as we were hoping to put the left over beer and food
into a locker and pick it up after the game for the journey home.
No such luck though as the Police just sent us out of the back
exit into a pub.
We got off the train to be met by police looking twitchy and ready
for a fight and it wasn’t the nicest welcome to an away game this
season.
We were taken to a pub where we mixed with Plymouth fans without
a hint of trouble but after a few drinks we were told to put the
drinks down and leave causing trouble when everyone was just having
a laugh together.
We were then walked to the ground because the police feared we'd
be ambushed by Plymouth fans but they didn't stop Plymouth fans
walking along with us, which was a joke. It then became chaos
as one (admittedly pissed) QPR fan walked along behind a car rather
than on the path he was told to. Hardly a hanging offense but
the police were on him as if he'd just shot the Queen.
He was pushed over a barrier into the park, had the handcuffs
put on him and was arrested. Total madness and this set plenty
of Rangers fans off to try and have a fight with the police and
what should have been a nice walk in the park turned nasty due
to the moron police being desperate to nick some cockneys.
You could see it in their eyes they had that mad dog look and
we thought I best to just keep walking and keep quiet. Plymouth
fans then tried to attack us from the side as the police stood
and watched and we were taken through a kid’s playground which
was one of the more stupid decisions made by the police. Those
poor kids must have wondered what the hell was going on.
Anyway despite the ground being a two minute walk from here we
were taken the long way and 30 minutes later we arrived at the
ground. I was given a nice search as the bloke groped my testicles
for a few seconds, not sure what he was trying to find but if
it made him happy then good luck to him.
Once we got into the ground the fight to get a beer became ridiculous
as 3 bar staff tried to serve 2,000 QPR fans and as you can imagine
it was causing a few words to be exchanged between stewards and
fans. After that frustration we gave up and made our way to our
seats right at the front of the stand. The view was pretty poor
to be honest but always is when you are at the front but I was
planning to get on television if we scored so that was a bonus.
The ground was jumping with both sets of fans on their feet singing
their hearts out ready for the big game. The teams were announced
and it was no shock that Rangers had made a few changes.
Marcus Bignot was missing through suspension and Steve Palmer
dropped to the bench as the defence faced another re think. Gino
Padula was in at left back and Clarke Carlisle partnered Matthew
Rose in the middle.
Richard Johnson was back in the team with
Bean missing out as Holloway went with experience and Martin Rowlands
passed a fitness test and started the game on the left wing.
Rangers kicked off attacking to the far end of the ground and
all the nerves and excitement building up to the game were now
focused on cheering the boys onto victory.
Plymouth started the brighter of the two sides as they pushed
forward to try and win some set pieces where they have been lethal
all season. An early sliding tackle by Gino Padula won them a
first corner and a superb delivery was crying out to be converted
but Rangers breathed a sigh of relief as no one attacked the ball.
Micky Evans was putting himself about and winning the earl y battle
with Clarke Carlisle but it soon became easier for Clarke as he
got to grips with his man and won most of the headers around the
box.
Rangers offered very little as an attacking force as Plymouth
went in search of that vital first goal. The best early chance
came to Evans after good work down the left saw his rise unmarked
in the box and his header was flying into the top corner but Camp
produced a magnificent save to tip it away for a corner.
We were looking very shaky at this stage and Marino Keith’s overhead
kick went just wide as the QPR fans began to sweat a little more
in the boiling hot sunshine. Carly began to get sun stroke as
the idea to wear jeans for this game backfired on us both and
Rangers weren’t making it any more comfortable for us as Frilo
shot just over from another corner.
Rangers finally got into the game at around the 20 minute mark
as we weathered the early storm. We still created very little
with a few set pieces getting us all excited but a Carlisle header
from a Padula corner was all we had to show for our efforts.
We were making a game of it though as the game was a real battle
in midfield and Bircham was working his nuts off chasing all over
the pitch to try and get us possession when we lost the ball.
Our creative players were very quiet though with Rowlands hardly
getting a touch in the first half an hour.
Plymouth had another effort look destined for goal but miss by
a whisker. Lee Hodges beautiful volley had Camp beaten but it
was just the wrong side of the post and we were able to breathe
again.
Our best chances came after Gallen did well outside the box. A
pass back to Bircham saw the energetic midfielder flick the ball
up and hit a stunning volley but it went straight at the keeper.
A yard either side of the keeper and it would have gone in.
Gallen got behind the back four once as we got off our seats but
his low cross was cleared for a corner when it seemed a better
idea to go for goal.
As half time arrived though both the players and fans were grateful
of the break. The heat was getting unbearable and it was nice
to get a cold pint at half time despite having to spend most of
the break queuing for it.
The return of the two teams saw both fans rise again and the atmosphere
was superb as everyone in the stadium made a big effort to get
behind their team. Rangers started the second half much brighter
and seemed intent on getting the first goal.
Ainsworth and Rowlands were now getting more involved and a neat
move down the left won us an early corner. Bircham urged the fans
to get behind them and a half cleared corner fell to Rowlands
who had a bit of time to shoot but it went wide when he really
should have hit the target.
It was end to end stuff now with both sides going for a win. Keith
was put through and one on one against Camp the QPR keeper came
out and saved well. Hodges was next to go close with poor marking
by Rangers leaving him with a free header and Camp saved the day
again. It was getting incredibly tense now and any mistake could
win the game for someone. We almost got a big slice of luck as
Ainsworth got on the end of an Edghill pass and he raced past
his full back to get into the box. A low cross for Furlong was
cut out by Connolly and beat his own keeper only to come off the
post and go wide. We were in the air celebrating for a second
before it just went wide.
We were on top now and Bircham was hacked down on the edge of
the box before getting a boot to the head. He went off and came
on with a big white bandage round his head and his blue and white
hair sticking out at the top. From the free kick Rangers tried
the Barnsley trick of having Ainsworth and Rose stand in front
of the keeper and then run out. Rowlands fired the free kick in
and it took a big deflection and seemed to take an age as it rolled
towards goal and then inches wide.
The excitement was building as we sensed a goal and Gallen fired
wide with his only chance of the game. Bircham had played on with
the head injury but he was taken off with twenty minutes left
to get some stitches and Steve Palmer came on to a few groans
in the QPR end. The groans were more aimed at the timing of the
substitution as we defended a corner but Rangers cleared the danger.
The departure of Bircham saw us lose a bit of bite in midfield
and we soon began to be pushed back deeper and deeper and look
less likely to score. Camp kept us in it again with a great save
from Frillo as the Frenchman got away from the Rangers defence.
With time running out a draw seemed the likely outcome before
disaster struck and the noise levels were turned up a few notches.
Norris got the ball on the right and before Gino could get near
him he flicked it up and smashed in a truly brilliant cross for
Evans to attack and this time Camp was beaten and the home crowd
went crazy.
It was a quality goal and the quality of
the crosses from this Plymouth side was something to make us pretty
envious.
Heads began to drop but Holloway made two changes with McLeod
and Cureton on for Johnson and the disappointing Ainsworth.
We huffed and puffed but Plymouth looked comfortable and got a
killer second goal to win them the championship. Frilo again was
the danger mad as the defence got into a mix up and he sprinted
through to finally beat Camp in a one on one situation. Game Over
now and some QPR fans made for the exit.
As the goal went in a kid in front of me who was about 10 years
old and had sung his heart out all game broke down in tears I
tried to comfort him telling him we'll be OK and keep his head
up but the poor sod was devastated.
I felt so sorry for him and I was happy
to see him again after the game when he came over and shook my
hand to say thanks for helping him and after hearing Bristol had
drawn he was happy again and we both agreed that we'll still go
up. I really hope our dreams come true next weekend.
The rest of the game saw Plymouth keep the ball in the corner
and as the final whistle went memories of Cardiff came flooding
back as they jumped around celebrating and our lads collapsed
to the floor. This was truly devastating but the players did come
over the clap the superb away support and hopefully they’ll pick
themselves up for next weekend.
Chris Day seemed delighted to hear the final score of the Bristol
City game and that 0-0 draw was a massive result for us and keeps
it all in our hands.
I along with around 1,000 other QPR fans stayed afterwards to
clap Plymouth off, as they are worthy champions and the Plymouth
chairmen and players both seemed to appreciate our gesture of
sportsmanship. Good Luck to them next season.
A few people blamed Holloway but again I can't see what more he
could have done. He put his faith in some good players and they
didn't deliver for him when it mattered. At least we went down
with a fight this time rather than the rubbish at Bristol City
earlier in the month.
Plymouth looked a very organised team who were simply better than
us. It was strange situation though as although I felt a draw
would have been a good result it wouldn't really have changed
much as a mate said on the train home if we had drawn and been
all happy but we'd still only be
2 points clear and would need to win the next two games. A win
was the only result, which would have sorted us out, and honestly
we didn't deserve it.
After the game the police just disappeared and left us to walk
back ourselves and we walked back with several Plymouth fans having
a laugh and a joke and it was all good natured so god knows why
the police were so keen for trouble before the game.
It was amusing though to see a small fight
kick off in the park and I've never seen a policeman run away
down a hill so quickly. When a young bloke is pissed walking behind
a car they couldn't move quickly enough to nick him but a bloke
getting the shit kicked out of him saw Steve Palmer like pace
in getting over to sort the situation out and one copper going
for the 100 meter down the hill record.
The two sets of fans though were superb and chatted together before
and after the game and showed how football fans should behave.
I think Plymouth fans will be a credit to their club in division
one next season and they fully deserve to go up as Champions.
As for us, well the back four and keeper all had good games as
did Bircham but too many of our creative players didn't get on
the ball enough and they just didn't play to the standard needed
to win this type of game.
Still it's still all up for grabs. We need to win next Saturday
and if we do I think that might be it. We'll need to get right
behind them and make it a day to remember.

7.10
3. Gino Padula: Great to see him back and he was excellent defending
as if his life depended on it but I thought his set pieces were
poor. 7/10

his best performance of the season. 7/10

never really got hold of the midfield as he can do. 6/10
11. Gareth Ainsworth: Very quiet game, worked hard but was lucky
